That's pretty funny. Wonder how old that joke is?

I didn't know there was sex in the 1940s, I thought it was invented in the 70s...

My guess is that it probably doesn't predate automobiles.

I've never seen that particular phrase used in other legitimate situations.

Mopped floors have probably been around longer than cars

[–] NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

Shut up...bcz i don't have a counter argument!

[–] NABDad@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

I'm my experience, those signs say something like, "Caution: Wet Floor". You don't put up a sign saying "Slippery When Wet" for something that is only wet when you clean it.

Your grandmother was a slut.

[–] jballs@sh.itjust.works 12 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Dang those girls are probably all great grandmas by now, if they're even still alive.

Let's be generous and assume the photo was taken in 1949. Again being generous, let's say those are 18 year olds. That means they were born in 1931 and are currently 95 years old.

Heh, classic

In modern times they would have posed creatively with a Ronald McDonald statue.

I'm kind of sceptical that the term "wet" to refer to a woman being sexually arroused was common vernacular in the 40s.

about 250 years older than that!

1698–1700 [UK] N. Ward London Spy VII: Nor one whore that could have the impudence to ask above Six-pence Wet and Six-pence Dry, for an hour of her Cursed Company.

1832 [UK] Satirist (London) 9 Sept.: [T]he saying has become common, when speaking of what they consider a low girl, ‘Oh! the creature’s wet: she goes to the Piccadilly Saloon’.

1888–94 [UK] ‘Walter’ My Secret Life: Was it not lovely, Charlotte, is not your thing wet?

1920s [US] ‘All Night Long’ in G. Logsdon Whorehouse Bells Were Ringing: We drank one or two as other folks do, / The night was wet, but she got wetter.

1941 [US] in G. Legman Limerick: Her twat would get wet / And would wiggle and fret, / And her cunt-lips would curl and unfurl.

1949 [US] H. Miller Sexus: She was wet as a goose now.

Tell me you've never aroused a woman without telling me you've never aroused a woman.

[–] too_high_for_this@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago

There have always been sexual euphemisms. Media used to be heavily censored, sure, but privately, people were just as dirty as ever.

My great grandpa had a collection of Tijuana Bibles from his time in the Navy in WWII. The horniest comics I've ever seen and chock full of innuendo. My mom found them after he died, along with some homemade smut. I choose not to look at that.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 7 points 3 days ago

WTF, every generation thinks they invented sex. You think women didn't notice that they got wet when they got horny? How do you think you got here? Your great grandparents got horned up and banged like monkeys, and spawned your parents who banged like monkeys to make you, but you're the one who's got it all figured out.

The difference between what was said on TV and what was said in meatspace was much greater back then.

[–] alekwithak@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Yes, the youth don't understand that as you go further back in time the more chaste the media gets, the more purile and violent the people of the time actually were. You may get hit a couple of times in the pit at your local deathgrind show, but you could have easily gotten stabbed at a Beach Boys concert.

Bon Jovi's album "Slippery When Wet" came out in 1986

[–] SamuraiBeandog@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I'm not sure what you're saying?

[–] SharkWeek@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 3 days ago

These girls were obviously Bon Jovi fans

[–] rob_t_firefly@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Just as now, back then there was a whole lot of IRL vernacular in existence which couldn't be used in broadcast media.
