I am self-employed and my boss is an incompetent jerk.

I've already punished myself with a pay cut.

I’m gonna sue my ass for what I did to me!

Don’t even get me started on all the sexual harassment going on

For me personally, the trick was realizing that:

  1. I already know it needs to be done
  2. I know I'll feel good for getting it done
  3. I'm not lazy

And then realizing that time blindness has a huge deterministic impact on the causality chain of your life.

Imagine you are doctor Manhattan. Doctor Manhattan has clear view of his entire personal timeline. He knows exactly when he is meant to do what he needs to do.

ADHD makes you completely and utterly time blind at worst, or a bit tardy at average, or on time if you've developed great coping skills.

So the trick I realized is prioritization. You need to convince yourself that the present moment is the point on the timeline you were meant to complete this task.

Anyway I hope that makes sense to everyone. It worked a treat for me.

Edit:

Relevant fiction that helps cement these lessons. Watchmen (2009), Steins;gate (anime)

"Junk food as a reward" is something every expert I've ever heard talk about it says is a terrible idea, and I don't think this is unique to ADHD (just probably exacerbated by it). More generally, "Food as a reward" undermines healthy eating.

That brushes up against "well then when should I eat junk food? never?", and that's something I can't tell you. The most balanced mindset might be to treat it like many treat alcohol – both poison to your body – and eat something junky occasionally when you're out with friends or just want to relax one night.

But tying it into "I earned this" is detrimental psychologically, even if it feels natural to gate junk food behind effort so you (in theory, rarely in practice) don't overconsume. Imagine if you gave yourself a shot of whiskey every time you finished x amount of work.

A line of cocaine for every completed task!

[–] TheTechnician27@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

sigh

Who let Elon in here?

[–] astropenguin5@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Shouldn't the cocaine come before the task so you can focus tho?

[–] Samskara@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

First task is to prepare a nice line.

Or: How a dealer becomes a customer

[–] someacnt@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Since reward system does not work for me, instead I punish myself whenever I could not finish tasks in time. I do not deserve any rewards anyway. Dunno why I feel so miserable...

[–] captain_oni@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 month ago

I tried this method. I can attest that it doesn't work.

Only thing it gave me was a new kink

Amateur,

You need to always have a bigger reward for the end.

If you are gonna have a cookie now, then clearly you need to have two when you’re done.

Unless you eat two halfway through…

[–] moondoggie@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

I would eat both of them all the way through, then eat a third

[–] Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 month ago (5 children)

My brother in christ, you are all I see in /new. How do you manage to average more than a post a minute? You're a meme machine

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 19 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Stamets does not respect the temporal prime directive.

Pretty sure he's said previously that he often queues up posts in advance and just hits the submit button in batches.

[–] Stamets@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 month ago

I have not said that lol

I open a tab and then middle-click on a folder I have. It opens tabs of every community I post to. I throw that on the right side of the screen, I open my file explorer on the left side, and then I jump into the relevant folders and throw a post into the community. No queuing.

I'm choosing to believe that the explanation is paranormal

[–] SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I was expecting it to be LadyButterfly she/her

[–] Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 month ago

Butterfly and stamets pretty much run the meme side of this site, tbh.

[–] Stamets@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's my thing. I just took a bit of a break from posting and have been slowly ramping up to what I normally post like. This is nothing.

[–] Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You were missed. Hope all is well in the great white north

Legit. The only thing that works on me is the anxiety of letting other people down and being the weakest link.

If other people's dependency on me doing my job is removed, I will be that fuck who swirls in their chair all day, watches youtube and go on spontaneous walks.

[–] Diurnambule@jlai.lu 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I build a system to harass myself... It work a little. I can report task but most of them are done timely. Rescheduling is like 5 forms... Too long and repetitive... I noticed that I try to avoid putting task in since I dread the harassment... But it get thing done.
