That's right! I want to hear about the bullshit you had to deal with at work this week. Shoutout to those who are working for the weekend and working on the weekend!

This is a work vent thread, if that isn't clear. I might make this a Friday ritual.

My job is very slowly ramping up and I am still locked out of some things so I only put in 30 hours. I would love it if it stayed at that level; 8 hour days are just too long, even for computer touching.

I don't have any work complaints ( yet ), but I'm beginning a food service job next week after years of being unemployed. I'm honestly dreading it. I knew there was a good chance I would end up working in customer service again since I don't have any college education, but food service specifically just fucking sucks. Having to constantly deal with asshole customers who are extremely rude and picky about about their food is not something I wanted to return to. Unfortunately I'm in a position right now where I can't be choosey about where I'd prefer to work and had to accept the soonest offer. I'm just hoping that this place won't be total hell for me and that I'm able to endure it long enough to save some money.

God speed comrade, I believe in you! Working customer service is a thankless taxing gig. I worked in a grocery store for almost a decade in various low level roles, and it was trash most of the time.

Another week of responding to questions with links to our website and politely asking people to use their eyes because I literally can't explain the solution to their problem any differently or better than what is already on the site.

I work in education, doing IT. So I'm not in the trenches like the teachers are, but oh boy, the admins decided to shuffle people around to different grades in our elementary school and folks are pissed.

[–] RedWizard@hexbear.net 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Here is what I know:

  • in 1 on 1 meetings, some people were told they were changing grades and were able to discuss it with Admin. Others were not told and found out yesterday when they emailed everyone the changes.
  • people were asked their preferences, and its clear some people have been assigned their least preferred position regardless.

Intentional or inept? Or both?

[–] RedWizard@hexbear.net 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Hard to say because I'm very disconnected from the day to day of teachers but I have a good read of managers and this principal gives me uncool vibes.

[–] hellinkilla@hexbear.net 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Weird, why did they do that?

Punishing someone? Accommodation? Splitting?

[–] RedWizard@hexbear.net 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Seems to be many things. Dysfunctional grade levels that don't work together. Losing two grade level classes because of low enrollment. This is the building admins 3rd year working in district and probably need to show that they're working on "improving" things. Idk. I do believe I hold some amount of false consciousness about the parties involved. I can't not be skeptical of motives though. This admin set the tone with our department early by making unilateral decisions about student technology without consulting our team. Thankfully that got rolled back after the director talked to them but.

I work in a shitty fast food job in the middle of the city, a specific suburbanite fast food chain known to be popular among fascists due to the lack of seasoning on the food. Here's a list of the bullshit I've endured this week.

Had a woman return to the restaurant to complain about her Hi-C being flat. Hi-C isn't carbonated.

Opened up a guy's box of food to check what was in it because he had a weird order and I couldn't tell that the order was prepared right. He accused me of touching his food and demanded that I remake it. Go back to the kitchen and ask them to remake it. They remake it and I bring the food back to the guy. He accuses me of taking the first box and just put it in another bag. At this point I call my manager over and just have her deal with it because if I had to say another word to this fucker I'm going to get fired.

Had someone complain that their Coca cola was too brown

Constantly get called sir by everybody in the drive through unless I wear makeup (all I have is lipstick) and if I wear lipstick, people are ruder than usual. Even though this restaurant is in the part of town known for being gay.

I compliment everybody that comes through, most people are appreciative but the straight dudes with fragile egos get really pissed over stuff like "Nice haircut".

In good interactions, there's a regular there that is fully bald and owns it, shaves his head all the way down and makes it shiny, has a well maintained beard. I always tell him that his head looks great and shaving it all the way down makes him look younger than the guys who won't own their baldness

Had another guy give me two dollars as a tip because he likes how nice I am to everybody. He had his window open and heard what I said to the car in front of him and liked how my compliments were so genuine. According to the rulebook of this corporation I work for, I'm not allowed to accept tips, but I took it anyway. Got me an energy drink with it.

Had a car of customers offer me some free weed because of my compliments. I turned it down because I don't smoke anymore, and separate from being in sober living, I think if I started smoking again I'd go back to being a wake and bake stoner and I don't want that.

Met a new hire today that is non-binary. I was worried about asking for their pronouns because cis people get really offended by that, but they were happy I asked about their pronouns. I'm usually pretty good at clocking non-binary people, and I've noticed that non-binary people actually appreciate being clocked as non-binary. I'll usually ask for their pronouns right before I'm about to say something gendered and stop myself. Non-binary people, feel free to chime in on this one, I'm always trying to support my enbys more

I work retail but I'm mostly in back of house and don't interact with customers very often. Retail workers are so bizarre to me. They get paid and treated like shit but sometimes they care so deeply about their job even though there's zero reason to do so. So many of my coworkers will, in the same setting, say they just come in for a paycheck and also complain about the unprofitable mismanagement of a department (oftentimes not even their own department!). I have one coworker who was complaining about being disciplined for not taking his mandated lunch break even though there's absolutely no pressure to skip it. Another one freaked out about the box a product arrived in being possibly incorrectly labeled (it actually was labeled correctly). If I tell any of these people we should organize a union for better pay and benefits they look at me like I have a second head but then they act like this and I'm like "you're all desperate for communism and you don't even know it".

I don't have too many complaints otherwise. It's a little boring this time of year but I'd rather that then super busy.

I work both for the weekend and on the weekend. Thumbs down.

The other plumber at the shop I work at quit because he is moving across the state, and sprung it on everyone at the end of the day today. I'm not sure how I feel about it; on one hand he was generally a bad plumber who worked unsafely w natural gas, would sit in his van and tell his apprentice to do the work while he waited. He had a lot of recalls that I would have to pick up in addition to my normal work, and now he is gone so I don't have to deal with his shit, but at the same time our rotating on/off emergency actually worked pretty well somehow and now that he is gone I'm stuck on call this weekend since it was supposed to be his weekend on call. I had to cancel some plans to accommodate and I'm feeling pretty salty about it comrade.

I'm not looking forward to being asked to work on call next weekend too b/c we have nobody else to take the calls. I'm goi g to be a whiny MF next Friday.

+1 for an informal non-stickied work vent Friday ritual

My megacorp’s private equity masters are getting ready to sell, maybe an IPO. So naturally for the last few years they’ve been stripping the copper out of the walls.

Piss off 20-year dedicated customers just to earn another dollar this quarter. Layoff the field until it’s a skeleton crew barely able to function. Corporate processes just… not working. Squeeze and squeeze and squeeze and trim the fat and tighten the belt. Push costs into next quarter and pull profits into this one.

On the bright side, it pays well and my office has become so lean I can’t really get laid off unless they exit the market entirely. And it’s kind of hard to get fired from megacorps if you just put on a smile and play the game and act nice.

Pays the bills and the student loans with a bit to save, a trickle into the 401k, and enough for a yearly week to vacation in Japan. Excellent health benefits.

But man every day it grinds at the soul in a unique way.

Man do I know this feeling.

Upper management intervened yesterday to severely fuck my close friend and to a much lesser extent me. Throwing her under the bus and ruining her life plans because they're incompetent. My manager and team are fucking pissed. My job is safe but she should gtfo if they don't apologize and revert things first thing Monday. I might never see her again if she leaves but there currently isn't a better option imo

[–] Weedian@hexbear.net 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

i drive a paratranist bus and for the most part its chill. I like 99% of my riders some of them can be rude but i brush it off but the thing that gets to me is how rude some of the dispatchers are, treating us like we don't know how to do our jobs when we ask for any help or how they get mega pissed when a driver doesn't respond on the radio in 3 seconds while they're driving but dispatch will ignore a driver calling them then get mad when we call a second time.

Shitty. Thought I was switching with my department manager today, as we had talked about it prior, only to get a call around 9 o clock asking where i was. Apparently he never actually got around to asking about the switch, and I didn't think to confirm it with him beforehand. He ended up opening the department late and having me go through with the switch to close anyway. Weirdly enough I didn't get written up for it, he is going to get written up because????????

This place I work at has the most idiotic upper management I've ever seen. I feel bad for my department manager but he says I'm good, no worries, he's used to how weird and inconsistent this place is. I still want to grab him an energy drink or a coffee or something on my way in tomorrow because it's not fair that he's getting punished for my mistake. Then again I half expect that writeup to never materialize and even if it does, they're not really in a position to get rid of him because it's literally just me and him in the department and the place has enough of a reputation that they're not getting any takers for the assistant dept manager position they've had posted for a while now. (The last one got fired for drinking on the job, which is fine by me because he was an asshole.)

Also going to start paying out the ass for insurance soon which will be better than the total lack of insurance I've had for the better part of a year and a half now, so I can finally go to the doctor and get told in an official capacity that I am too fat and my blood sugar is too high and I'm not sleeping enough or exercising enough without having to pay $800 for it. And hopefully get back to my physical therapist for the occasional spinal adjustment and whatever else I can take advantage of while still looking for another job because as I mentioned the upper management is ass.

I'm still in hospitality, so working on the weekend. Keep getting shortlisted for jobs in my actual field but edged out by people with more experience.

[–] hellinkilla@hexbear.net 3 points 2 days ago

I sort of like the job I am working today and I sorta dont. Its always a tension. Which in turn is in tension with what other job I might be doing on a Friday. And all that pulling against the landlord, the power and internet bills, food etc.

Can't always tell the details tensions which confront me.

Just got off a 10hr shift. Pretty chill night, my boss was crashing out about something when I first came in, but it quickly resolved itself and he left. Been at this place for about ~9 months now, and it beats the shit out of what I was doing before. I get a lot of solo off-shift time, which is kinda where I thrive. Home now, cuddling pups. Get a day off, then back in Sunday.

I’ve had 3 jobs in 3 years, and this one feels really good. Not like in a climb-the-corporate-ladder kind of way, but in a I can learn-and-master kind of way. I was in management hell for the last few years and I’m very happy to be a cog in the wheel.
