Just activate desktop mode. That works for me whenever i have to visit reddit.
News and Discussions about Reddit
Welcome to !reddit. This is a community for all news and discussions about Reddit.
The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:
Rules
Rule 1- No brigading.
**You may not encourage brigading any communities or subreddits in any way. **
YSKs are about self-improvement on how to do things.
Rule 2- No illegal or NSFW or gore content.
**No illegal or NSFW or gore content. **
Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.
Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.
Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.
That's it.
Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.
Posts and comments which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.
Rule 6- Regarding META posts.
Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-Reddit posts using the [META] tag on your post title.
Rule 7- You can't harass or disturb other members.
If you vocally harass or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.
Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.
Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.
Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.
Let everyone have their own content.
Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here. This includes using AI responses and summaries.
i use firefox browser on the phone it allows you to close it, i also have adblockers on.
it doesn't on my end. I had to make an account
They are pushing that pop-up to the users who visit the site most so if you delete cookies (not sure if logged in / out matters) you will not get that pop-up... until you do again.
I actually find Lemmy to be kind of refreshing. While it doesn't have nearly the depth of content or the traffic of new posts on things I'm interested in, the fact it doesn't send my adblocker into over drive or have mods that seem to spend a lot of time trying to police their communities like they are being paid for it is nice.
Gives me a small taste of what the old days of individual blogs with comment sections and forums was like.
It's a far more natural vibe, the Reddit dynamic was driving me crazy in a hundred subtle ways.
I left because I got banned twice. One for three days for telling a story about my trainer Mark (whos name I changed) and how I didnt like him. 3 day ban for inciting violence. A week later, I was commenting on a post about someone saying getting punched in the face turned out to be a good thing for him. I replied, "Yeah man, a punch to the mouth can be great for behavior correction." Banned for 7 days.
It is important to mention that I was banned the literal second I hit post. No human saw my posts. Both times, I was autobanned by the AI moderators. It just disgusted me, so I deleted my account. I had that account since 2011, too.
One problem I had with Reddit is that the world is falling apart, and every post about serious shit always has people thinking they are hilarious. American missile blows up a school, "Guess the US found oil under that school huehuehuehue" It got so annoying.
TLDR: AI Moderation is getting super strict to prepare for their IPO, all the posts felt like bots anyways.
Yah, you have to use code words now like how they used "Panda" as a code word for Pres Xi in China.
Change the URL to old.reddit.com, you'll never get that pop-up
Clicking on posts can switch back to the www version though. I'm honestly over it.
Theres a Firefox addon that redirects you to the old version when you click a link.
I left when they permabanned two accounts.
Fun Fact: Both accounts are now back. 🤣
They still have this paywall? I assumed they immediately stopped due to the incredible bounce rate from all the lurkers
Maybe an rss reader might block the ads. Issue is getting content like pictures and videos since reddit learned how to make sharing their content hostile to other platforms
I usually don't browse the web on my phone but for me it was when I got a reddit warning for wishing that someone would put something extra in Putin's tea.
I’m a former redditor as well, a few years back. Lemmy is a very nice place. It’s like Reddit back before Reddit went to shit (~15 years ago).
This year, we’ve had a big influx from Reddit. This is great that people are finally abandoning ship.
I’m pleading with you that are new here…please don’t bring the nastiness here. Start afresh!
I say that because I’ve noticed a sharp increase of shitty attitudes all of the sudden. It’s a direct correlation with the new influx of redditors. I had someone, just two days ago, accuse me of acting like an r/atheist whatever-the-fuck. He was trying to insult me because I disagreed with his view on something.
It doesn’t matter if we agree or disagree…respect and latitude is what makes Lemmy a great place. Let’s not turn this platform into Reddit 2.0 ❤️
just block tankies instances. and you are golden. also individuals who make tankie comments should also be blocked.
When i first came to lemmy i was defensive and grouchy. Took a bit to recognize how different it is here.
I got a comment deleted for saying Thailand should punish violent Israeli tourists
That's exactly what drove me over here a few days ago. After they locked the API up and boost stopped working I was just browsing the website occasionally. Lemmy is cool so far, just running into a worrying amount of pro-Russian propaganda mental gymnastics. And of course not as many speciality subs yet. I wanna chat about project cars but the largest car community here are those fuckcars loons. Not fun people to be around.
thier AI bots got worst in the last year, the purges made thier bots more apparent and numerious.
Just block a large chunk of .ml and .hexbear stuff and you'll see 95% less commies.
commies aren't even the issue it's the tankies. definitely a lot more leftist presence on lemmy than average (though that's true for the internet as well I feel) but most of them aren't just whiplashing straight over to bootlicking the anti-western dictators instead.
Commies are fine, the pro-military tankies are the issue.
Commie here, please don't confuse Tankies who are basically just nationalists for non-US aligned countries with me.
Like the other person said, your Lemmy experience will be a lot better once you block the tankie instances, but I hear you regarding the lack of niche communities. I want to talk about cars too, but unfortunately the "fuck cars" crowd far outnumbers us and they are everywhere on Lemmy. I can't help that I enjoy driving; chill out, people!
all you need to block is tankies, and politics. world. i just leave the memes sub alone.
The technical problem (reddit UX is shit/app is shit) has various solutions. Eg:
https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.quantumbadger.redreader/
The bigger problem of reddit being reddit is ... why Lemmy exists.
Let's each do our best not to turn Lemmy into Reddit.
Okee dokee
welcome here, over here is chill
Ymmv
You can use the old version by changing the URL to use old.reddit.com instead of www.reddit.com. It removes the banner.
Shhhh. That's like telling someone who just quit smoking, "Look, there's a barely-smoked cigarette in that ashtray!"
More like vaping, as it removes some of the harm (adslop and horrible UI), but keeps other parts that are still bad for you (current reddit itself)
Welcome.
Isn't it amazing how Reddit was this beautiful community, genuinely useful and welcoming to millions, and now it's being thrown away, soiled, emptied out, on the pathetic whims of some selfish billionaire owner?
I find that Reddit is being run by dictators who will ban anyone easily
It's just how capitalism do. Enjoy free VC services while they last, but do not get attached to them. They will, invariably, enshittify.
Private companies with good leadership can last for a bit but eventually slide as well. Companies do not have moral stances and only will hold moral policies as long as they have moral leadership or they fear user backlash. Money and profits are too great an incentive.
Reddit was big enough that it wasn't worried about user backlash. I'm enjoying Steam for now, but there will come a day that it will too become a pariah, mark my words.
This whole shitstorm started three years ago. Welcome!
took you long enough XD, IDK of anyone has already told you but there's a tool to migrate all your subreddits to similar communities, and a script to overwrite all your comments for privacy's sake.
There's also a great community finder tool you should check out, on this side any lemmy instance can sub to any community on any other lemmy instance so you may want to subscrive to several communities with the same theme in more than one instance.
This is one of them
https://lemmyverse.net/communities
This is another: https://sub.rehab/
Reddit has IP shadowbanned me for some reason. All new posts on my main account are invisible, and new accounts are the same. I’ve appealed, multiple times, to no response.
And not “some reason” being “I made edgy political posts they’d obviously dislike.” No, I did two things on Reddit:
-
Nerd out about lore on /r/thelastairbender and some other fandom subs
-
Nerd out about ML in /r/localllama, before the tech bros came for it.
Doesn’t seem like anything to ban me over.
…Funny thing is, it seems like I’m not alone?
I noticed many experts missing in /r/localllama. Honestly it feels like all the technical knowledge has been sucked out of the sub, and people there don’t even know the basics of how stuff works.
Same with my preferred fandoms. They’ve gotten more “culty,” less knowledgeable, less interested in deep lore and speculative theory/stories.
just look at the shadowban sub, they are in the same situation. also unbannings by reddit seem very rare, like the admin actually unbans you. its less than<1% appeal rate out of how many posts are made. the admins are the only ones that physically unbans people, while thier AI bans people. and how many admins are there working on reddit compared to how many appeals that go through. i suspect the admins have a way of filter out majority of appeals(hences ghost rejections)
