Chuck Schumer is not only failing to meet the moment by not opposing the war on Iran. He has long been a hawk on Iran among Democrats and Americans who are yearning for peace.

Oh… now it’s time? It hasn’t been past due?

[–] Gammelfisch@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

Indeed, fuck Schumer and Dems who work for Israel and support the war.

Chuck Schumer will go down in history as one of the most vehemently hated political figures from this time period in US politics and for good reason.

[–] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 63 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Democrats of this period will go down in history as the functional mechanism by which the fascists were able to take over.

[–] Wammityblam@lemmy.world 23 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I fucking hate that our options for political parties are inept or evil

[–] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 34 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

outwardly inept or evil

Schumer and Jefferies didn't slow-walk votes on war powers resolutions for two weeks before this new war because they thought it would fail; they slow-walked it because they didn't want to have to put Democrats on record as having voted against it. They didn't want to have Democrats being held accountable for the manner in which they govern and the consequences which extend from that governance.

The Democrats only appear inept if you misidentify their objectives. When you recognize that most of the party and definately party leadership, by and large, have the same goals as the fascist party, it becomes more difficult to interpret their alleged incompetence as being anything other than performative. They achieve the goals of their funders. If you are Israel, you are getting what you paid for.

[–] minnow@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago (6 children)

This is why I'm giving up on changing the DNC and refocusing my efforts on changing the voting system from First Past The Post to Rank Choice.

But we also need the fascists out of power, and kept out of power.

These two things have to be achieved in parallel. That's why I vote Democrat, but only until I have Rank Choice at which point the Democrats will become my second pick (and then eventually third pick, and hopefully someday not one of my picks at all)

[–] stylusmobilus@aussie.zone 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

changing the voting system

You can’t do that until you get the people who can and will do that in power. Logically for the US, the way its voting system is structured and how people vote, the only way to do that is primary out the bad within one of the parties. Again, logic tells us which party that is.

Personally I think the only way out of this is a peaceful sustained shutdown by the people or by some miracle it implodes, but the voting system won’t be changed until there are enough people in power willing to do it.

Edit: removed an assumption paragraph in the middle, I should have paid more attention to your last.

[–] tedd_deireadh@piefed.social 6 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I think this is why we'll never see ranked choice voting. Both the Democrats and Republicans know that it weakens their power. We've already seen multiple states enact laws that specifically ban ranked choice voting for their states.

[–] Ryanmiller70@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago

Yep it just got outlawed in my state by lumping it in with some amendment making it illegal for non-citizens to vote (which was already illegal, but people are morons).

Now that would be a beautiful thing. Third party voters such as myself wouldn't get so much hate if ranked choice is an option.

Only because Mitch McConnell is almost dead.

[–] TheFogan@programming.dev 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Well I think Schumer may be more UNIVERSALLY hated, because he sucks for both sides. If you think tax cuts for the rich are great, that Isreal should be able to do whatever the hell it wants, that wars are a good thing, you'll love McConnel, Schumer on the other hand sometimes says words to pretend to oppose those things.

So in short, if you are pro-fascist you hate schumer a little, if you are anti-fascist you hate schumer a lot... but at the end of the day, no one likes him, except for maybe the people that support his role as the person hired to lose.

He will be largely forgotten by the history books, a minor side character that 99.99% of people will never learn about.

[–] supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 8 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (3 children)

No, unfortunately for him and his family, I do not think he will be forgotten at all. People will remember who was in power who could have stopped this, they will burn it into their memories like a brand so they never forget. I know I already have.

[–] Deceptichum@quokk.au 10 points 3 days ago (2 children)

And those people will die in a few more decades, and he will be forgotten. Regulated to the most obscure history books

Even kids today know jack shit about 9/11, nor do they care. You would be hard pressed to find anyone who could name the minority leadership under Bush Jr and who supported the AUMF or Patriot Act.

History will forget Schumer, Trump will take up most of all anyone ever learns of this era.

[–] supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 5 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (4 children)

I disagree, no generation will be able to do more damage to the earth than the Boomer generation, this period of time will be remembered and talked about in stories, history and parables for hundreds if not thousands of years. The damage is that acute that is being locked in right now, so no, I think people will be VERY interested in the villains, especially the "quiet" ones from this period, in the same way people are interested in the ways in which the Roman Empire could have avoided collapse to some degree but did not.

Trump is in many ways a boring character, he is easy to diagnose, he telegraphs his intentions with everything he does and projects every internal insecurity he has on to his enemies. There is nothing to discover, nothing creative to Trump's bigotry and fascism. There are no cliffhangers to the story of Trump, no interesting twists or turns, it is all just a base reduction, a cynical exclusion of all else but a worship of might makes right and narcissism.

People will be far more interested in the ways in which the DNC and Democratic Leadership made the catastrophe of fascism inevitable in their failures to meet the reality of the moment or pass even marginal reforms to improve the quality of life of people in the US.

There is little to learn peering into a figure like Trump, but Biden, Schumer, Jeffries.... Nancy Pelosi... those characters are much more historically relevant because they occupied positions that could have ostensibly headed off the descent to fascism in a way that would have been massively popular with the general public, the question of why they didn't is far more fruitful for historians than why did Trump start another dumb as fuck war.

Chuck loves operation AIPAC fury.

[–] Tronn4@lemmy.world 17 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Nah he did what Isreal paid him to do. To ignore America and do what they want

[–] nandeEbisu@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

He's not even doing it for the pay anymore. He's so far into it, if he stopped he would to actually acknowledge that he was bought and paid for by a foreign government to betray the interests of his voters and fellow citizens.

[–] Wammityblam@lemmy.world 46 points 3 days ago (6 children)

All these dusty old white men and women need to go.

These people have absolutely nothing in common with the average American. We desperately need young blood in the game.

Age and term limits for all positions in government.

He should be deported to the state he represents. Israel.

He should be lowered into Palestine like that cow in Jurassic Park.

[–] favoredponcho@lemmy.zip 21 points 3 days ago

Chuck thinks his job is to make sure democrats keep supporting Israel. Thats verbatim what he thinks his job is.

[–] PointyFluff@lemmy.ml 15 points 3 days ago

He's Israel's best US senator

[–] ApeNo1@lemmy.world 19 points 3 days ago (2 children)

It’s time to chuck Schumer.

[–] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Thanks dude, came way too far to see someone else say this. Surprised it hasn't been a NYPost article title already. It's a rag, but they certainly can use clever wordplay in the titles.

[–] CptOblivius@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago

Chuck Schumer! That was a complete sentence.

[–] TemplaerDude@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago

Trumps entire presidency has been all the fucking proof anyone should need. He’s done everything he can to enable a fascist take over. He’s offered nothing. He’s an incompetent fuck who should be shipped off to the funny farm.

[–] xxce2AAb@feddit.dk 20 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Amongst other things, yes.

Man I really don't understand Jacobin anymore...

Gassing up Jeffries while pretending Schumer is the norm for the Dem Senate?

Jacobin should be ringing bells louder than anyone that these two are lame ducks who don't represent the DNC, the voters, or even Dem members of Congress.

They've been lame ducks for over a year, and in less than a year congress votes on new leaders. And no matter what happens between now and then, they won't be the best choices and they won't win.

The only reason they're in leadership right now, is those elections were a week before the DNC chair election, so neoliberal threats still carried weight. They don't anymore.

And it's hard to believe Jacobin can't understand any of that.

Quick edit:

And that's not even getting into all the prior ways we've been shown it's time for Schumer to go

Literally anything in the past 14 months showed multiple times, that he is part of the problem.

[–] daannii@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Pretty sure his approval of the big beautiful butt fuck bill was pretty strong evidence.
