Texas is a third world country.

[–] GalacticGrapefruit@lemmy.world 16 points 3 weeks ago

Literally, all of the South is. Atlanta and Austin are the only sane places on the entire northern half of the gulf.

How could they not know this was a bad idea?

They enjoy causing others to suffer.

Shouldn't everyone know about the dangers of Rhabdo since the Crossfit fad happened?

[–] Chozo@fedia.io 15 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

The average person might not know this. But a football coach definitely knows this. There's zero chance these fucks weren't aware of the risks.

[–] Yondoza@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 weeks ago

Average person here just learning about this.

A football coach in San Angelo, TX?

Yeah... Uh, they may not be a paragon of education and physical science. They may not, in any strictly meaningful sense, be literate.

What? What is this? What do I even search for?

[–] Chozo@fedia.io 4 points 3 weeks ago

Rhabdomyolysis. Basically, certain injuries can cause proteins from the damaged muscle tissue to break down and leak into the bloodstream. Those proteins then cause major damage to your kidneys, which are unable to process them. This can result in lifelong complications.

Many of these kids are likely going to end up spending the rest of their lives in and out of hospitals because of this.

You're surprised a red state doesn't keep up with the latest research from the scientists?

[–] Dultas@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah when I did CrossFit briefly ~20 years ago they were warning people about it. Piss ends up looking like Coke (soda) with all the work your kidneys are doing IIRC.

Many were diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, a serious, potentially life-threatening syndrome resulting from rapid skeletal muscle breakdown.

The damaged muscle tissue releases proteins into the bloodstream, which can cause kidney and organ damage, the lawsuit says.

Didn't know that but you think a gym teacher would.

I don't think I ever got close to three figure push ups.

This is a charter school, nominally public education. They recently got the State Board of Education to let them convert from a religious private school to a charter, but barely took a single word of the religious mission off of their "about us" page. Clearly, Jesus and the state of Texas wanted those boys to get rhabdo.
