There are many more and you can freely choose your provider. And when it does something you don't agree with - enshittifying - just move to another provider. Federation: Keep your contacts, not your provider.

Seems to me like a naive reception of the criticisms brought up.
It is genuinely confusing for, admittedly uninformed, users who might want to switch over to decide between the options. There is no guidance, no online consensus, no indicator, what is slop, what maintained etc..
And not addressing decision fatigue rampant in (specifically this) FOSS space is IMO a major factor in holding back its adoption.

Exactly. Which is why I think the federated (and very similarly named) Fluux will have much more success than this.
I'm not going to create another account on two, three or a dozen server if I already have a federated account I can use anywhere.
It's self hosted which is good enough. I'll just ignore the cloud version and host an instance for me and my buddies.

For me discord was never a suitable alternative to community forums. It successfully made itself one though but for my use case voice chat with my friends is all I need. I'm only on one server on discord, but I connect to multiple ts3 servers.
Mumble literally still works. The last 20 years of UI design were a mistake, we must return to tradition!
Unfortunately Mumble doesn't allow for group video calls or screensharing. Personally I'd recommend Movim for people who require those additional features.
Really cool project. Unfortunately, in this day and age, not having a desktop and mobile app is really hard to sell. PWAs are just not the same.
Also, curious: hie compatible is this actually with the rest of the XMPP ecosystem? From the architecture description, movin sits between its frontend and an xmpp server. But if another user connects to that same xmpp server from a non-movin client, how mich are they able to see and do?
I'm generally only recommending Movim since it being a PWA allows it to be a one-stop-shop that functions well enough across any device universally, reducing complexity for the average user (which is critically important when on-boarding).
However, there are native applications that could be used instead, such as the desktop app Dino, which is compatible with Movim's group video calls. Unfortunately it is not yet able to screenshare.
The native Mobile apps tend to be lagging behind with group call support. Conversations/Cheogram/Monocles can all do 1-to-1 audio and video calls, but cannot screenshare or join group calls yet.
Text chat and file/image sharing is 100% compatible across all clients.
If Movim is able to attract enough Discord refugees, and thus increase funding (it currently receives $43 a month from patreon, plus small grants from foundations like NLnet), it would likely be able to create a native version of the app for desktop/mobile.

I’ve just personally never liked them, and I suspect I’m not alone in this.
I'm with you on that, but I've been willing to look past it since it checks every other box I have.
Monocles also does what Movim does, but with a native app on the phone.
You have personally used the monocles app from F-droid to have group video calls and screensharing?
AFAIK Monocles also hosts a Movim instance, which is separate from their mobile app (The mobile app is a fork of Conversations with some additions from Cheogram and Blabber).
Are you sure you are not confusing the two? I ask because I can't find any mention of that ability to perform group calls on the Monocles website, nor on their Codeberg.
Conversations, which the Monocles mobile app is based on, still cannot perform group calls or group video calls as of 3 months ago, so I'd be a little surprised if Monocles independently added that ability without upstreaming it to Conversations.
The problem is to move the users over. People aren't willing to change

Fluxer really looks great. Might be the greatest alternative to discord, made in EU. But fluxer is tired these days. Too much traffic..
Why not Stoat? Main dev is in the UK so unfortunately not in the EU, but it's been around a lot longer than most of these alternatives, and seems to be the main one i hear about
Stoat doesn't have the ball as rolling.
It's still up to stoat and fluxer to show they can deliver and attract discord users

Why not something federated like https://mov.im/ instead of something that ties you to a single provider you cannot leave when it pulls off stupid stuff?
I've been recommending Movim myself, actually. I also see it as the best option, currently.
It looks very nice, but unfortunately it'll likely not really reach mass-appeal just due to no proper mobile app (yet).
Personally I'll definitely look into moving over with the communities I really enjoy using - but the masses will not move in my experience. You can see with how reddit still exists.
From first glance this looks much better than Stoat as an alternative.
