Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

MODERATORS

Clearly the whole drama with Pentagon making a big deal of showing that they're trying to force AI companies to build autonomous AI killing machines and spy on citizens is completely manufactured.

Anthropic was always going to comply, and the goal is to just create a marketing campaign them as heroically resisting. All the media has been running the story of a plucky Anthropic defying US military to defend ethical AI and protect humanity.

It would be so funny if America takes the L in Iran and it directly leads to the AI bubble popping

[–] DogThatWentGorp@hexbear.net 19 points 20 hours ago

Deciding to attack Iran outright like in a paradox game feels AI-inspired enough.

Incidentally, energy prices are almost certainly going to go up now that Strait of Hormuz is closed. So all the data centers are going to be a lot more costly to operate all of a sudden.

It doesn't seem closed. IRGC need to get a little more forceful with the warning.

I think it's closed? Almost all the ships in the strait right now are Iranian. I see one Russian and one Chinese as well

[–] SickSemper@hexbear.net 14 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

There are other flags in the strait, but either way, there has been no official announcement of the closure, just a warning

“The official, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said Iran had not formally confirmed any such order.”

fair, I guess we'll see what happens in the next few days

Well would you look at that!

Omani Maritime Security Center: An oil tanker flying the Palau flag was targeted about 5 nautical miles off Mussandam in Oman.

American government still not over Millenium Challenge 2002 loss.

[–] tactical_trans_karen@hexbear.net 9 points 22 hours ago

That'd be awesome. Like, does it actually serve a tactical purpose where can it game out anything other than rigged tactical simulations and Sun Tzu? doubt

If I've learned anything from hearing of these AI pushing tech bros speak its that they are all soulless demons that really don't care much for humanity. So when Anthropic's CEO came out against it being used by the military to autonomously kill people I knew to take that with a grain of salt. And well, it didn't take long for them to show their hand.

The amount of chuckleheads blithering about 'drop chatgbt and use clob instead' is fucking disturbing.

Really? Not a fart's worth of critical thought.

[–] Ram_The_Manparts@hexbear.net 3 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

What is the going rate for a fart these days anyway?

[–] microfiche@hexbear.net 2 points 13 hours ago

In this economy?

[–] iByteABit@hexbear.net 6 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Is there an non paywalled way I can see this?

[–] yogthos@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 14 hours ago

looks like hard paywall and archive can't read it either
