/c/TenForward: Your home-away-from-home for all things Star Trek!

Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. Use spoiler tags in comments, and NSFW checkbox for posts.
This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

~ 8. No Political Upheaval. Political commentary is allowed, but please keep discussions civil. Read here for our community's expectations.

Fun will now commence.

When questioned on his whereabouts during this incident, Commander Tuvok only had this to say:

Ok, this deserves all the upvotes.

.........that is definitely not a Dyson, though.

"And do not call me Shirley, sir."

Dysons are bagless tho

She's gone from suck to blow!

Hm, is there sci-fi set inside a Dyson sphere? I am aware of Ringworld, but I want an actual sphere with a star in the center.

[–] hydrashok@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 month ago (2 children)

TNG S06E04 “Relics”

Other than that, I can’t think of any.

[–] state_electrician@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Yeah, I remember that one. But it's just inside the Enterprise and on the outside of the sphere. So weird that there's nothing with an actual sphere.

[–] hydrashok@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago

They get pulled in in the second part of that episode, but it’s more a “how do we escape” plot than a “look at this cool Dyson sphere” one.

[–] teft@piefed.social 2 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Here is the D being tractored in. You can see the inside of the sphere in these shots.

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

When we consider that a dyson sphere encompasses a star and therefore has to be at least several AU to not fall into it, then the interior shot is laughably not to scale.

[–] kieron115@startrek.website 1 points 1 month ago

just use all the free power to reinforce the structural integrity field. what do you mean that would violate conservation of energy?

[–] nightwatch_admin@feddit.nl 1 points 1 month ago

Had me in the first half, not gonna lie.

[–] CADmonkey@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

That is the episode that introduced me to the concept.

[–] Odo@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

The Endymion books (followups to Hyperion) get into building one.

[–] Bane_Killgrind@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 month ago

Deathgate cycle has one, but it's rocks and plants

In some of Neal Asher's books there is mention of a Dyson Sphere being constructed.

If you want to have a go of making one yourself, there is Dyson Sphere Program.

EDIT: "Bowl of Heaven" is another "not exactly a Dyson Sphere" novel, it takes place on a structure that is half a Dyson Sphere. Co-written by Gary Benford and Larry Niven. (author of "Ringworld")

[–] ratel@crazypeople.online 1 points 1 month ago

In Hamilton's Night's Dawn trilogy the Mosdva have constructed a partial dyson sphere (interlinked diskcities)

The vacuum of space

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's not just a space ship - it's a Transformer!

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

this meme sucks!

[–] ColeSloth@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

But the vacuum was clearly a clone of a late 70's Kirby or Royal vacuum cleaner.

Design is pretty far off from the orecks.

[–] Washedupcynic@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 month ago

I laughed out loud at this. Including the space balls giant suction robot was inspired. As I scrolled down, I was expecting to see a random dyson vacuum just pasted into the next panel. 100/10. PM doing the lord's work here.

[–] orbitz@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 month ago

Out of order? Fuck. Even in the future nothing works.

(At least until the 3rd act)

It's going to be really funny trying to explain to aliens that our name for their pinnacle of engineering megaconstruct is just some dude's name
