Chat is a text only community for casual conversation, please keep shitposting to the absolute minimum. This is intended to be a separate space from c/chapotraphouse or the daily megathread. Chat does this by being a long-form community where topics will remain from day to day unlike the megathread, and it is distinct from c/chapotraphouse in that we ask you to engage in this community in a genuine way. Please keep shitposting, bits, and irony to a minimum.

As with all communities posts need to abide by the code of conduct, additionally moderators will remove any posts or comments deemed to be inappropriate.

Thank you and happy chatting!

Fedposting specifically refers to the idea of a "fed" or federal agent (CIA, FBI etc) posting something that encourages the community into discussing open acts of violence and actionable threats against the state. The goal is basically entrapment, get the leftist organisation to be more openly radical and violent, so the government has an excuse to arrest them (or in this case, shut down their website). It stems from the methods the feds would use to infiltrate and destroy leftist groups throughout the cold war (and continuing to this day), just moved into online spaces.

A leftist discord or website that openly talks about committing acts of violence against the state can be shut down by the authorities, and deprive leftists of the ability to talk to each other and organise and share information and resources. So "feds" will try to infiltrate these sites and encourage more violent rhetoric so they can be shut down before they become a threat. The rate at which this actually happens isn't really clear, but it probably isn't very high, it's usually more a joke than anything else, but something to be mindful of, it probably wouldn't be a problem, but we do know that the US government does monitor this website (they've literally put reports out about Hexbear and Lemmygrad) so we shouldn't give them an excuse to shut down the site or arrest one of our members under false pretenses.

So the "no fedposting" rule basically means "don't post anything that could get the site shut down for "inciting violence" or anything that would put other users at risk" like a federal agent trying to infiltrate and destroy the site might try to do. It's not that we are paranoid and think every other user is secretly a CIA agent (I asked around the office and I'm the only guy assigned to the Hexbear task force), it's just a precaution to avoid breaking any rules that could result in the site being shut down and is mostly a joke, but also helps keep conversation more focused.

It can feel a little frustrating sometimes, we want to share successes with our online friends, but even saying something like "I was at this specific protest on the weekend" and if the cops are trying to arrest people who were at that protest, it obviously isn't a smart idea to talk about something that would get people(or yourself) arrested. It's a part of OPSEC, operational security, making sure that nothing on this forum could lead to the real life arrest of people on it.

Hope you don't mind the slightly too long explanation, but it sort of got away from me a bit there.

I, too wondered this. I believe it means, "any sort of posting that would invite attention from the feds"

So basically any praxis that isn't the libbiest, most non-violent organizing

It can be that or it can be agent provocateur posting - like "hey fellow leftists, who wants to saw the barrel down on my shotgun for me?"

[–] Transform2942@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 month ago

"who wants to be my next promotion?"
