Fuck AI

"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

Has anyone tried this? Gotten anything good out of it?

I like Japanese rock. Peak Japanese rock, IMO, is ONE OK ROCK and Survive Said The Prophet. 1OR might not be the best choice because most of their lyrics are in English (and they moved to the US like 10 years ago, it might even be more accurate to call them a California band), but they are my favourite band, so there it is.

So here's the prompt I gave it: "Songs that sound like they're by ONE OK ROCK or Survive Said The Prophet but not including songs by either. Any language is fine and less than half of the playlist should be in English."

It thought about it for a minute and gave me a playlist of nothing but MAN WITH A MISSION songs. 23 of them. All by them. No one else.

You can clarify, so I did! The clarification prompt was, "Also have it feature no more than two songs by any one artist or band."

It gave me FOUR songs, two by MAN WITH A MISSION and two by MY FIRST STORY.

MY FIRST STORY's singer is, IIRC, the brother of someone in ONE OK ROCK, so that's kind of cheating.

MAN WITH A MISSION is a good choice and would have been fine for the playlist to start there, but there are so many good choices, and if MY FIRST STORY were a good choice, why not feature them on the initial playlist?

You might have better luck with pop music or rap music, which seems to be all Apple promotes these days. But I expected more from this.

Meh, it sounds like the usual "AI will change everything!" bluster and disappointment.

I would try it out myself, just for the sake of curiosity, but unfortunately, my $1/mo 3 month thingie I got with my last phone literally expired today, or course.

Fortunately, they didn't advertise it too heavily. The only reason I knew about it was because I followed tech blogs. Oh, and the app tells you when you open it after the 26.4 update.

I just went to check it out but 7GB update for this feature and 8 emojis and a few security updates according to the description. Ugh. Why many word when few do?

Yeah, Liquid Ass bloated the fuck outta iOS (and macOS). I suspect iOS now contains watchOS as well (which is like 500MB-1GB) but I'm not sure.

Out of curiosity I fed an LLMbecile just the list of artists in my music collection and asked them to predict what other artists I'd like in a top-ten format.

Five of the top ten were artists I despise.

They really kinda do suck at everything, don't they?

They really do, and Apple is taking up the rear in the AI arms race. Worth noting that they did not develop Siri, they acquired it. And then fell behind. They tried to catch up a year or two ago, but that completely and utterly failed, and now the latest is, they're licensing Gemini from Google.

Steve Jobs would not have sat for this AI shit and Wozniak, well, he got up and left years ago. He didn't like the way Apple was going before the AI craze. I gotta think some of their spirit is left in the company and AI will all be optional (as it currently is in macOS/iOS), but the truth is, they've been gone for years and Tim Cook is all about appeasing the shareholders, for better or, as is more often the case, for worse. I'm not saying he's a shit CEO; he's very good at what he does, but I miss the artistic/rebellious direction of Apple, which was usually opposite or tangent to the way IBM/Microsoft/Intel were going. Now more than ever, I believe in "Think Different" (-ly), but I don't think Tim Cook does, and he's steering the ship.
