Original research: Mapping ADHD Heterogeneity and Biotypes by Topological Deviations in Morphometric Similarity Networks

I definitely fall into the new subtype though the emotional dysregulation also crosses over with autism.

Okay, but how am I expected to read this?

There's just so much text.

You come to the comments and see if anyone has a good summary of it yet.

They don't.

But someone did mention another bit of information, which I fell down a wikipedia rabbit hole on for about 2 hours! So maybe now I can read the article

Edit: I did it! I also watched two and a half YouTube videos about homesteading.

This third type describes my wife perfectly. She's had lots of other tentative diagnoses like bpd and autism, but has still been struggling to work through it all, and find an effective combination of medications. She actually takes antipsychotics, as well as a high dose of hydroxyzine as needed in emergencies

I only made it as far as "Unlock all articles by subscribing to this international offer" before I lost interest

[–] MasterBlaster@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

Well played.

[–] NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Don't worry, I skimmed it, didn't retain any of the information tho. So, uhh, I guess we're back to square one.

The researchers grouped three forms of ADHD identified in the imaging into familiar – and one less familiar – categories: predominantly inattentive; predominantly hyperactive/impulsive; and a more severe, combined presentation marked by emotional dysregulation or difficulty managing and responding to emotions in a controlled, appropriate way.

My hard mode is on hard mode

I have diagnosed BPD and ADHD and now I am wondering if the BPD is just the secret 3rd form of adhd.

  • disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD)
  • oppositional defiant disorder (ODD)
  • unspecified mood disorders

Cheers

Done. Now what?

[–] huppakee@piefed.social 12 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (2 children)

Wasn't there already research suggesting there is ADHD but without AD, ADHD but without H and also ADHD with both attention deficiancy and hyperactivity? Is this the same theory?

Edit: better to read first and comment after, this is from the article:

In the new study, the first two categories map neatly onto the way ADHD is currently diagnosed, dividing along a well-established line between difficulties with focus and problems with hyperactivity and impulse control.

The third, however, pushes the field into new territory.

This extreme subtype exhibited the most extensive changes across the brain – a total of 45 abnormal areas versus 26 each for the other two subgroups.

It’s a bullshit term, too much attention sometimes, cognizant avoidance othertimes, not a deficit, a management dysfunction.

My childhood difficulties are making ever more sense...

And I'm still struggling with emotions, they're still overwhelming, and I think they've also overwhelmed a lot of the adults present in my childhood.

[–] caseyweederman@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Do you have that but also like, can't tell what feelings you're feeling most of the time? Or is that just me

[–] WalrusDragonOnABike@reddthat.com 5 points 2 months ago

Alexithymia?

Either way, maybe? Idk.

Ngl I’d be interested in participating in a study for this stuff if they’re trying to expand the corpus of data.

Emotional regulation is something that my kid's occupational therapist is totally aware of and working on. It would be really surprising if a child psychiatrist or child therapist were as "baffled" by it as the article seems to suggest.

But it's an important topic, especially in his case, and I learned a lot from the article.

[–] Modern_medicine_isnt@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Probably just baffled on how to explain it to insurance companies.

[–] ArcaneSlime@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 months ago

Noice. Any way to retroactively figure out which I am without going back to the psychiatrist? Broke af rn lol.

[–] TherapyGary@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I've been diagnosing kids with "ADHD combined presentation, with associated emotion dysregulation" for years now

[–] kindnesskills@literature.cafe 1 points 2 months ago

It must feel good to have some hard data to back it up with now, even if it's just one small study it'll make it easier for people to understand.

[–] Noodle07@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Ah.. Well yeah
