Slavery is still legal in the US. Pot, kettle

[–] ragepaw@lemmy.ca 11 points 3 days ago

Slavery for me, not for thee.

Slavery has always been legal in the US and will always be legal until a constitutional amendment removes it. The only time slavery is not legal is when it is based on race.

[–] harmbugler@piefed.social 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Slavery is legal in prisons and prisons lean heavily towards black incarceration, so they found a way around it more or less.

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

That is specifically why Nixon began the "War on Drugs".

I wonder what % of the world's slave labor they have via their prison slaves. They already have a disproportionate amount of imprisoned people so its gotta be quite a lot of slaves.

US prison labor accounts for about 2.9% of forced labor (modern slavery) worldwide, but is also over a third of the forced prison labor population worldwide.

US Data (800,000 forced workers): ACLU & University of Chicago (2022). Captive Labor: Exploitation of Incarcerated Workers.

Global Data (27.6M total forced labor; 2.2M forced prison labor): International Labour Organization, Walk Free, & IOM (2022). Global Estimates of Modern Slavery.

800,000 / 27,600,000 = 2.9% of total global forced labor. 800,000 / 2,200,000 = 36.3% (over a third) of global forced prison labor.

Thats actually cool that the numbers for that are out there. Thank you!

6 months. 6 more months of this and an excrutiating summer before we learn whether or not there will be a coup in November.

So, so tired.

Didn't I read somewhere on Lemmy a while back that the US was reducing protections for child labourers?

Yeah fuck off Orangutan.

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 13 points 3 days ago

Some southern states just got rid of a whole lot of child protection in the name of the economy.

[–] ZephyrXero@lemmy.world 16 points 3 days ago

Remember, every accusation is a confession with them

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 9 points 3 days ago

The only forced labor allowed is to be domestic and bribed.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 days ago

Trump seeks to protect oompa lumpas.

[–] j_elgato@leminal.space 2 points 3 days ago

Congress actually told him No to something...

So of course he is going to smash the big red tarriff button, the only feature on his plastic Fisher Price Resolute desk playset.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Says the country that sells prison labour for cheap.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 days ago

And exploits border crossers to pick crops.

[–] Folstar@lemmus.org 5 points 3 days ago

Oh good, so they'll be taking on domestic forced labour next, right? Right?!

Geez fellas, I'm starting to suspect these GQPedos actually have no values whatsoever and are just saying whatever feels convenient to get what they want.

[–] AmazingSUPERG@thelemmy.club 5 points 3 days ago

So… the war is over?? He has time now to deal with other issues?

[–] rayyy@piefed.social 2 points 3 days ago

Republican motto: Accuse others of the things you are doing. Private prisons in the US are using forced labor.

[–] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 days ago

Trump making an announcement?

The only idiot in this equation are the people that actually think anything he says means anything

[–] modernangel@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 days ago

the why is probably a lie, shrug
