The show having a planned ending is good news. Hopefully it means they have an outline of future seasons as well. I haven't seen anything clearly stated online but it seems like at least four seasons is the plan.

Based on season 2 it seems clear to me that season 1 didn't have a clear future ending. They knew where season 1 ended, but didn't know what season 2 would be. Season 2 was world building, so hopefully season 3 gets us setup towards a conclusion.

Apple just bought it, so they’re developing at least one spin-off too.

Actor who plays in series says it's gonna be great.

He’s also an executive producer.

Which doesn’t actually mean anything. Could be a vanity credit.

I thought season 2 was kind of bad. It was like they didn’t realise what made the first season good.

I kinda agree. It was a lot of blue balling, there's only so many times they can tease answers or go "he's going to reintegrate for real this time" without actually revealing anything...

They should have followed all new people in season 2. The story of the existing team had already been told.

Agreed. The other problem is that the show hinges only on one single mystery/plot, which they obviously can’t reveal until near the end. They don’t have anything else to work through and solve. So the longer the show goes, the longer it drags. S2 already started to show that. And since it looks like S3 isn’t the last season, I expect it will be the same as S2, where nothing much really happens.

IMO, they should’ve concluded it in 2 seasons.

Not uncommon after LOST. People still ask the cast and crew what happened on that show. One of the producers paid an influencer to make a YouTube video explaining it. It’s like 3 minutes long. Very concise. They still get asked.

Here’s that video, BTW: https://youtu.be/Np2D1Ot3gUY

So going into a show with twists and turns, big enough stars have the clout to demand the ending in advance so they know they’re not going to be hounded for it by fans later.

The only time I’ve heard of it happening before is with Harold Perrineau on FROM (who was also on LOST and they share a producer). I’ve heard it two ways: one, that he was promised that the ending wouldn’t be some bullshit, or two, that he was told the ending. Either way, he wasn’t going to sign up for LOST 2.0 without assurances.

Thank you for pointing out that From is like Lost, so I now know to avoid it.

[–] diffaldo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 6 days ago

from is good show tho. Season 4 have just started airing.

[–] cerebralhawks@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

And has one of the same producers (Jack Bender, IIRC) and stars (Harold Perrineau (Mike from LOST, the sheriff on FROM)).

Do you just not like mystery-box shows in general, or ones that have shitty/vague resolutions?

Do you just not like mystery-box shows in general, or ones that have shitty/vague resolutions?

The big problem with the subgenre is that it hinges so heavily on the ending. With other genres you can sort of wave off a bad ending and take something away from the journey, but with mystery box the destination needs to be worth the time and emotional investment. I can understand why many people avoid unfinished mystery box shows as a result, especially these days when they could be cancelled out of nowhere.

[–] cerebralhawks@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

That's fair. For me, the journey is at least equally important, if not more so. People would go on forums and talk about what it could be.

I think LOST was a big problem for the genre (subgenre? trope?) because at least when I first heard about it, I thought it was a spinoff or knockoff of Survivor. I saw ads for a show about people on an island and I didn't get that it wasn't a reality show. It wasn't until near the end of the first season when the ads teased the hatch Locke found that I began to pay attention. But on top of that, I think they didn't have an ending planned in advance. Not knowing the ending means the ending is almost certainly going to be an arse pull.

I think with FROM (and some others), they learned their lesson and wrote the ending early on. They have a plan for how to get there. But it's still a problem if the show is cancelled.

You're right, that's arguably the main reason why these shows are so popular. People love trying to work out the mystery ahead of the final reveal and, compared to more conventional mystery formulas, mystery box gives them so much to work with. You see a lot of creativity in the wild theories fans come up and no one is wrong until the very end. That does mean the ending is super important to the overall reception of the show as a finished product, though. Like I think the journey can be the bit you remember fondly if the ending was sufficient, but if it's underwhelming then it just all feels like a massive waste of time - at least for me.

Just here to say that Adam Scott ABSOLUTELY RULES. Carry on.

One of the few shows I'm looking forward to.
