GOP lawmakers returning from their Doral retreat are voicing deep frustration about the party’s lack of accomplishments and are divided over how to spend their remaining time in power.

House Republican leaders are publicly projecting confidence about their chances of holding the majority in the midterms. Privately, many of their members sound far less certain.

Gathered this week at a Trump-owned resort in Doral, Florida, to coordinate strategy for the rest of the legislative year and the looming campaign season, Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., struck an upbeat tone, telling reporters, “Do not bet against the House Republicans” as they try to maintain their narrow edge in the chamber.

But beneath the public optimism, there is deep frustration — and, in some cases, outright pessimism — simmering inside Johnson’s conference.

“No one thinks we’re keeping the majority except for the speaker,” one House Republican, who requested anonymity to discuss the internal sentiment, told MS NOW.

Once again, this feels a lot similar to the runup to the 2024 election. Dozens of articles all saying "Republicans are nervous! Democrats are practically guaranteed victory! Lots of people are saying this!" Right before getting utterly defeated.

Do not rely on hopium, treat this election like an uphill battle because it absolutely fucking is.

They are going to fuck with the elections. Hard. Dems don't need to pull off a victory, they need to pull off a victory so overwhelming that they win even with Republican hands on the scale. That's IF we even get an election in the first place.

And for those of you saying if they cancel the elections we'll riot, well... gestures back to the countless lines in the sand stretching off into the distance

Nothing will change unless we elect law and order leftists to replace these fascists.

Regular Democrats are either MAGA Lite or "It's time to come together to wet blankets"

[–] Gates9@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 hour ago

It’s a good thing the Democratic Party leadership is in favor of most of the same stuff!

[–] A_norny_mousse@piefed.zip 20 points 8 hours ago

One thing is for sure: if they "win" it stinks to high heaven.

[–] ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one 17 points 8 hours ago

You have to respect the dedication to the grift.

[–] iltoroargento@lemmy.sdf.org 10 points 8 hours ago

Anyone still tied to the Republican party is beyond saving. I can't stomach the quotes in this article. They're all so stupid or straight up evil.

[–] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 18 points 10 hours ago

Vote Republican if you want your representative to shrug their shoulders and say "ask Daddy Trump" when you need anything.

[–] favoredponcho@lemmy.zip 9 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

Why is Congress full of do nothing wimps? They defer everything to the President. Even democrats who are supposed to fucking oppose him.

[–] EtAl@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 hours ago

Corporate interests and/or AIPAC.

[–] sturmblast@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago

Threats, intimidation, and empty promises

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 67 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

GOOD.

they should be afraid of more than just losing their jobs.

[–] FenrirIII@lemmy.world 0 points 2 hours ago

I've heard the French have a novel way of dealing with traitors

[–] HazardousBanjo@lemmy.world 13 points 10 hours ago (2 children)

I hope the Dems are preparing for the inevitable massive coup attempt Trump is going to pull with this coming election.

Every single dirty trick from siezing ballots to dumping mail-in votes to sending ICE to arrest Dem voters.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 13 points 9 hours ago

Yeah this will be the most corrupt election we see until 2028.

[–] ChristerMLB@piefed.social 2 points 7 hours ago

I wonder how effective it could be to infiltrate those organizations that scrutinized votes the last election - yeah, they were pro Trump, but I also think they had a lot of people who were genuinely worried about cheating

[–] TootSweet@lemmy.world 42 points 13 hours ago (5 children)

I really hope Democrats are smart enough not to count their chickens before they hatch. Everyone remembers going to bed on election night 2020 expecting to wake up to news that the U.S. would soon have its first female president, right?

[–] 4am@lemmy.zip 21 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

You mean 2016. It’s been 10 long years of this shit. I don’t have any cortisol left

[–] TootSweet@lemmy.world 8 points 11 hours ago

Oh. Jesus. Yeah, you're right. -.-

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 18 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

The DNC has been draining the "victory fund" that was stolen from the state parties and were a year deep into the largest reinvesture from DNC to state parties everywhere...

That and going back to "fight everywhere" is why we keep flipping special elections.

You don't need to hope, it's already happening.

If you're hoping billionaire owned mainstream media decides to tell you about it tho, you'll be waiting a long time. They're not happy about it, and they're doing a pretty good job of keeping the masses ignorant, there's no reason they'd change course

[–] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 1 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Let's add to that giving people someone to vote for.

DNC strategy had been to run dogshit candidates because "hey who are you else are you going to vote for?"

The candidates that are winning now are further left and not water carriers. The base finally gets the problem it created by listening to blue maga/ ABWD as long as they did.

You can't change change an electorate, at least not in the course of one election cycle. You want to change an electorate? Start speaking the truth and keep giving the same speech as nauseum just like uncle Bernie did. But in the course of a single election, run candidate that meet the electorate where they are at.

[–] Serinus@lemmy.world -2 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

I love Bernie, but he was boring as shit and clearly didn't win. Repeating things is fine to an extent, but you need more than three sentences.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 6 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

You know that Bernie lost the primary because the DNC cheated for Hilary, right?

Yes those documents were leaked by Russians. But they still existed. (Mostly, at least.)

The entire primary set up also is pretty biased. We don’t know how Bernie would have done outside a couple states because most states never got a primary vote.

Further, Hilary was soft amid the same people that were passionate for Bernie.

He might’ve been “boring” but he actually had a chance at winning and the DNC decided to fuck that up.

[–] Serinus@lemmy.world -1 points 3 hours ago

It wasn't primarily the DNC.

The biggest "cheat' was the media lying about superdelegates as though they had already voted.

[–] Hideakikarate@sh.itjust.works 10 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

I was working night shift during the elections. Watching it all unfold produced a lot of feelings.

[–] DagwoodIII@piefed.social 2 points 3 hours ago

Similar.

Left work after the election had been called and had to travel home wondering WTF was going to happen.

And then, it got worse.

[–] JeeBaiChow@lemmy.world 4 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

You mean not voting, right? Thats how the sitouts gave us trump.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago

I find it interesting that you assume they would not have voted for Trump.

[–] bitchkat@lemmy.world 3 points 11 hours ago

In 2020, there were two white men running.

[–] Sam_Bass@lemmy.world 3 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Consequences happen. Learn.

[–] Chais@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 hour ago

I fear the only thing they'll learn is they have to powergrab faster.

[–] Prove_your_argument@piefed.social 10 points 11 hours ago

Well I mean, the GOP in congress is not really doing their jobs, right?

No surprises they are getting voted out. That's how it's supposed to work. All their eggs are in an unpopular basket and they, the elected representatives of millions, are choosing not to go with what their constituents actually want.

They don't actually represent their constituents though. They represent the people who fund the party.

[–] Nobody@anarchist.nexus 19 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Johnson is hoping Trump and Elon can steal the next election the way they stole 2024.

https://thiswillhold.substack.com/p/she-won-florida-used-a-fake-county

Honestly, hard to say. The numbers should be overwhelming, but they are far more entrenched now.

[–] ChunkMcHorkle@lemmy.world 3 points 6 hours ago

This explains why they are trying SO hard to get rid of mail-in votes: they're not hackable. Nor, it seems, are votes cast in early voting, where available and where state law dictates they must be counted prior to Election Day. And because elections are handled by the states, not every state is served by that specific Election System Company That Shall Not Be Named (but invariably is).

I remember watching that fuckery on Election night, how it seemed to be progressing naturally, both presidential and down-ballot races alike, blue and red both having the usual pauses and surges, and then the whole presidential thing seemed to begin to surge red all at once across the board around 9pm Eastern time, almost as though someone flipped a switch, but with enough variation to make you think nah, I must have imagined it.

But having already read The Path to Florida many years earlier, I wasn't so quick to write off my lying eyes.

And nothing that has happened since that night has caused me to change my mind.

[–] Eryn6844@piefed.blahaj.zone 5 points 10 hours ago

I hope the succeed in one thing LOSING and for a LONG TIME. the american people are DONE with this crazy crap.

[–] JeeBaiChow@lemmy.world 9 points 12 hours ago

It wont fucking matter if the sitout voter base doesnt get off their stupid collective virtue signalling ass and do something this time.

[–] OwOarchist@pawb.social 3 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

There's still time for them to, you know, actually do their jobs.

Impeach, prosecute, and imprison Trump and his cronies, pass a universal healthcare bill, end this stupid war, and about 50 other things, and they might even earn my vote in the midterms.

[–] Serinus@lemmy.world 2 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

I was gonna say, this is how they win. They already own all the media. They could do this and then create the story they want people to believe out of it. CNN, FOX, WaPo, and the new Daily Show without Jon Stewart will blast their new message.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago

Doesn’t matter how evil you are, if you can be competent, all any one will say for a while is, “at least he’s not Trump”.

They fail the competency-caveat, though.

[–] just_another_person@lemmy.world 1 points 12 hours ago
[–] fizzle@quokk.au 0 points 10 hours ago

Pretty sure Trump thinks they're going to retain the majority, one way or another.
