Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

If there's one thing I'm not remotely doomer about, it's the draft, it is impossible for the United States to implement a sucessful draft, it's not possible even if there was a popular war

That doesn't mean they can't try and frankly part of me hopes they do; it would become one of the greatest generators of mass revolutionary energy in American history and simultaneously collapse multiple institutions within the military and security apparatus

Barrack riots, millions strong student protests, fugitive networks springing up everywhere, labor shortages, shootouts, mass flight, generational mass radicalization

It would be the single biggest mistake the capitalist class ever made; it would make imperialism real for the average American

This is why no other president after Vietbam war has been stupid enough to do it. Trump could be though, and like you I hope he does.

It would also give the general US population firearms, tactics, and intelligence training.

Part of me is timmy-pray and part of me has absolutely no faith in the American public to ever get off their asses and do anything.

Go ahead. Give me combat training and a rifle piggy.

So if you never signed up for the selective service you won't be drafted? Cause they make it sound like they're drafting from the selective service not the make population at large.

Also yeah I'll take 5 years in jail over murdering civilians every day of the week.

[–] ClimateStalin@hexbear.net 25 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah, the selective service is the draft mechanism. Thats the list they draft people from.

This is just making it so that instead of just being required to register, you’re registered automatically. Honestly it means basically nothing, it’s a mechanical change that just means people don’t have to sign a piece of paper.

Also yeah it’s crazy to me that there’s ever been a single person that doesn’t choose prison time over being drafted. 5 years in prison is way better than dying in the mud after committing crimes against humanity.

[–] Nopeace@hexbear.net 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah like, prison is literally not only safer for myself but any person I would've encountered in Iran or Lebanon. I dunno, our perspective is definitely biased but even so the math is just better with the prison option.

[–] ColonelKataffy@hexbear.net 1 points 1 month ago

they keep the prison system as draconian and vicious as possible as an incentive to convince you to take your chances with the armed forces

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 10 points 1 month ago

If you go to prison for draft dodging you are also pretty likely to be well regarded among the general population.

[–] CrawlMarks@hexbear.net 15 points 1 month ago

I'd get drafted let them train me for a job. Free rent, free food, a little pay, some exercise. Then I would just leave, maybe frag some office on the way out, take a cool gun with me. I'd get to tease liberals I was a vetren. It'd be great

[–] Thordros@hexbear.net 10 points 1 month ago

anakin-padme-2 Oh, nice! That means they have the infrastructure to do it for voter registration, too!

anakin-padme-4 Right?

Doesn't mean they're activating it. But I wouldn't be surprised if this is just more personal data collection.

[–] NewOldGuard@lemmy.ml 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Gross. I didn’t sign up for the draft until I went to university, it was mandatory for admissions. But no matter what you can always but your draft card and refuse to fight

[–] pierre_delecto@hexbear.net 16 points 1 month ago (1 children)

In theory registration was optional in the US, however if you're a male that's unregistered you can't get financial aid for college among other impacts. So it was kind of an echo of what we already have, the poverty draft.

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 7 points 1 month ago

This actually is nothing new. Some years back they already did this when you register to vote.

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago

That's fine I'll just go to prison if they raise the age to 40+, I'd rather 5 years in jail then being ordered to shoot on an Iranian family.
