Watched a video about why 3rd rock from the sun and dinosaurs 'failed'
In the case of 3rd rock from the sun, it's obviously not because the show wasn't good, it was because the studio decided 'we have more profitable shows' and even though it was still making them a ton of money, they decided it was time to end it because they didn't have anything they could do with it.
In the case of dinosaurs, the creators wanted to tell deep stories that ultimately didn't find much purchase with the intended demographic, children, and began to not be as profitable as it used to be (again, 'not as profitable', not 'losing them money').
I'm also reminded of how EA took to dead space 2's 'failure'; they set unrealistic goals for how much it was supposed to earn them, it didn't meet the target, and they considered it a failure and decided dead space 3 should be more action oriented.
And, now obviously not an art thing but since I also love food I'm going to throw this in here, the KFC double down; I loved that thing, but apparently KFC decided it was cannibalizing the profits from their other products which had better margins, and decided to axe it.
Also probably worth mentioning although I think most people have now heard this story, but George Lucas actually liked that in the Soviet Union, provided you didn't talk about the government, you could get funding to tell any kind of story and make whatever kind of movie you wanted without worrying about upsetting shareholders.
Capitalism ruins everything.
