Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei is meeting with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth today, as the Pentagon threatens the AI company with what could amount to a government blacklist.

At issue is the guardrails Anthropic placed on its AI models. The Pentagon, which has a $200 million contract with Anthropic, wants the company to lift its restrictions for the military to be able to use the model for “all lawful use,” according to a source familiar with the discussions.

But Anthropic has concerns over two issues that it isn’t willing to drop, the source said: AI-controlled weapons and mass domestic surveillance of American citizens. According to a source familiar, Anthropic believes AI is not reliable enough to operate weapons and no laws or regulations yet that cover how AI could be used in mass surveillance.

If people would instead use the term "Text generator" instead of "AI", boomers like Hegseth would understand that the military is not its use case

Anthropic's artificial-intelligence model Claude was used in the U.S. military's operation to capture former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter. Claude's deployment came via Anthropic's partnership with data firm Palantir Technologies (PLTR.O) -WSJ via Reuters

Someone at Anthropic apparently saw that story, asked how Claude was used, and the Pentagon got cagey.

"Text generator to"

  • Identify the next target to attack

  • Justify the latest military operation to the press

  • Induce a panic in Congress to get the Pentagon more money

  • Lie about how the latest military engagement is going

Seems to fulfill all the basic responsibilities of a modern Secretary of ~~Defense~~ Offense. Why do we even need Hegseth at all? Hell, why do we need the Joint Chiefs? Just direct all future queries to the GenAI.mil platform. We can scrape every bureaucrat over the rank of Major with this thing.

Kinda crazy how the US gov't has all this money for surveillance but not enough to pay interest on its debt.

Isn't Pete Hegseth the guy who gets drunk and invites journalists to secret military chats?

If the fascists don't like it, Anthropic must be doing something right.

Though you can never tell for sure with CEOs, Dario Amodei has shown dangerous signs of being ethical, at least with not overselling LLM capabilities and with giving serious thought to downstream risks. On the input side, honoring copyright and not abusing fair use: maybe not so much.

Aaaaaaaaand it's gone: https://lite.cnn.com/2026/02/25/tech/anthropic-safety-policy-change
Now they are just like any other AI corporation.

Whenever the Pentagon catches even the slightest whiff of a conscience among its contractors they move immediately to snuff it out.

Anyone else have “SkyNet released” on their 2026 bingo card?

[–] tlekiteki@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I have to doubt they will use it, regardless of any concerns.

[–] PancakesCantKillMe@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I imagine you meant to say “no doubt” they will use it. Because I have none.

[–] mrbeano@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago

That's how I read it. They are already using it, but want absolutely no guardrails or ethical interference.

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Anthropic believes AI is not reliable enough to operate weapons

Three possible outcomes:

  1. Anthropic drop their pretense of caring in exchange for further blood money
  2. Kegseth gives them an extension in exchange for an obvious bribe
  3. Both.

I'm thinking it's probably 3.
