I hadn't heard of this YouTuber until now, but he went into some good depth on what's going on with Discord with the age verification rollout news.

He covers:

  • Discord's previous data breach where government IDs were stolen
  • Other companies with age verification and similar promises yet have had customer data stolen.
  • Discord's preparation to go public with an IPO.
  • How Discord's co-founder stepped aside in 2025 and a former vice-chairman of Activision/Blizzard took over as CEO.

Only if you plan on becoming a hermit, because the same law is about to apply to all of the other apps too.

I never used it enough to delete it. I just sorta abandonded it.

I'm getting real tired of being told to delete my only methods of keeping in touch with friends and family. To what extent is someone expected to isolate themselves to the detriment of their own wellbeing to put a marginal dent on the bottom line of a multimillion dollar company?

Unfortunately we've allowed ourselves to use proprietary venture capital built apps, which inevitably will bring with it enshittification that makes continuing to use it against our own interests, but by then the network effect makes it like being caught in a sticky web that's hard to escape.

We can only avoid this from happening again and again by using open-source libre software that allows for self-hosting and federation, just like Lemmy and Piefed, which makes them virtually immune from enshittification.

In this case, we need to migrate our friends and family one last time to something that will let us relax almost permanently for once.

Right now, our best option for a Discord alternative is Movim, which uses XMPP as its back end, an old, open, and proven framework. It has the essentials like group video calls and screensharing (without audio, yet), and is currently working on implementing discord-like channels with rooms.

The Dev has been working on it since 2010, and only receives $48 a month from their patreon. If you'd like to support the development of a truly federated, E2EE discord alternative, I'd highly recommend anyone reading this to consider helping out with a donation, if you can't contribute with coding help.

This is a good point.

Easy for me to ditch Discord when I have other means in use and am already a virtual hermit, anyway. But not everyone is me.

Same. It's a bit silly.

Wow, didn't know the CEO changed. Not to say Discord wasn't already going to shit be before but is that why it's becoming worse at an accelerated pace now?

They want to IPO, so yes
