Shut up, nerds

[–] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

…Kinda surprised by comments.

I know some are jokes, but I drink like… a few times a month? With longer stints of less, maybe daily on vacation. And that feels like a lot to me.

Everyone I’ve known who drinks every day is an alcoholic. Even beer enthusiasts I know don’t do that; they’ll do like an IPA can or two a day, but not more than 7 a week average.

[–] flamekhan@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago

Isn't it hilarious that we're focusing on this when there are literally thousands of other environmental and lifestyle choices we make everyday that probably have just as much (if not more) of an impact on our lives? Maybe the US should do a study on how their shitty Healthcare system has a much more profound impact on outcomes then a sip of bourbon every couple days. 🙄

[–] someonesmall@lemmy.ml 2 points 10 hours ago

If you drink alkohol everyday you're an alcoholic.

[–] TwodogsFighting 3 points 12 hours ago

Did they say how big the drink could be?

[–] garbagehead@lemmy.ca 6 points 15 hours ago

And the research from that big longitudinal study shows there is no safe amount. My doc was surprised when I quoted the study to him -- he'd read it too. If something else in society (not guns in the US) caused as many accidents/deaths a year it would be banned tomorrow.

They can't handle the tooth

[–] pHr34kY@lemmy.world 7 points 21 hours ago

I'm perfectly OK with drinking less than one drink per day for a 1 in 1000 chance. It's probably less than that, as I've never met an alcoholic who is honest about their consumption.

However, 2 drinks per day becoming a 1 in 25 risk is well beyond an exponential increase.

Shouldn't tell adults what to do

[–] HiddenLayer555@lemmy.ml 4 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago) (1 children)

Shouldn't conflate the publishing of a health study with "telling" anyone what to do as an adult.

[–] Bloomcole@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

That's literally the tiltle

[–] Jentu@lemmy.ml 0 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago)

The unit of "drink" is not very specific. That martini or Rusty Nail is just as harmful as a 2% cider I guess. How about those 5 liter beer boots?

[–] guillem@aussie.zone 19 points 1 day ago (2 children)

The only healthy amount of alcohol is zero.

[–] Kushan@lemmy.world 7 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago) (4 children)

From a purely physical perspective that is probably true, however it's worth factoring in the mental aspect as well. With the world going to shit in a big way, having a drink on a Sunday afternoon might help take the edge off for some folks.

Everything is about moderation, don't take this as me championing binge drinking or anything like that, just that things that are physically bad for you can absolutely be used in moderation for enjoyment and that's important too.

Weed or Xanax or both is far safer than alcohol and works pretty well for that purpose

[–] HiddenLayer555@lemmy.ml 3 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

I stopped drinking entirely as soon as I discovered cannabis edibles. Thanks Canada! Wouldn't personally "recommend" them or any other drug to anyone else but it seems to work okay for me.

[–] procapra@lemmy.ml 2 points 10 hours ago

Both are far less accessible. Although weed beverages are becoming more common.

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 3 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Drinking a depressant will not help you feel better tbh

[–] Kushan@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

It can, it really depends.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/4053968/

It can help reduce stress levels, helping you to relax and unwind. To be clear, it's not a long term solution, it's not a panacea and it has its own drawbacks, but people in this thread keep jumping to excessive drinking as a reason it's bad and completely ignore that plenty of people are capable of moderating their intake.

It doesn't have to be alcohol, this applies to damn near everything. We could be talking about burgers or marijuana, anyone ingesting either of those every day is heading for a bad time. But once now and again? It's not going to do any harm.

[–] GaumBeist@lemmy.ml 3 points 14 hours ago

Here's a 2000 study that is, in part, a response to your 1985 review:

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11053757/

Their conclusion:

It is as yet impossible to determine to what extent moderate alcohol consumption causes positive psychological outcomes and to what extent it is part of a complex pattern of mutually reinforcing variables.

In other words: you have committed the cardinal science sin of looking for sources that support your conclusion, instead of vice-versa. You shall now be punished with 100 hours of defending your position in this minor argument that you don't feel strongly about from random strangers online, including several hours that won't be used for several years until some weirdo with no social graces decides to respond to a thread that hasn't been active in about a decade.

Also might have potential for interrupting memory formation into PTSD after traumatic experiences, if taken before sleeping.

Then again, so does Tetris. And a lot of people who experience traumatic events can't exactly go out for a night of drinking with friends immediately afterward.

[–] hanrahan@slrpnk.net 2 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Everything is about moderation

that is not true at all.

just that things that are physically bad for you can absolutely be used in moderation for enjoyment and that's important too.

that's juat terrible advice, ask any drug addict, or alcoholic or watch the video by Yul Brynner

I'm not saying don't do it, I am suggeatibg encourgaing people to do stupid shit is a terrible thing to do.

https://www.cancer.org.au/cancer-information/causes-and-prevention/diet-and-exercise/limit-alcohol

There is convincing evidence that drinking any type of alcohol (beer, wine or spirits) increases the risk of cancers of the bowel, breast, mouth, throat, voice box, oesophagus (food pipe) and liver. The risk is even higher for some of these cancers in smokers who consume alcohol.

Even drinking small amounts of alcohol increases your cancer risk.

[–] Kushan@lemmy.world 4 points 16 hours ago

I'm literally saying that moderation is crucial. Drug addicts and alcoholics by their very definition are not doing things in moderation.

You can do "healthy" things to excess as well, you can exercise too much, you can literally breathe too much, so don't go using an extreme as an example as to why something is bad.

[–] guillem@aussie.zone 1 points 19 hours ago

I see your point. What I wrote before was just me feeling that the article was failing to make it clear enough.

[–] Darthcapi@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 day ago (3 children)

So I only drink on saturdays. No drinks for 6 days mean 6 drinks on Saturday, right?

Yeah...

That's incompatible with my lifestyle

We're all going to die. Having some fun on the way out is all I ask.

What about children? /s

[–] Commiejones@lemmygrad.ml 1 points 22 hours ago

7 drinks over a couple hours once a week?
