Prusa have shared on their blog the upcoming version of their slicer which is intended to make colour printing easy using CMYKW for 5 colour printers and CMYW for their 4 colour systems

I'm surprised they chose MIT licence rather than AGPL or GPL

I think that's the flavour of free that Joseph Prusa likes, for maximum distribution, but not ensuring freedom for future versions from other people

Seems like the obvious next step would be to combine this with variable layer height to get a continuous range of intermediate tones.

Alternatively maybe something like the Roetz-End which can change colors without swapping filaments by rotating and/or stopping the flow of one of its inputs.

The ratios (in %) are 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, and 33:33:33.

Why not 33:66?

There was like 5 seconds in the video where he brushed over that, but didn't explain much other than maybe something about it not being linear.

There's a handful of videos out about full color 3d printing. It's very impressive, but without color mixing, there are some serious flaws in the process.

Would be interested in seeing how the Prusa method works compared to existing. Especially with an INDX printer.
