Started Pokémon Pokopia!

I have only played a little but it's a fun cozy game. I seem to be going slow, as my kid has played about the same amount of time as me, but has unlocked twice the Pokémon. Have been itching for a cozy game to play for a while. Tried Cozy Grove a little while back but while it was fun in the start I didn't enjoy it for long. Hopefully this will fare better.

Also started Dying Light. I am not really a horror fan, but I added this to my wishlist a long time, probably when it was released, so just wanted to try it, even if I end up not liking it. So, got it on sale.

Just cleared the Prologue and the game isn't bad so far, but then again, I haven't played a night mission yet, and all the zombies have been very basic variety.

Played a bit of Tom Clancy's The Division, slowly clearing the side missions and leveling up. Have cleared the level 20 main mission, and I think level cap is 30, so still a bit left.

Haven't played much Xuan Yuan Sword: Mists Beyond the Mountains or Hard West this week.

What about all of you? What have you been playing and/or plan to play?

It's been a while, but my gaming progress has been at a snails pace.

I've finished SMT V:Vengeace! Overall, I still really like the game, but it didn't leave as big of an impression as the vanilla version did. I'd still recommend Vengeance over Vanilla, I've just played so many SMT games that I eventually hit a bit of a fatigue.

Now, ironically, since then, I've been playing another SMT game: Persona 5 Tactica. Unlike with the main games, I don't care about completely filling my demon compendium in this one, which is the thing I got actually fatigued about.

Tactica has a lot of similarities to the Mario & Rabbits games, which I did enjoy. These aren't proper SRPGs in my book, but rather puzzles with light SRPG mechanics. Often times side-quests even want you to do them in a single turn. The one new mechanic added to the formula is the main thing you're trying to do as much as possible: All out attacks. Basically, under certain conditions, your characters get another turn and you deal massive damage to all enemies within the triangle created by the 3 characters you play with. All you other options just serve to set these up.

The gameplay can get a bit samey. To counteract this, maps themselves are movement puzzles with switches to stand on and similar things.

I like the new story and characters, although the game is unexptedly wordy. If you're good at the ganeplay, half the playtime is cutscenes.

Lastly, I finished Ai: The Somnium Files and started the sequel: nirvanA Initiative. Still a really good time, but this time around, you don't play as Date and there are less branching paths. You know, the best things about the first game. I'm close to the end, I think, and my overall opinion is heavily dependant on the resolution. The mystery is fun, but it only stays fun if the explanation is both good and had a lot of foreshadowing - once again, like the first game.

I still have to play Persona 5. Just looked it up, and it was released in 2016! (2017 world wide). Any tips? I locked myself out of P4G true ending, so that's my fear with these games now. Don't want to follow a day-by-day guide since it removes all the fun, but don't want to mess up my characters that I get stuck.

Loved AI: The Somnium Files, hope the sequel is just as good!

There is only one hard requirement if you want to see everything and get a 'true' ending of Persona 5 Royal. Depending on your other choices, some additional scenes may vary. The requirement is a confidant you need to level:

Name/Rank/DeadlineMuraki / rank 9 / before 11/17

To get the most out of royal, you should level these 2 as well:

Name/Rank/DeadlineKasumi / rank 5 / before 12/22

Akechi / rank 8 / before 11/17

Everything else doesn't matter. You cannot complete all confidants, so don't stress about them. Just do what's interesting to you. Just meet these three characters whenever they are available.

Oh and don't wait until the last day of a deadline to finishes Palaces. Until after a Palace is done you cannot level you party member confidants.

[–] slimerancher@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

Thanks, noted these down. Will keep them in mind when playing.

@slimerancher@lemmy.world I definitely recommend reading the first spoiler above. Missing that makes you lose a huge chunk of content, it's bad enough that I always say "spoilers be damned" and tell that to any friend of mine that plays P5R.

You cannot complete all confidants

It's definitely possible, I did it my first run through Royal with some time left over. But I agree that this game is better enjoyed if you don't stress trying to get all confidants maxed.

[–] slimerancher@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

How long did you take with each palace? I played a bit of Persona 5, until I reached the first palace. Wanted to do it all in one day, but don't think it was possible.

[–] De_Narm@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

Playing on merciless, I completed them all in the minimun amount of days possible. You are forced to leave palaces before their respective boss or at certain breakpoints for the story to continue.

I often got to these points by the skin of my teeth, but I love resource management in dungeons and think they are best enjoyed this way. But no shame in leaving more often if that more fun to you.

I started Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time this week. I jumped into it blind, and wasn't expecting it to be so hard. But I'm really enjoying it so far, about 5 hours in.

[–] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

By the end of that game you will feel like a god. Keep experimenting with move combinations!

[–] MoogMuskie@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It definitely seems like that kind of game. I didn't really learn many combat moves while playing through, so by the time I got to the first boss, I was utterly stuck. 13 deaths and nearly 1 hour later I finished up for the night. The next day I started a second save file just to practice the combat moves, and ended up getting all the way up to the same boss fight lol. I got him down to his last bit of health and dropped out. So I'm going to return to my first save file tomorrow and finally whoop his ass.

[–] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 day ago

Nice yeah it's definitely one of those games where it pays to experiment and just like whale away in an empty room coming up with moves.

[–] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 2 points 2 days ago

Chrono Trigger, and Quake 2 and Valheim co-op with a friend

Thank you for asking me about Pokotopia. I “finished” it today and I’m really mad about it. First, it was an almost perfect formula for me. It was a Dragon Quest Builders sequel without all that pesky fighting. But I made the mistake of Spring Break: I poured time into it. Instead of playing a little or even an hour each day, I spent five hours plus for a week fulfilling main missions and moving the story forward. The problem is that the main story is not the point of the game, so when I’d completed the story, I felt done and unsatisfied.

To anyone else playing, I recommend devoting yourself to whatever you find in it that it fun. For me, it was paving roads. I don’t think I had a more enjoyable three hour period than when I put yellow stone flooring throughout the town. When I mentioned it to my wife, she commented that “of course you love the infrastructure parts”.

Dollar to hour enjoyed ratio was excellent, but I should have known better and paced myself on the game. There’s more to it, though. As soon as the credits were done, I found a new Pokémon.

Little Rocket Lab and Pokémon Pokotopia spoilersI was amused that the ending for Little Rocket Lab and Pokotopia were basically the same.

Most of my “gaming” is getting the next season in my Kahoot! Challenge for my 7th grade students. This season will be based on softball and baseball, and programming the excel spreadsheet to take in Kahoot data and spit out a baseball box score has occupied a joyful majority of my leisure time. The spreadsheet is getting so big that between mass copying formulas, I had time to write into my favorite thread on Lemmy.

I have been mainly doing main missions, and have just unlocked the next map, but decided not to move forward until I have done everything in the first map. So spending time to get all the Pokémon I can get here, and cleaning up the main area nicely before moving on.

I work 2-3 nights in a row with 2-3 off in between, so I've been limiting myself to only jumping into Pokopia once between each batch of shifts so that I won't overdo it. Once I start though, that's it for the day - it's bedtime the next time I'm aware of my surroundings.

I mainly just chill out in Palette Town (or Paulette Town because my Ditto is named Paul), building habitats and trying to make it into a nice little village. Despite spending at least a good 20 hours there I've barely made it 30 seconds' jog away from the entry road. I'm basically only doing the story so that I'll have more options for building and more friends to bring in, like I think I'll need to get into the next (4th) main map to find cable cars to unlock the item for one of Eevee's mates. I just like making my own little slice of paradise in post-apocalyptia.

Since I'm working this weekend and only have my Switch, I'm bouncing between Pokémon Violet, Scarlet (for exclusives), Arceus and Sword just doing a few little tasks each day in my endless quest for a shiny living dex.

I've also been playing a bit of Gale of Darkness now that it's been rereleased. I played a lot of Colosseum as a kid, but never managed to get a copy of this one. It's pretty rough, but about what you'd expect. Some of these models and animations are insane.

Looking forward to getting back to Monster Hunter Stories 3 and Resident Evil Requiem next week.

Very little gaming time since since I've been busy with a Magic the Gathering project - building on a box of Premodern decks, a "nostalgia" format with only cards printed between 1995 and 2003.

I don't have the time or interest to keep up with the crazy speed of MTG releases nowadays, so this type of format that doesn't require updates suits me better. The idea is to have a bunch of decks ready and use it as a board game of sorts, just pick up a couple decks and play any time we feel like it.

Will still be working on this for a few more weeks, but now that I got the lists defined and I finished organizing which cards I own and which cards I need to buy/trade I should have more time for gaming again.

Playing Witch on the Holy Night!

Progressing through Chapter 8.

Playing Astalon: Tears of the Earth!

Current side-game. An old-school metroidvania with 3 different characters (the classic "warrior, mage, archer" trio), each with different strenghts, weaknesses, and traversal abilities. The map design is great with interesting puzzles, the challenge is "just right" so far and bosses are fun. I think the balance between characters is not great (mage seems way better than the other two), but that's not a major issue.

However... the checkpoint system really sucks. Health recovery is very limited and anytime you die you go back to the entrance of the castle. Sure, there's some fast travel spots and you unlock a ton of shortcuts so getting back to where you were before will be much faster than before, but these runbacks get tedious very quickly. I'd also like to add that the key required to use the fast travel is a missable item, which is just mean in a game with this design.

I have always been interested in MTG but never got into it because of the same reason, don't have the time or budget to keep up with everything they keep releasing. This is kind of why I was interested in Disney's Lorcana, but haven't kept up with it either. Premodern looks good, but I'll have to start from 0, so not sure want to do that either.

[–] Phelpssan@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

The easiest option if you want to play MTG without the need to keep updating is to buy some Commander Preconstructed decks (ideally from the same set) and keep them unmodified.

These decks meant to be played against each other and usually well balanced. Just find a collection with aesthetics that appeal to you, get 3-4 and have fun. There's the option of "in-universe" sets with classic MTG aethetics like Tarkir, Lorwyn or Bloomburrow, or "crossover" sets with popular IPs - they just released TMNT, and there'll be Marvel and Startrek later this year.

The biggest thing to keep in mind is that Commander by far the most popular way to play MTG - but also the most complex one.

It's free-for-all multiplayer mode with politics, singleton 100-card decks and crazy interactions. If you have an MTG-playing friend they should be able to help you get started, but otherwise I'd suggest playing the free Magic Arena game which has some good tutorials, or look for Youtube videos - there's a ton of content to help people get started.

[–] slimerancher@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Thanks for the info. Will look into these.

[–] sdcSpade@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 days ago

Played more Vision of Mana and misunderstood how skill points work the entire time. I thought they were shared among all characters, which didn't really make much sense to me, but the system with the extra points from gold clovers had me utterly confused.

Meanwhile, in Fallout 3, I'm finally getting to use the one mod that I prepared (aside from bugfixes and visuals). I want to play mostly vanilla, but when I looked through the list of companions to prepare my playthrough, I noticed my favorite companion from my first attempt to beat the game was missing. I experimented with a bunch of mods back then and just forgot this was one of them. But I want to have Bittercup as my companion! She and my character, Jimothy, are two very different kinds of idiots who just happen to perfectly misunderstand each other. I'm almost ready to follow the main story again, but I'll stop by a DLC that is not too far away from Megaton, though I remember really not liking that one...

Arma Reforger and maybe The Long Dark

[–] slimerancher@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I have heard good things about The Long Dark, how are you liking it?

[–] Zen_Shinobi@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago

I'm really liking it! I'm taking a short break from it (weather is getting nicer out) but this type of survival game is right up my ally. It's cool David Hayter and Jennifer Hale did voice overs

[–] B0NK3RS@lazysoci.al 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Played a bit of Tom Clancy's The Division, slowly clearing the side missions and leveling up. Have cleared the level 20 main mission, and I think level cap is 30, so still a bit left.

TD1 is a great game and it turned 10 years old the other day. The snowy city is beautiful even though its a quarantine zone :/

[–] slimerancher@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Oh yeah, the city is great. I also love the overall world-building and the visuals. I would've loved it more if it was a single-player game in this world, but knowing ubisoft, it probably wouldn't have been much different.
