checks lifetime jellyfin pass price ... Yup, still $0

[–] albbi@piefed.ca 8 points 21 hours ago

You don't donate to the organizations that provide free software that you use and enjoy? Jellyfin says the authors of the clients could use some donations.

Hypothetical bullshit on what could happen;

July 1st, after a whole bunch of panic buys, "we've listened to community feedback and re-evaluated our pricing to be more in line with our community values. We are happy to announce a lifetime $300 Plex Subscriptions, it comes with an industry leading 2 year of Plex Pass at no cost.

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I bought the lifetime plex pass years ago for like $50, and I wouldn't even pay that today. The service is so fucking subpar, that I assume the only reason people still use it is they don't know any better and aren't technical enough to do the slightly more work involved with making jellyfin functional.

I moved over a few years ago during the pandemic (maybe before, what even is time anymore) and I have 0 complaints.

I get that you like Jellyfin but you don't have to lie about Plex to make the point that this is a shitty move for them to make. Despite this decision Plex's service works just fine. That may change one day but it hasn't yet.

What part of my statement was a lie? Or are you lying and claiming an opinion as fact? Because

Despite this decision Plex's service works just fine.

Has nothing to do with what I said, unless you think subpar means broken. It's doesn't, it just means below expectations.

If I wanted a shitty interface and stuff I don't give a fuck about shoved in my face, is pay for a streaming service and skip hosting my own. Plex was originally about that, but had to enshitify to make money. That's what makes it subpar. But if you want to eat a shit sandwich, I won't stop you. I'm just not going to pretend it's not shit. Because anything that feeds me ads is shit IMO.

How is a 'lifetime pass' a subscription? 🤔

[–] spitfire@lemmy.world 2 points 14 hours ago

Not really a subscription. I’ve paid (I believe it was 75$) for it 10 years ago and I’m still using it.

[–] cerebralhawks@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Time to learn Jellyfin (not hard) and Tailscale (if you want access outside your network, as I understand it) if you don't have a Plex Pass. If you do... still might wanna brush up, because this feels like "if this doesn't work we shut down."

[–] ccunning@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago (2 children)

this feels like "if this doesn't work we shut down."

Nah - this is just “we don’t actually want to sell this anymore, but hey, if you’re desperate we’ll give you an option”

They’ve long ago moved away from the hobbyist media hoarder to…trying to be a streaming player I guess?…

[–] NekoKoneko@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago

All products and services in 2026 are legally obligated to follow the subscription-based "leech extracting blood from a customer for life" model, or on the way to it.

[–] cyberpunk007@lemmy.ca 0 points 22 hours ago

And a shitty player too, one that gives you no options and for some reason forces you by default to recommended items from your own library with no basis on recommendations. Utter trash.

[–] sirico@feddit.uk 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

We knew it was coming as soon as they started getting ideas above their station. No one wanted or asked for D tier streaming yet now they're chasing that bloat.

[–] ms_lane@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Can it read mail yet?

[–] Ganbat@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 day ago

Ah, yes. Insanity.

[–] Codpiece@feddit.uk 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Seriously for that money I’d want some AI thrown in too.

[–] cyberpunk007@lemmy.ca -1 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

So everything about YOUR server and YOUR media can be gobbled up by some LMM?

No thanks. rhays basically the opposite of what anyone self hosting wants.

[–] Codpiece@feddit.uk 2 points 22 hours ago

I was taking the piss about the money grabbing and what else it might lead too.

[–] artyom@piefed.social 1 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Given the trajectory of Plex, I would be unsurprised if they decided in the future they were no longer even going to honor existing lifetime passes. Or add new features and lock them out. This is the kind of thing we've seen lots of other companies do with absolutely no consequence.

So I would think real hard before throwing all that money at them...

[–] spitfire@lemmy.world 1 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Hasn’t happened so far, and I’ve heard so many times (since I paid for it 10 years ago) it would

[–] artyom@piefed.social 0 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Not saying they will. Just that they totally can, completely without consequence.

[–] spitfire@lemmy.world 0 points 6 hours ago

No, I’m pretty sure someone would sue them. Not saying we would all get our money back, but there would be consequences

[–] johlits@lemmy.world 1 points 22 hours ago

Final cash grab move.
