IMO, 3 out of 6 STSA episodes have been at least pretty good, which is not bad for a first season of a Star Trek series. Two of the not good ones were pretty damn bad for lazy writing reasons, but I hate to criticize the show because of the chorus of lazy criticism coming from the usual suspects.

It really is, it feels like they do understand what Trek is supposed to be and are trying to course correct back to it from the place that some recent Trek shows have taken things.

I've been enjoying it for the most part. I think since it is about the academy, it has a lot of room to explore the themes of ST in some interesting ways. It reminds me a bit of Prodigy in some ways, trying to build on existing lore and build up the far-future Trek timeframe while solidly embracing the core principles. I'm curious to see where they take the current big bad arc (Paul Giamatti).
It does feel a lot like live action Prodigy sometimes (positive).
