Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

But they're owned by the far right.

[–] Protoknuckles@lemmy.world 21 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Yeah, isn't politico owned by a Trump ally?

It's pedos all the way up

[–] HaiZhung@feddit.org 8 points 4 days ago

Not all of them. The german public broadcasting companies are supposed to be „neutral“ and are state funded. And they are normalizing this shit too.

I think it’s especially the traditional media that carries some trust that breaks the camel‘s back: we know that the tabloid press shits out one inflammatory headline after another; but when the „serious“ media picks it up, that’s when these opinions become mainstream.

That ship sailed so long ago it had elves on it when it left

[–] null@lemmy.org 6 points 5 days ago

It's got orcs now.

[–] CPMSP@midwest.social 4 points 5 days ago

If it weren't so grim this would be hilarious.

[–] theunknownmuncher@lemmy.world 28 points 5 days ago

They literally are the far right

[–] Ooops@feddit.org 22 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

An Axel Springer SE publication advocating to not normalise the far right has to be satire...

(Can't comment on details because my sanity demands that every single part of that giant stinking pile of steaming right-wing shit gets blocked by my Ad, Spam and Trash filter. My personal recommendation: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/autinerd/anti-axelspringer-hosts/master/axelspringer-hosts helps your mental health.)

The Jacobin, New International, are better sources anyways. Thanks for the filter btw!

Is it an idea to put it on Codeberg instead of Github?

In addition: People need to punch right-wingers (aka Nazis) in the face.

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 5 points 4 days ago

Why would they criticize their pay masters?

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 5 points 4 days ago

they have been sanewashing the far right. I dont if they do as much copaganda/military propaganda shows like with the US, to reinforce the hierarchy of being far right, is RIGHT way.

[–] tangentism@beehaw.org 3 points 4 days ago

The media that's owned by far right paedo billionaires?

This is typical deluded liberal thinking of "but why won't they play fair??!!"

[–] D1re_W0lf@piefed.social 6 points 5 days ago

It takes one to know one, I guess.

[–] gajustempus@feddit.org 3 points 4 days ago

interesting article - considering it's from a Springer SE outlet (which is, by far, a right-wing media company on its own).

[–] massacre@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago (2 children)

From Politico of all things. And what media? The only mainstreem media left is NBC and ABC and both are heavily corporate (Comcast/Disney).

[–] geissi@feddit.org 7 points 4 days ago

The only mainstreem media left is NBC and ABC

I don't think US media are the primary focus of this article by politico.eu, talking about European politics "from Reform UK and France’s National Rally to Brothers of Italy and Alternative for Germany".

That said, yes it's quite ironic that this is published by politico when their owner Axel Springer SE is one of the main culprits.

[–] birdwing@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 4 days ago

Does it matter if it's mainstream? We should use media that are worker-owned and not corporate, they will be much more likely to provide actual criticism, methinks.

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

They won’t

[–] CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 5 days ago

The Irony.

Fuck Politico, Axel Springer and Döpfner. Don't share, don't click.

Presenting everything that's happening as somehow normal — even while sensationalizing it — is what the mass media do. I don't mean it's a conspiracy, it's just that's all they know how to do.

[–] IronBird@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

especially after gutting their own internal reporters/journalists, to save $ all US mainstream media does now is pull shit from social media and spin/sanitize it for the handful of boomers still watching their networks

[–] frisbird@lemmy.ml 2 points 5 days ago

Yes, they must! It's an imperative! And we'll continue to write opeds about it until they realize they must!
