That's... Huge. Given they also are the world's factory, with all the health issues that come from that, it's an insane thing to pull off.

China has been strengthening thier health and worker protection laws (Albiet still far from ideal) while the U.S.A. has been stripping it like a fashonita wesring yesterday's style. We're gonna see this gap between us and china grow.

We've also regressed a lot making it easier for China to close the gap. Our maternal and infant mortality rates were already terrible before gutting Roe v. Wade so those will continue to worsen. Colon cancer rates are spiking in millennials yet insurance companies won't cover earlier screenings. Republicans continue to allow Americans to be priced out of affordable healthcare and in fact are gutting services for disabled, low-income and elderly Americans under Project 2025.

Is it them pulling something off, or the rest of the world fucking up by getting fatter and lazier and eating worse?

...it's only a 0.8 year difference. Obesity is pretty detrimental, so I assumed people in the United States would have a comparitively lower life expectancy. The fact that people in China only live this much longer indicates China has an unhealthier environment, poorer nutrition, or less effective healthcare.

It's a great trend, and I hope it gets better.

I think it has more to do with their rapid urbanization

Prior to the 1950s, only 10% of China's population was considered urban. In the same period, the US's urbanized population was closer to 60%

This gap will likely widen with time. Turtle Island desperately needs socialism and decolonization.

Average Americans might live fewer years, but at least they live free enough to pay their tuition loans, car loan, mortgage payments and healthcare bills.

Average Americans might live fewer years but at least they live in freedom and democracy

Lol i can't tell if this is a joke

"We may die sooner but at least we also live our lives saddled with debt"

[–] porous_grey_matter@lemmy.ml 7 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Looking at their history I think it's a joke, pretty good troll tho, the detail in the grammar and punctuation is just right

[–] bennieandthez@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 2 weeks ago

It's a joke lol tho it's funny that people can't tell, that makes it a great joke.

[–] mrmisses@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

In America, dying early is seen as a plus. This place is hell

[–] tinfoilhat@lemmy.ml 5 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

In America: ICE deports and kills civilians without a trial and your options for political leadership are both backed by corporate interests, Israel, and the Epstein class.

What freedom? What democracy?

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

He said right in the comment, the freedom to give all our earnings to private companies for services we need, and often still not receive them. Nothing says freedom like paying for years into health insurance and then the minute you actually get something serious the needed treatment is "not medically necessary".

[–] bennieandthez@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 2 weeks ago

That's the joke.

[–] dessalines@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 weeks ago

Please use the /s for sarcasm or joking, because many people couldn't tell this was a joke. It also helps people who aren't adept in english, or who have cognitive issues.

[–] bennieandthez@lemmygrad.ml 1 points 2 weeks ago

Hell yeah, the freedom to die young and indebted is truly invaluable.

China is solving most health issues in the country. Unfortunately, some issues were not solved yet.

Some examples:

To sum up, China is doing great, but still has issues related to rapid industrialization and food laws enforcement that I hope will be solved soon. No real country is safe from issues and contradictions.

Just to point out that 2008 was 18 years ago. A lot can change in that time. I don't think it's a fair criticism of today's problems. The first study was from 2023 so like... Fair enough.

I think trajectory is a big point. The us was cleaning up things and many things by the end of the 70's were much better than the start of the 60's. Unfortunately that activity slowed down at a national level as time went by after that. Most positives I have seen have been at local levels and recently the treasonous scotus we have now have dealt blows to public wealfare legislation.

US life expectancy has something to do with access to healthcare. But it's OK, the wealthy can try their best to increase the average life expectancy.......... /s
