The French foreign ministry says US envoy Charles Kushner should be blocked from access to the government, after he failed to explain comments about an alleged "rise" of violence in France.

Kushner, father of Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, had been summoned to meet French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot on Monday evening, but he did not attend.

Instead, he said he had a prior engagement and sent a deputy from the US embassy.

This prompted an angry response from the ministry, which accused Kushner of an "apparent failure to grasp the basic requirements of the ambassadorial mission" and said Barrot had requested Kushner "no longer be allowed direct access" to government ministers.

Shouldn't it be people like ex sec-state Hillary Clinton (D) or Condolezza Rice (R)?

In Australia, it's usually ex ministers that are given ambassador roles - people who already know the ins and outs of Australian government, have served the Australian government and probably have networks overseas they can call favors from to assist/better the nation.

Should it? Yes. Would I be any happier with either of those two you listed? Only marginally. Considering the significance of the French relationship with the United States (probably second only to England in terms of importance/loyalty of alliance) I would much rather the ambassador be someone like Karine Jean-Pierre. Born in France and worked as the White House Press Secretary for 3 years. Her political affiliation is independent. And it shouldn't matter but she's an openly LGBTQ black woman and unfortunately diversity is lacking at the moment. So she's experienced in public communication and she has a Master's degree from Columbia University in Public Administration.

charles kushner was pardoned by trumps first term, at the insistence of jared his son, and also hatred for the lawyer who prosecuted him.

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 23 points 1 day ago

US can't complain either, they had a big cry about the Australian ambassador to the US not being someone they liked.
