Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

wouldn't you like to know :3

[–] Im_old@lemmy.world 21 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah, envy is a terrible thing. 😆

[–] Soulg@ani.social 34 points 2 weeks ago
  1. Context matters

  2. It doesn't matter if I think it's gender neutral, if someone asks me not to use it for them, I stop. Easy

[–] Gladaed@feddit.org 33 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Words have different meanings depending on context.

If the context is "gender may matter functionally' guy is probably representing as men guy.

If your gender shouldn't matter it is gender neutral.

I think you're reading a smidge too much into a shitpost I found on a forum

[–] Tenniswaffles@lemmy.blahaj.zone 48 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Hey, if you're not reading too much into shit posts, are you really living?

[–] Cevilia@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 2 weeks ago

Fair comment :)

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 16 points 2 weeks ago

just like with "it's just a joke bro", shitposts still have meaning.

[–] rtxn@lemmy.world 15 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Shitposts are the result, and consequently, a mirror, of the culture that produced them. Decoupled from both personal ownership and repercussions, they are the purest form of satire, and should be taken extremely seriously.

The word "set" has 430 different definitions in the OED. I'm sure "guys" can manage 2.

Apparently it can

[–] SandmanXC@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Yeah? How many sets did you fuck??

[–] ignotum@lemmy.world 17 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

Just one, the universal set

[–] 0ops@piefed.zip 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Don't talk about my mother that way

[–] ignotum@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Don't talk to your new stepdad that way

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 weeks ago

You wouldn’t know it, it subscribes to another theorem.

[–] a_non_monotonic_function@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Rookie game. Trying banging the set of all sets including itself.

[–] ignotum@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

What would you even call such a set? I guess it would be some kind of... universal set or something? 😁

Dang. Great name game.

My husband and I call each other “bro” (important: we both only have sisters, so there’s no mental comparison to an actual sibling), my sisters and I call each other “dude” and “guys,” and I feel very uncomfortable whenever anyone says the word “dudette,” but it’s still really easy to just not use group terms that others ask you not to.

[–] Holytimes@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago

Out side of socal iv literally never heard anyone say dudette naturally. It always comes across as cringe af

[–] bdonvr@thelemmy.club 15 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Could be one more, if you're asking.

I suppose that depends on if you agree with the premise of the top caption.

[–] SayJess@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 2 weeks ago

That’s none of my business! How many men I’ve slept with is a number that even I don’t know!

[–] luciole@beehaw.org 12 points 2 weeks ago
[–] mrslt@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago

OP, if you want to fuck, just say so.

[–] Sivecano@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 2 weeks ago

You wanna increase the count? ;)

[–] Amputret@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 2 weeks ago

Not that many, about 6.

[–] agent_nycto@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago

You're right, we should double down and use guy more often for everyone, to make sure it's gender neutral. Same with dude.

[–] AdrenochromeBandit@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

This is where growing up in the west has an advantage. We just say y'all. Covers all bases

[–] AltheaHunter@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 2 weeks ago

I didn’t grow up saying y’all but I trained myself to use it when I realized some people were uncomfortable with guys. Unfortunately a lot of people would rather argue about it than make a simple change to their vocabulary.

[–] Railcar8095@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

So, how many y'all have you had sex with?

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

standard english needs second person plural

[–] whoxtank28@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

I like to tell my southern friends how much I like y'all beacause it is gender neutral and inclusive!

[–] FosterMolasses@leminal.space 5 points 2 weeks ago

[laughs in pansexual]

[–] kittenzrulz123@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 2 weeks ago

Idk ive never had sex :3

[–] Draconic_NEO@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 weeks ago

Zero, no matter how you define it.

[–] BambiDiego@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 weeks ago

Like, 4 women. I love those guys.

[–] germanatlas@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 2 weeks ago
[–] Rajtinka@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

I didn't know I was supposed to keep track, but a lot!!

[–] canniest_tod@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Yes, it is. A bunch.

[–] megopie@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

I’ve never had sexual relations with flammable manikin meant to be burnt in the town square to commemorate the failure of the gun powder plot.

[–] ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one 2 points 2 weeks ago

What an oddly specific thing to say.

[–] megopie@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 weeks ago

What you’ve never heard of the town guy? The traditional effigy burnt during celebrations on the 5th of November?

[–] Dippy@beehaw.org 2 points 2 weeks ago

7 guys. Two were women, the rest were non binary. 1 pener.

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago

None. Nor gals. Nor gender fluid. Nor non binary.

[–] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

About tree fiddy

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Context, as usual, is everything.

[–] SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 weeks ago
