IIRC, he was created by Vought (the corporation that makes super powered people) to be the perfect justification for them to seize military power in the US.

This is usually used in the sense it's just a coincidence and not purposeful. In this case, I'm 90% sure it's intentionally making a point about real life.

Say what you will about the show, but getting an IDF soldier to play this character is the best casting I've ever seen

[–] deathmetaldawgy@lemmy.ml 23 points 2 months ago (3 children)

One of the characters also has pictures framed in his house one of the black panthers (I think Huey Newton) right next to a framed picture of Obama. Lol

[–] ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml 15 points 2 months ago

If he dies this season, his last words will be "Ruthkanda Forever"

[–] PunkMonk@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

It's MM that does and Obama is literally above Huey lmao

And I found a low quality screenshot from the internet for proof:

There's a lot to hate about Obama but there is one thing he did establish that Malcolm X would nod grimly at; something that may justify his inclusion on a wall of revolutionaries:

Even if a black man who becomes President rules the country like a moderate Republican and is the absolute exemplar of their Christian values, he won't be accepted by the majority of white men. Not only that, they will churn themselves into a frenzy of over-reaction. They will elect a new Hitler just to make themselves feel better. They will lose their goddamn minds like rabid animals, like their grandparents who took their kids to see lynchings and get photographed next to the naked, brutalised corpse.

This point could not have been demonstrated if Obama had not done everything to dance to their tune.

It demonstrates the sheer self-destructive, nihilistic racism inherent in the American system. It shows that electoral politics is not going to fix it.

Obama did not mean to do this. Many revolutionary figures do not. And he did not suffer like the others. So it's still a questionable choice, but perhaps not an indefensible one.

With all due respect I think this analysis is dead wrong. I don’t really have the energy to explain why tho I’m just a little white boy

[–] teslekova@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago

Quite possible. Almost certainly true. But if we don't come up with crazy shit some of the time, only boring shit will turn out to be true!

[–] Olgratin_Magmatoe@slrpnk.net 17 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (2 children)

I'd say it was good casting if he legitimately felt sorrow for the crimes he did on behalf of the IDF, and used his platform to speak out on behalf of those currently being genocided. But in the interviews about it he seems to have a casual view on his crimes, and mostly focuses on his own mental health.

Frenchie as a character has deep sorrow for his past actions, but the actor doesn't seem to.

So in practice it's terrible casting. It shits on all of the messaging of the show.

don't feel like finishing the show now. not even though 🏴‍☠️

[–] 000@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

I mean, what if he does have actual sorrow, though? Sometimes people can take evasive means in public to deal with guilt. We can't use just body language to guess his actual thoughts.

[–] Olgratin_Magmatoe@slrpnk.net 3 points 2 months ago

Maybe he does, but his actions don't indicate it.

[–] RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world 28 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Tbf, the entire point of this guy is that he was made a supe terrorist by a racist asshole fascist super hero, playing the public.

[–] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)
[–] Fisherswamp@programming.dev 14 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Buddy you misunderstood the point. The whole show is a massive criticism of both capitalism and racism. The fact that this guy was a caricature was intentional, both in the boys and as a meta statement by the author. It's saying that western fear of middle eastern terrorists is driven by racist propaganda meant to trick people into accepting forever wars to fund the military industrial complex.

[–] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 5 points 2 months ago (3 children)

That's the excuse but in the end they got a Muslim on screen blowing himself up and that's what sticks in people's heads. You go to his wiki page and it says "Islamic terrorist".

[–] Fisherswamp@programming.dev 7 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I'm not sure how the author's message can be more face up. In the end media literacy is a responsibility of the audience to some degree, and criticizing satire for that which it portrays, or in this case criticizing messaging for that which it mocks is a failure to understand the message.

[–] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml -1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I'd be inclined to agree if the directors made any fun of Israel as well but their stereotypes seem to be limited to Christians and Muslims.

The notable absence of Israel in The Boys which is supposed to be a comedic parody of modern America is telling by itself.

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Thinking this is anti-Muslim is the same level of critical analysis as thinking Homelander is the good guy.

[–] stickly@lemmy.world -1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Maybe you should be lecturing those people about artistic literacy instead of crying to us about the art

[–] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Maybe you should start researching where all of the anti-Muslim propaganda originated from and find out that it wasn't caused by the American military industrial complex, but actually by, you guessed it, Israel.

And by none other than our great friend B. Mileikowski.

[–] stickly@lemmy.world -2 points 2 months ago

I won't because I'm not going to get my knickers in a twist over stuff that fundamentally doesn't matter. It's a caricature on a show known for over the top caricatures. Beyond that I think the whole show is overhyped and I didn't bother to finish it.

Go volunteer or take a walk or find a hobby. It's not healthy to be so hyper obsessed that you're signal boosting rage content that nobody here would have heard/thought about otherwise.

The important thing is to not portray arabs as having self-agency

Reminds me of a BESM rpg someone I knew wanted to run. His idea was "kill Sailor Moon." We finally caved and came up with a party that obliterated the whole crew in one session. My character was stacked with every possible disadvantage so I could get "explodes on death" coupled with "resurrects somewhere safe." I can't remember the blast radius, somewhere between 1 city block and 1 mile radius.

In case you're interested, the rest of the crew was a wizard worth lots of flashy damage dealig spells up his sleeve, one mysterious charismaniac, and one retired Navy Seal sniper. Their roles were, respectively; get their attention, group them all together, and (after I walked near enough to them) shoot me in the head. The wizard also teleported him and the charisma guy away - radio earpieces are cheap and effective.

It was pretty funny watching the disbelief on the GM'S face as our death squad obliterated 5 teenage girls and their creepy stalker in like 3 hours. Most of that was min-maxing. Never underestimate the ability for a bunch of gamers to ruin any possible plan with enough character points and a few hours of prep time.

How about the Irish kid in Harry Potter?

[–] RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

What the hell is wrong with Eric Kripke?

What's that based on, and how recent?

[–] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 8 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Hirring an ex-IDF terrorist to play the role of "Frenchie"

Multiple statements from the other co-directors like Seth Rogan that they're Zionists.

Glaring lack of Israel in a series which claims to make fun of modern politics (weird how stereotyping Muslims was fine but Israel is a red line)...

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 1 points 2 months ago

shit I had no idea...

[–] RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world -1 points 2 months ago (2 children)

This series started well before the wars.

[–] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

And it's still going on...

[–] RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

So...what? When the war started, Kripke should have just fired him, for something he's not even a part of, anymore? And why was he a terrorist, then? I'm aware Israel hasn't exactly been innocent in a long time, but terrorism is a stretch before October 7th.

[–] teslekova@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago

It started in the 1930s?

Kash Patel?

I would have guessed a white supremacist Caucasian Donald Trump supporter, but by the looks of it, I would say Kash Patel.
