God I hate that the younger generations use the word "drop" to mean both "cancel" and "release".

[–] Squizzy@lemmy.world 7 points 3 hours ago

I dont think that is generational. Music dropped for generations and so did plans.

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 9 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Say goodbye to whatever miniscule revenue you were guns get there. The faster these fucking slop bots die the better.

[–] fierysparrow89@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Not with a DoD contract they won't

[–] TrollTrollrolllol@lemmy.world 3 points 4 hours ago

They were getting a taxpayer funded bailout one way or another

[–] NarrativeBear@lemmy.world 9 points 14 hours ago

Wait so the "original" was targeted at children specifically?

[–] DoucheBagMcSwag@piefed.social 55 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

Pop the bubble

Pop the bubble

Pop the bubble

[–] someacnt@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 hours ago

Huh, interesting that pop could be realized this time.

[–] inari@piefed.zip 2 points 4 hours ago
[–] xSikes@feddit.online 7 points 15 hours ago

lol that despite that they need to rely on porn?

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 70 points 23 hours ago (3 children)

Which is an interesting take, because anything sex-related seems to be the only way to make money with AI.

[–] XLE@piefed.social 26 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago) (4 children)

I hope the real reason is that they're running out of money to try new features. But some of their stated reasons, like their AI age verification sucks, aren't so bad either.

...Actually, OpenAI has a suspicious number of reasons why they can't do adult mode. I think they protest too much.

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

nVidia had announced that instead of 100 billion for nothing to OpenAI that they were doing 30 billion for stake, and said they were probably not going to keep giving these 'halo' AI companies money after this.

I also saw a report that banks were starting to get a bit more stingy with money to the same companies.

I think that while there's still plenty of money coming in still, it does seem like the 'take our unlimited cash just because you have AI in your name' phase is wearing out and they actually have to try to convince people now.

Which is a pretty big problem for them, as despite their brand recognition they aren't really seen as the 'leader' in the AI space on any particular front.

[–] wewbull@feddit.uk 1 points 4 hours ago

I think it's that they are preparing for IPO, which means opening their books and being an attractive investment.

Sora was killed because it haemorrhaged cash for each generation. Investors wouldn't be comfortable with that still running in the books.

This is killed because a respectable investment does sell porn.

[–] flamingo_pinyata@sopuli.xyz 22 points 23 hours ago (3 children)

I think it's about video generation. They shut down Sora because it was burning too much money. Imagine how much a massive amount of porn videos would cost.

[–] Arghblarg@lemmy.ca 25 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

This here. The dirty not-at-all-a-secret is that NONE of it is profitable. It is all a money-burning, water-wasting, RAM-market-sucking back hole.

There is no road to profitability unless they somehow convince everyone to pay multiple thousands of dollars per year for subscriptions. At least that's what I keep hearing; evidence otherwise with real references, I'm open to consider.

[–] ranzispa@mander.xyz 1 points 6 hours ago

Sure, but I doubt RAM plays a big role in this.

[–] UnspecificGravity@piefed.social 8 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Yep. I bet the reason they never actually closed the deal with Disney is that Disney discovered that shitty Sora CG cost more than their in house systems.

[–] VindictiveJudge@lemmy.world 10 points 17 hours ago

Or because of that recent ruling that you can't copyright AI generated images. If Disney can't copyright the videos Sora produces, then it's useless to them.

[–] XLE@piefed.social 8 points 22 hours ago

I think even the text prompts are unprofitable. Sam Altman said so once, even for paid plans. I wonder if they're still in danger of bleeding themselves dry. One can dream.

[–] UnspecificGravity@piefed.social 3 points 21 hours ago

That was probably what sunk the Disney deal.

Disney can already make shitty CG animation for basically nothing. What Sora did was offer a way of doing it without any real expertise, but Disney already had that. It was probably impossible for Sora to actually produce lower-tier Disney content for less than Disney is already able to do it for.

[–] UnspecificGravity@piefed.social 0 points 21 hours ago

Yeah, i think they are already doing it as a pass-through with some other company.

[–] vaderaj@lemmy.world 2 points 19 hours ago

And WAR, because government's love to burn tax payers money on useless sh*t

[–] UnspecificGravity@piefed.social 1 points 21 hours ago

They are probably licensing some bullshit to someone else.

[–] Brewchin@lemmy.world 14 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

Isn't all this "OpenAI drops..." stuff (goonbot, Sora/Disney, etc) all because of Altman's recent statement that they're going to switch to being a one trick pony shop? As in: one product, win or lose.

But if it's lose, I guarantee they'll Ministry of Truth that statement.

[–] Voroxpete@sh.itjust.works 3 points 9 hours ago

It's cost cutting. They're burning cash faster than they can raise it.

[–] XLE@piefed.social 4 points 18 hours ago

Their statement in this article has a half dozen different reasons for dropping the project. A suspicious number of reasons, and all of them sound more like excuses. You're definitely right about the Ministry of Truth though, because this embarrassment has been in development since 2024.

[–] riskable@programming.dev 5 points 15 hours ago

What a childish thing.

[–] humanspiral@lemmy.ca 3 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago)

dammit... I was hoping for ad infested AI girlfriends running skynet would save us from skynet effectiveness at genocide.

[–] shweddy@lemmy.world 29 points 22 hours ago (2 children)
[–] unnamed1@feddit.org 17 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I don’t think ai as technology needs saving, but the companies of the bursting bubble do. I love to see Altman struggle

[–] XLE@piefed.social 10 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago)

It's hard to tell when he's genuinely miserable because his face always looks like that.

[–] UnspecificGravity@piefed.social 5 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago) (1 children)

For the simple reason that is is REALLY cheap to make and monetize real porn.

The only people using AI to make porn are people who wouldn't be able to pay for it if they charged what it costs to use.

[–] davidgro@lemmy.world 3 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

It's really cheap to use a WAN model (or whatever the latest thing is) on my laptop to make porn without needing to find and hire a model, or even subscribe to an onlyfans. Also not paying OpenAI or anyone else besides the electric bill.

I don't think that's going away, and I would be a bit surprised if it's not already cutting into demand for the real thing (which I also think isn't going away)

[–] UnspecificGravity@piefed.social 3 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Right, you can afford to do that because the company you are using is taking a loss on the product.

[–] davidgro@lemmy.world 5 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago)

What company? I mean local models.

Edit: Oh, WAN is the name of a model that makes videos, it's not Wide Area Network.

[–] melfie@lemmy.zip 8 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

I’d think that custom AI-generated smut videos would be all the rage. It’s one area where the content being slop shouldn’t matter as much.

Hey, look, that lady has 3 breasts. Aw, here comes Double Dong Danny to get some of that. Man, this is some fucked up shit. Grabs a box of tissues.

[–] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 4 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Genuinely curious if you've found a good porn site that isn't already incorporating these. The ones I frequent have them already fairly regularly but they are heavily down voted and have an uncanny valley feel to them that is a real turnoff. Not at all "all the rage"

[–] melfie@lemmy.zip 4 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Not something I’ve actively looked into, quite honestly. Didn’t find the Ripley’s Believe It or Not museum particularly arousing, so I assume it wouldn’t be my jam.

[–] imdoneinteracting@sh.itjust.works 4 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Were you drunk when you went? After 2 Zima our horizons are wide open (like your mom). That's how JD discovered couches.

[–] melfie@lemmy.zip 3 points 16 hours ago

That’s a good idea; I’ll be sure and pre-flight next time. Also my mom is dead, so I doubt she would mind. Just one extra worm wiggling around in there.

[–] Lanske@lemmy.world 2 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

"Double Dong Danny", that comment made me spit out my coffee and made my day!

[–] DoubleDongle@lemmy.world 2 points 13 hours ago

For a few frames, there are actually three, and it turns into something a lot like a hand when he goes for the ass

[–] kikutwo@lemmy.world 8 points 23 hours ago

Suck it, Trebeck!

[–] lmr0x61@lemmy.ml 5 points 23 hours ago

Damn, they don’t even think the goonbot will sell? They really must be in a tough spot lmao

[–] FaceDeer@fedia.io 2 points 22 hours ago

Yet another area where the big companies are voluntarily leaving money on the table for the open model users to rake in. I approve.

[–] rogsson@piefed.social 1 points 21 hours ago

Why is that shitty product being used

[–] PushButton@lemmy.world 0 points 18 hours ago

Drop it, drop it all Altman!
