There's nothing more satisfying that being able to gradually break something up, with different graphical layers of damage, without having to think about opponents getting in the way, like annoying mosquitoes.

So, Lemmy, any recommendations besides the bonus levels on Street Fighter II and Final Fight? Edit: Preferably not FPS.

BroForce. There are enemies, but it's totally just blowing shit up with parodies of action movie heroes. Lots of cascading explosions, very satisfying.

[–] Seimhe@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

That looks like a really good rec. I'm sensitive to flashing lights and fast animations so it's not for me, but it's my vibe. Thanks.

[–] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago

Broforce is ana absurd and delightful train wreck :)

Red Faction: Guerrilla? Smash some stuff on Mars?

[–] Seimhe@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That does look good, thanks. I'll see if it'll run on my hardware.

[–] noxypaws@pawb.social 5 points 2 days ago

It's quite old at this point, should run well on most stuff!

It's the first game that came to mind for me, too. Destruction there is very satisfying!

Buuuut people keep shooting at you. When playing it, I got constantly annoyed with the TPS elements and just wanted to tear stuff up. After a bit I bounced for that reason.

Thanks for reminding me, I loved that game! Perfect recommendation, although the enemies do impede the satisfaction of getting on with it. Maybe there's a cheat to get rid of them.

[–] HumanOnEarth@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

There's a certain satisfaction to eating the enemies

[–] Seimhe@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

There is, actually.

[–] Tylerdurdon@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

There's an old game called Carmageddon where you could wreck people and other cars pretty well without interrupting.

  • Blast Corps 64 - You need to smash everything out of the way of an out-of-control nuclear armed truck using various tools ranging from bulldozers to a full on mech suit.

  • Just Cause 3 - You capture enemy territory by blowing up everything colored red.

  • Teardown - You're a demolition company and you're tasked with demolishing various things.

  • Donkey Kong Banaza - Not played it myself, but the game just appears to be Donkey Kong going ape shit and wrecking up everything he sees.

  • The Sims - Smash and destroy the dreams and aspirations of your virtual doll people

[–] Seimhe@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Thanks for the recs, I appreciate it! I haven't heard of JC3 and I haven't really seen The Sims so I'll check those out.

[–] yyyesss@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Blast Corps for N64. IIRC, the whole point of the game was to use different heavy equipment to destroy stuff.

[–] Seimhe@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Now we're talking, thanks!

[–] cloudless@piefed.social 4 points 2 days ago

Blast Corps is a great hidden gem. You should really try it.

[–] mercano@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Hardspace: Shipbreaker has you tearing old spaceships apart for salvage. A lot of it is sorting your space recyclables, but towards the end of story mode

SpoilerYou get to absolutely trash a wreck, recovering 0 salvage value, to show management what for.

I'm watching a review now, thanks. Looks like a good recommendation, although I'm not a huge fan of FPS. Edit: yeah, this is great.

[–] ChairmanMeow@programming.dev 2 points 2 days ago

You can open up sandbox maps if you want. Not all missions are timed either, some just let you smash shit.

[–] Sunsofold@lemmings.world 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The term you would want to search for is 'destructible environments.'

  • Worms games
  • Split Second
  • Destroy All Humans
  • Red Faction:Guerilla
  • Just Cause 2 (so much destruction)
  • Shipbreaker is a more relaxed demolition game
  • The Street fighter still is reminding me of Bloody Roar where you could kick enemies through walls to fight in another area
  • BeamNG.Drive
  • Wreckfest
  • Control
  • 7 Days to Die
  • Dysmantle
[–] Seimhe@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Thanks, I'm working through reviews on these :)

[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Can't believe I'm shilling for Nintendo for the second time in like a month but this seems to be a type of fantasy Donkey Kong: Bananza could fulfill? That whole game's selling point was fully destructible environments.

[–] Seimhe@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

That does look good, thanks!

[–] who@feddit.org 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Rampage (1986) comes to mind, but (minor) enemies are present and I don't think it applies damage in layers.

[–] Seimhe@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yes, already commented by iknewitwhenisawit, but it's a great example that I'd forgotten. I doesn't have the damage in layers, but it does have gradual and incremental damage which is great.

[–] who@feddit.org 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

already commented by iknewitwhenisawit

I don't see any such comment. I guess federation could be lagging.

[–] Seimhe@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Ah, I get you. I didn't think of that. Thanks for the suggestion.

Not super much destructible environment, but enough to satisfy most chaos gremlins, can be found in Goat Simulator.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Pretty much all of the Lego games are about destroying everything to get parts to build more things.

Not retro, but I torments of Destruction is made by one of the Red Faction devs. Also check out Abriss.

Both are machine building games with a focus on destruction. Instruments of Destruction does have a ton of prebuilt vehicles though if building isn’t your thing. The he campaign is also pretty easy to plow through to unlock the prebuilts.

Demolition Inc? Scratched that sort of itch for me a while back, still available on Steam

[–] Seimhe@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

That looks like fun, thanks :)

[–] Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Punch a tree in Minecraft?

[–] Seimhe@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Valid, just maybe not as detailed as I'd like due to the blockiness.

[–] Seimhe@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Love the humour after this one too

[–] yyyesss@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

dude, you even had the steel pipe and couldn't finish that off? 😉

[–] Seimhe@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I think I did, with time left on the clock!

It’s only a few years old, but Teardown is all about demolishing neighborhoods.

[–] neidu3@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago

I'm just gonna leave this here...

[–] EitherEther@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Red Faction 3 is third person and really let's you break buildings and structures.

[–] frustrated_phagocytosis@fedia.io 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

If you ignore the missions, Jungle/Urban/Desert Strike. Just annihilate the president's motorcade via helicopter, as you do.

[–] Seimhe@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Haven't heard Desert Strike in decades. Thanks, that's a good rec.
