Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

we do not hate cops enough. the part of this about the pigs entrapping mostly special ed. kids and then describing it to the local news as busting a local drug ring operating out of area high schools was fucking sickening. it's good agitprop that they focused on one autistic kid who was entrapped into buying half a joint off an unhoused man. that's a particularly universal case to highlight for people's sympathies. the innocence of it combines well with its innocuousness; i've given a homeless man a joint before for free because he asked for one and i lived close by.

every single centrist lib that watches this will at least come away with the knowledge that the cops are preying on basic human empathy of vulnerable people, even white ones.

reminds me of the case where they framed an arabic man for trying to blow up to a bridge but the guy had a severe mental disability (like down syndrome or something) and he just wanted to hang out in a boat with his new friends from the internet

or the poor arabic guy who was depressed and considering taking his own life and the fbi informant posing as a women interested in him online time and time again tried to convince him to take others out with him and he kept saying it was against islam and they arrested him anyways

Related, from over 20 years ago but this man eventually got transferred back to England and got a Royal Pardon to get out of his 99 year sentence.

it amazes me the morons who thing that guys like oliver are 'sided' as if he doenst point out the asinine things that both parties do, just as the daily show does. its not his fault if conservative idiots just happen to be the dumber of the two idiotic groups.

its only conservatives who will literally provide cover for pedophiles and more because they cant ever be wrong, ever.

Remember how the Dems undermined and abandoned all support for MeToo when the accusations at Biden were levelled? biden-rember

Magician pointing to Tara Reade: "Introducing the invisible woman." Media: "But we can see her." Tara Reade: "Joe Biden SA'dme." Media: "Oh wow! We literally can't see her anymore."

He's on the side of capital, just like both halves of the US uniparty.

Biden armed a genocide.

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 31 points 16 hours ago

I got a slightly scarred lung from the covid i got after Biden said everything was fine and the science agreed

Also, he still owes me $1,200

Oliver is sided. He believes in parliamentary capitalism and you can see his bias when he talks about countries that don't follow that model to the letter.

Liberals like Oliver exist to make the unconscionable palatable to the general public. He normalizes genocide, deprivation, civilian-targeted sanctions, absurd imperialist propaganda campaigns, internalized state violence, and punches left.

In function, the "conservatives" just use the tools given to them by both parties to be nakedly reactionary. The "non-conservatives" (who are generally also quite conservative and reactionary) still enact the same or worse horrors but they do it with slick PR so the people to whom they appeal either don't notice, forget, or rationalize it. Notice that Dems have literally no agenda with any mass appeal, just "we're not them". They aren't attempting a serious political program to achieve results in the interest of the public. If they were, they'd fire all their strategists from the last 20 years and decapitate the party. But actually, those strategists and leaders are the party's reason to exist, they're the closest connections to ruling class interests and eagerly reflect them.

Oliver's main draw is that he presents topics as complex and as doing a deep dive that miraculously fits into something like a 40-60 minute segment. He cites "experts" (ranging from actual experts presenting high quality information to outright bullshitters or propagandists), he has a writing team making things comedic (though they aren't particularly creative...), he takes on a sympathetic affectation and appeals to you the same way whether the message is "climate change is real" or "sometimes we just have to bomb brown people".

Oh, and his wife is a war criminal and by liberals' own standards should be tried at the Hague.

Why is it these people always turn out to be related? Married, or children of, what the hell? Ghislaine Maxwell's father was a founder of Israel.

Oh in this case it's even weirder, she's in the FBI, she's a republican and he met her while covering the republican national convention for the daily show

[–] Kumikommunism@hexbear.net 16 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

You are like an ant spending your whole life on a cracker, convinced you have travelled the Earth if you think the two parties are the opposite "sides".
