Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

I'm guessing they lowered the price between me adding it to my watchlist and me seeing the offer, but it still made me chuckle

The extra fiver on the offer is because it says Linux

why so cheap? Forparts or something?

[–] Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone 21 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Old, low end, and also the touch screen isn't working on it.

The seller has one with a working touchscreen for about $100USD more, but I'm gonna hold off for now on buying it. (My car turned on the "hungry for money" light this morning and it's saying "P0420 not blazing bro")

[–] seathru@quokk.au 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

If P0420 is the only code, and it's not causing drive-ability issues, let that light shine!

[–] Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 1 day ago

That's typically what I do, until it gets annoying (ain't my first P0420 code lol)

This one though I'm probably gonna fix once it stops raining sideways here

not a bad deal even at $100 for Quad Core i5 supporting Win 11 and 265GB SSD

It's old and low end

[–] fuckwit_mcbumcrumble@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It’s an almost 10 year old laptop. Low spec business machines like that tend to cost like $200 after about 5 years but they kinda bottom out around there. Usually takes something wrong with them to drop below $100 but op said it’s kinda broken. But a fully working one might not be much more if it’s not at all desirable of a machine.

In my country, new machines with around those specs are sold and cost around the equivalent of 400+ usd :(

In the US, quick look for bad deals on amazon and I found 8GB ram, 256GB storage i3-1115G4 for $373 new. Should be about the same or a little worse than this one. But above that in the listings is essentially the same machine for $280.

Looking for good deals, I found a 'renewed' 16GB RAM, 512GB storage i5-1245U on Amazon for $260, or same specs used on Ebay for $200. Has a pretty decent iGPU as well, for the time. New was $400 or greater though even on the 8/256GB machines with that CPU. For something that isn't a laptop, used BC-250s in the US are at about $160, still a great deal even though back in November they were about $95.

I'd say in the US there's no reason to get a low end laptop new, the pricing gets much more sane in the midrange usually. And also that you can find some pretty terrible hardware still being sold as new on Amazon. But there are good deals here, even if they take a bit of looking sometimes. Which may be different from the country you're in, idk. sorry for the ramble, I just enjoy looking for good value hardware lol

New low end laptops haven't really made sense for about 10 years. When a nicely mid range but 2-3 year old business pc is the same price as a new one and all you need to do is be tech savvy enough to reload the OS. Or pay a $100-200 premium to have the manufacturer do that for you.

Shipping costs could be lower also

[–] Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 day ago

Upon looking closer the shipping cost is the same (The 2 models they have that I mentioned elsewhere in this thread are only different by ~$0.50 in terms of shipping)

With this seller though they offer local pickup so I typically do that with them so not only do I save on shipping, I get some much needed exercise lol

I've bought a lot of stuff from them over the years, they're great

[–] batterystapled@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago

Then they should mention that.
