Could just be a consequence of a less ideologically diverse user base to start with.
Iβm so upset about (privacy, reddit, corporatism, etc, etc) that Iβm prepared to leave my large online social networks for a smaller space on principal is probably a bit of an outlier position to take.
Not that itβs wrong, but itβs probably something we all agree on. Something out there is so fucked up we refuse to be a part of it on principal, even if we donβt fully agree on what that is.
Pretty much this. We have strong beliefs. Strong enough to leave a popular, functional platform for ideological reasons.
I left for user interface reasons, actually. That's why I'm still on lemmy and not piefed.
I left because all of my accounts were banned for criticizing the government π€·. I like it here more though. Smaller community makes it easier to be part of the conversation.

People who only see one aspect of someone's identity often think everyone with that identity is the same.
It's a cognitive bias. I assure you. I converse with people on here all the time with different opinions even though we might both mostly share the same ball-park ideology.
It's everywhere. They brought it from their previous home.
But, one aspect...
Mods banning anyone who does not chirp their party line [and deletes any posts/comments offering different perspectives], creates echo chambers and confirmation biases that recursively self re-affirm, drilling deeper into groupthink, mass formation, and totalitarianised psyche.
It didn't start here. And it won't end here.
Because you wrote this I too agree in heard mentality.
Actually letβs agree to disagree. Lemmy is a niche social media platform. By its very nature attracts a particular set of people. Those who like to self host those who care about privacy. A lot of college educated people. So itβs not insane to reason many of these people will have similar beliefs or political leanings.
This is further reinforced with what Lemmy is all about, topics for like minded people.
Does that capture everyone ? No ! Of course not. You still will find people who disagree all over the fediverse.
Humans by modern nature do their best to put themselves in a box. Donβt know why β¦

Marriage is only for women, everyone knows that.
While we are gaining people who're seeking refugee from the claustrophobic-like suffocation that is the surface web of social media. We're taking some on the chin with knowing that some of those 'refugees' are assholes who probably have been a prick elsewhere. They just don't care about owning to the problem.
You walk into a place with a big sign that says nude strip club. When you go in if you see nude people you can't be outraged. You knew exactly what type of place you were walking into.
Lemmy like most all social media is overwhelmingly used by YOUNG people. A majority of young people think a like. Nothing new there.
If you go to a social media platform and are annoyed at the opinions of young people, then leave.
The reason here seems to be that the left-right axis is a good-evil axis, so they're trying to find the furthest left position on the spectrum they can occupy. As a result, everyone has the exact same beliefs and holds them with a smug sense of either moral or intellectual superiority.
It isn't so much herd mentality as it is they've given themselves very little ideological wiggle-room to work with as a community.
