This feels wrong posting this here, but I could not find a sub to do this in, so feel free to point me in the right direction.

My dad is an Old Spice Guy, I am an Old Spice Guy, but I am done with P&G and what I think is poisonous and wasteful products.

I am looking for recommendations for organic safe healthy body washes, lotions for dry dark skin and deodorants. I've not had to look for anything other brands for over 25 years, so this feels overwhelming. I just tried Native, and that won't work, so, please, any directions to point me to?

Thanks.

CeraVe is the only skin-care company afaik whose products are developed by dermatologists, and are consistently highly rated by dermatologists. They have good scentless moisturizers, lotions with sunscreen, retinol, shampoos, conditioners.

I'm sure the make fantastic products and my brother in law swears by this, but somehow it's never felt right for me. I should take the bias out and try this some day. Thanks.

I also really liked CeraVe products, but recently found out they are on the Boycott-Divest-Sanction list for Israel-supporting companies, if that matters to your political views.

Not sure if they're everywhere, but around here you just go to the local farmer's market and find the old hippy who makes soap. You buy the soaps you enjoy the smell of and use those. Basic ingredients that are much nicer on your skin, and usually last longer.

Bar soap works well for lather with shaving if you don't use an electric raiser as well.

Haven't found a good deoderant yet, all the ones that are better for the skin don't seem to work well. At least, every person who's told me about their healthier deodorant has smelled of bo.

Also, soap and shampoo bars are the way to go instead of liquid versions - less plastic waste.

If you're concerned with dry/sensitive skin, try to find ones without SLS (Sodium lauryl sulphate), it's a foaming agent used in loads of soap products, but it's actually an irritant.

SLS is an irritant in that soap is an irritant and SLS is a strong soap. Scrub your hands with almost any soap excessively and see if they get irritated. People use too much gd shampoo

IIRC some countries allow the low-grade stuff with dioxins (????? I forget) to be used at the manufacturer's discretion, which really can't be good

Weirdly, I stopped shaving for the last 2 months to see if my beard will finally grow. Its working.

That being said, yeah, Native Deo was ok, but did not last. I am concerned about BO, so yeah, this will take some doing.

Not quite close to a Farmers Market, but I need to actually look through. I did however see bars of soap from Australia in Goodwill, but those seemed sketchy.

Growing the beard is definitely the easiest option, but then you have to start looking into beard oils to help it stay nice if you grow it long. Keeping it full but not too long is the happy medium that works well.

That's a tough one though, without a local farmer's market it can be harder. Next best option is find a commercially made soap with the fewest ingredients and use that, it will be an improvement.

Good luck!

I appreciate this and thank you for your solid advice.

A good trick is to try samples. A lot of brands or retailers will do sample packs. The Razor Co has a dedicated sample section. https://www.therazorcompany.com/collections/samples

Also call Merz and ask them. They’re super knowledgeable. https://www.merzapothecary.com/

Nice. These look interesting. I do samples all the time, for colognes, but did not know about the ones you shared. Thanks.

Recently switched to Harry’s. I like the body wash. No complaints.

[–] Blackfeathr@lemmy.world 5 points 20 hours ago

+1 for Harry's, I like it a lot too.

Looks good. How do you feel about the ingredients? I've become very conscious lately.

Nice. Thanks.

Someone I know who works outside and with chemicals lines the charcoal lime body wash.

There’s these sort of crystal things you can use instead of deodorant. You rub them on your pits when they wet and they don’t produce any smell but block the bad ones. I used one for a while, it was good.
