It's a funny story but copyright does not apply to typefaces in the US so its unclear as to what extent this "font clone" is illegal to begin with
To be fair, this still might be true. Font files are treated the same as regular software and follow copyright.

Well, there was that dude who downloaded a 3d model of a Lambo or whatever and printed it out. Turns out that's not illegal tho, probably because they never thought somebody would do it.
There's also the kids in India that sculpted one from clay and painted it.
