For so many years, russians have been portrayed as tough in Hollywood films and video games, but it should have been Ukrainians all along. In the USSR, all but the people at the top were oppressed or restricted in some way, but at least russians were not viewed as second-class (unless they were Jewish, among other things). Meanwhile the people of Ukraine (and those of other Soviet republics) had to deal not only with the Nazis but also with the Soviets, both of whom viewed them as inherently inferior.

From what I have understood, Russia has generally stolen a lot of Ukraine’s history and culture and passed it off as theirs. The word Rus refers to the vikings who actually founded Kyiv and whom many Ukrainians descend from. Even their names are Slavic versions of Norse names, which I didn’t know until relatively recently.

[–] Rose@lemmy.zip 3 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah, even recently, Russia has removed or minimized references to Kyivan Rus in school books.

It is absolutely crazy what goes on over there. I am not an expert on the subject, but have seen, heard and read enough to understand how absolutely unhinged that country is right now. Most reasonable Russians who could afford it have left a long time ago and those who are still there have to witness their children’s education being turned into a brainwashing camp that will turn their kids into canon fodder the moment they come of age. It is so fucked, man.

Soviets did make a habit of crediting any achievements of any people within the USSR to the generalized "soviet" people, which, by default, meant russians. Not that there weren't smart scientists and resilient warriors that were actually russian (gotta acknowledge the truth), but a lot of positive things people usually associate with Soviets were achieved by what was ethnic minorities at the time.

If there's one thing I know, it's never to mess with mother nature, mother in-laws and, mother freaking Ukrainians.

While true, we don't need to be reminded that THAT Italian Job movie exists.

No more shaheeds from Iran, no starlink, no tanks, no oil. I suspect Russia is going to loose lots of territory this year

[–] Kekzkrieger@feddit.org 1 points 2 minutes ago

One can only hope that Putler is forced to stop somehow.

[–] supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 11 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Also potentially no more air interceptors for Ukraine however...

[–] n3m37h@sh.itjust.works 5 points 14 hours ago (2 children)

Im sure ukraine will find another source. Someone wants to make $£€

[–] Mika@piefed.ca 2 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

There is no other source of PAC3. You can down everything but ballistics without it. SAMP/T has worse stats vs ballistics as of now, although all the data is captured and improvements are on the way.

[–] n3m37h@sh.itjust.works 1 points 11 hours ago

because only an iraninan company has the ability to make these interceptor drones....

[–] supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 4 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago) (1 children)

Yeah I am hopeful too, just frustrated at how predictable my shit president is.

[–] n3m37h@sh.itjust.works 5 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

people in america need to stop working and all go to the capitol. Epsteinds best friends needs to be thrown in the smallest coldest brightest cell imaginable forbthe rest of his miserable life with nothing but a bucket to shit and piss in, same with everyone involved with the coverup.

[–] Brainsploosh@lemmy.world 6 points 14 hours ago

Epstein didn't kill himself, maybe we should make getting Epstein'd a verb?

[–] gigachad@piefed.social 1 points 13 hours ago

Aren't they able to produce shaed-like drones in Russia in the meantime? Of course hoping they indeed do lose lots of territory

[–] Skiluros@sh.itjust.works 10 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

This was by far the roughest winter so far.

[–] supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 7 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

Yes, it pisses me off endlessly my country has repeatedly refused to actually move the needle on this war, it has subjected Ukraine to a general human rights crisis this winter and yet my government still condescends Ukraine.

I want to emphasize something though, this was the hardest winter by far in large part because russia has begun to resort more and more to straight up unambiguous terrorism against the Ukrainian civilian population.

You HAVE to remember to ask why they are doing so, and the answer as it always is with those who resort to acts of terrorism is because they are too weak to fight a traditional war. Russia is using guerilla warfare tactics (in an utterly unethical way) while still trying to convince everyone it is capable of fighting a traditional war.

This isn't to minimize anything here, I am pointing out why the dynamic has changed and what that indicates, not minimizing how incredibly difficult this all is.

[–] username_1@programming.dev 3 points 15 hours ago (3 children)

No, we didn't yet. We have many winters ahead. And summer doesn't magically solve most of the problems. Shit is shit. Now it is just warmer, softer and smellier while a week ago it was cold and stone hard. Not quite an improvement.

[–] rockerface@lemmy.cafe 8 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Being warmer makes a lot of difference when most of our power generation had to be used just to not freeze to death.

[–] username_1@programming.dev 0 points 13 hours ago

Of course. But heat is just a one of many problems. Other problems are still here and not going anywhere. President's wording is disgustingly overly hurray-tier optimistic. I would expect such phrasing from a Berliner of Londoner. Not from somebody who spends most of the time in Ukraine.

[–] supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 7 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago) (1 children)

What are you talking about? Russia fought clear through the winter, exhausting their forces, destroying their morale and grinding down the last few veterans the russian military had to indicate to all the sorry lot with barely any supplies or even weapons how to fight a war.... No, the spring is approaching like a tidal wave for russia, they must reach some kind of ceasefire or temporary peace deal before summer opens up the possibility for decisive Ukrainian counter attack.

Spring coming is BAD NEWS for russia, I don't care if the russians don't even believe that yet, that is the reality. Ukraine has more armor, more veteran healthy troops, better more solid morale, more cohesion, less brutal fatigue on its servicemembers from not forcing them on a grinding offensive straight through winter...

Ukraine has PILES of artillery now, which it never has going into spring in this war, that ALONE makes an astronomically large difference in terms of holding the bulwark against russian assaults and decisively counter attacking. Ukraine will also be getting the KF41 as well as other armored vehicles and 99% of russia's armor is nearly obsolete compared to those vehicles.

No, I don't agree with you at all, this is VERY different, this is a turning point in the war and there is no debating it if you actually look at the raw supplies/logistics inputs and macro indicators of this conflict.

[–] username_1@programming.dev 1 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Winter. And how we "made it through".

[–] supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 4 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago) (1 children)

Yes and now russia will be smashed in the face by armored counter attack unless they figure out a way to get Ukraine to agree to pause hostilities so they can regroup and stabilize the mess that is the russian frontlines before spring and summer make rapid, mass attacks far easier.

If I were Ukraine I would not agree to any terms until spring was close enough to see the fear in the russia's eyes. If that doesn't happen, then so be it, crush them. As this war continues it will only get worse for russia, and it won't do so smoothly and slowly...

Putin put all his eggs in the "negotiate a pause hostilities before spring by getting Trump and cronies to bully Ukraine into a shit deal" basket.

[–] username_1@programming.dev -2 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Stop writing that nonsense. You're not Ukraine. You never been to Ukraine. You know nothing about Ukraine, its past or future. That hurray-bullshit of yours is disgusting to read. Leave writing such things to people who have some basic idea what is going on.

[–] supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 3 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Then back up your claims about this not being an accurate read of the war :)

[–] username_1@programming.dev -1 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

It is a Russel's kettle full of hurray-slop. Nothing even to discuss.

[–] supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 6 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago)

Your opinions are.. or? I am confused

Nothing I have said is out of line with any of the articles and assessments I have posted about the war, I am simply pointing to the reality and telling it how it is, the idea that russia is going to roar into a summer offensive like it has in past springs just isn't supported by evidence.

Meanwhile I have provided specific examples of things that I think have meaningfully, substantially reversed the tide of the war, where are the specifics of your argument other than "How dare you!?"....?

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 1 points 10 hours ago

Throughout the war, there's been a lull in combat operations in both sides during the roughest winter months. There has also been a major offensive operation every spring, by one side or the other.

Currently the circumstances favor Ukraine taking the initiative this spring.

Not quite an improvement.

You've apparently never had to defend a frontline in freezing temperatures, using metal equipment...
