Official Title of this Community: Ethnic Minorities and People of Color

Why is the title different?

We like to have fun here.

What is this place? A safe space for underrepresented peoples and peoples of color to talk, chill, and vibe.

What are the basic rules of the community?

  1. Follow Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines. Non negotiable. This is the bedrock and mods will make decisions with this always in mind.

  2. This community is for ethnic minorities and people of color. This is a safe space where such people can freely discuss their struggles, insight, and thoughts without fear. If you are not, we respectfully ask you do not post or comment here. A future community will be established to allow for racial discussions with a mixed userbase. However, remember, comments here must still respect Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines.

  3. Irony Racism is still racism. Racism is bad m'kay? We will treat irony racism and bad faith racist satire as racism. Will wield the ban hammer accordingly.

  4. No sectarianism: This is an identity channel not a channel for you all to complain about why XYZ isn't the "one true leftism". Take that to another place.

  5. Stupidpol is not allowed. Stupidpol is class reductionist. We are an identity community. Thinking like stupidpol ignores the struggles of the oppressed, their voices, and their need for unique support. Nothing says oppression more than someone saying that the identity you have is "not real" and that if you only thought like them you'd see what your "real" identity is. Mods reserve the right to ban users and content who promote stupidpol, stupidpol memes, and other class reductionist thinking.

Nelson Mandela Released From Prison (1990)

On this week (11th of February) in 1990, anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela was released from Victor Verster Prison following negotiations with South African President F. W. de Klerk. In 1994, Mandela was elected President, becoming the country's first black head of state.

Mandela, a leading member of the African National Congress (ANC), had been convicted on charges of sabotage at the Rivonia Trial in 1964, and was sentenced to life imprisonment, serving 27 years before his release in 1990.

During his years in prison, Mandela became a major symbol of both the domestic and international anti-apartheid movement. In 1988, hundreds of millions people watched the "Free Nelson Mandela" concert, televised from London's Wembley Stadium.

Following decades of mass internal resistance along with global boycotts and sanctions, newly inaugurated South African State President F.W. de Klerk lifted the state of emergency law, legalized anti-apartheid opposition groups such as the ANC, South African Communist Party, and Pan-Africanist Congress, and released many political prisoners.

Mandela was released on February 11th, 1990 to massive international attention. Driven to Cape Town's City Hall through crowds, Mandela gave a speech where he declared his intention to participate in negotiations, although he noted that the ANC's armed struggle was not yet over before change had taken place.

In 1994, he was elected South Africa's first black president in the country's first ever multiracial election.

"It always seems impossible until it's done."

Perhaps it is a religious or cultural disconnect but I don't understand why so many people seem to have such trouble grasping that what we are witnessing is truly a global battle between good and evil. A profound battle where the future of ~90% of the human species depends on the outcome.

[–] 3rdWorldCommieCat@hexbear.net 2 points 4 hours ago

It's neither cultural or religious imo, the vast majority of the population has been beaten down with capitalism and working their asses off for the good of the elites to the point they have little time off and they'd rather relax than think about even bleaker stuff or revolution in the little free time they have. That and propaganda galore.

[–] la_tasalana_intissari_mata@hexbear.net 10 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

it is Paranoia when the soviets were weary of nazis, of spies, of the capitalists wanting to nuke them.

It is paranoia when a third world leader is weary of colonialism coming back, of imperialists funding terrorist cells and color revolutions.

But it's not paranoia for Americans to unironically think the DPRK will try to invade them, that Russia is "intervening" in their elections.

the term is psycho misanalysis of an enemy who is aware.

This reminded me of a conversation I was having with my mom a couple of years ago where she said something along the lines of being afraid that Cuba, Venezuela, Or Russia may do something to the US. I told her that's ridiculous. But the thing is that the propaganda runs deep.

Even though she spent most of her life in the Dominican Republic, much of the same anti-Communist/Pro-US sentiment is felt from the pressure the US imposed on it. I'm sure its the same in other places, especially in Latin America due to its proximity to the US empire.

Jim Radcliffe saying Britain is being colonized by immigrants and many cosigning him shows a brutal failure of education world wide and complete brainrot. A British talking about being colonized is absolute comedy. Where are the trillions of dollars of wealth being extracted like they did india? The millions of bodies? Nigeria, india etc official language is English did that change for the UK?

No wonder so many fucking Poc cosign white supremacist shit mandem can't even define wtf colonism is i-cant Mfs just use it to mean immigrant moving in that makes white dude feel uncomfortable.

Wickedest ting is rattcliffe himself is a fucking immigrant because he's a billionaire dodging taxes and moved to monaco. All while signing immigrants to play at Manchester. Do me a favor thats-why-im-confused

[–] Rojo27@hexbear.net 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

His non apology was ass too and the news media doesn't really seem to be holding him accountable for it (not that I'd expect them too). All he said was, paraphrasing, "Sorry, I didnt mean to offend some people". So he clearly means what he's said, he just didn't think people would make a big deal out of it.

All billionaire sports club/team owners are fucking parasites sapping the fun out of the game, but there are quite a few who make it publicly clear that they don't think much about the POC they employ and if they could they wouldn't even pay them (looking at you, Jerry Jones).

[–] vegeta1@hexbear.net 2 points 1 day ago

Jerry jones talking about inmates running the asylum thats-why-im-confused

[–] la_tasalana_intissari_mata@hexbear.net 2 points 1 day ago (2 children)

[–] vegeta1@hexbear.net 5 points 1 day ago

Just having a well paying job as non white=colonialism. Taking away jobs from whites or some shit.

[–] vegeta1@hexbear.net 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Then mandem who couldn't build a fucking lego will brag about scientific benefits of colonialism while saying they didn't personally colonize. I swear just nuke media at this point. Only 2 brits on your starting lineup your team being colonized? thats-why-im-confused

My mom all like don't be selling plasma that's giving your life away and like I can't fucking lie at all so she knows cri hits me "what goes around comes around" she used to do work in bars to help her parents out when she was my age with her own dad telling her to stop. I know hers was more dangerous but fuck man I just wanna help and I keep sending applications out and no one's hiring.

I've gotten used to the physical pain and managed the strain but I feel like I'm disappointing her.

[–] Wmill@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago

Was feeling low but getting it out in text has helped me, I did tell her she did it for love of her family and I'm doing the same. One day things will change, my parents feel that they couldn't give me a better life and I feel I can't do the same for them yet. I got hope still

[–] Angel@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

This job I applied and interviewed for like quite a few weeks ago fucking texted me back just making sure they had the right number

And I responded back, "Yeah, that's me."

They still have not responded back after I sent that.

Interestingly enough, this job lied. When I interviewed with them, they told me I was gonna get an answer the day after and now they're texting me about it weeks later? Not only that, but they can't even be prompt and timely in this follow-up.

If they are to give me an offer, it might be some temporary thing worth putting up with as I prepare myself to pass the CNA test, but who knows?

Online discourse is so unproductive and useless in a lot of cases because people are too busy thinking of an archetype to associate with your takes rather than the actual merit of any takes you give.

For example, if a liberal sees you criticizing Democrats, they just immediately interpret you as being some "MAGA idiot" archetype and use that to automatically feel justified in insulting and/or dismissing you, not actually engage with the contents of what you're saying.

Conversely, this reminds me of a time I said something critical of Trump in a YouTube comment section, and someone randomly came at me with "But Biden did this!"

MF, I didn't say jack or shit about Biden. Dafuq you talking about?

On similar note I saw this video that articulated why masculinity in dragonball is pretty broken tbh. Shit it makes sense. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=AyJbHVXwVpU

I'm guilty of this because the second I see a Liverpool fan or a kakarot fan I immediately dismiss them or try to run the fade vegeta-stare The only engagement I want at that point is boots to asses

Glad figueroa got the win but ffs this is a dirty fucking sport.

Something I am realizing about why I feel uncomfortable interacting with some Black people who have some other big part of their identity or interests in common with me is that a lot of them really do seem to be "Black second."

For example, now that I think about it, some other Black queer people I have talked to act like they are queer first and Black second.

Both are important, of course, but my mentality could never work like this again.

I can never feel like anything is more important than my Blackness. Back when I actually did think that way, my self-esteem was in the damn toilet.

Something I noticed is that the difference between many white queer people I interact with and many Black cishet people I interact with is that, even if the Black cishet people can be some bit queerphobic, they still treat me far more like a human being at the end of the day.

[–] 3rdWorldCommieCat@hexbear.net 10 points 4 days ago (3 children)

Exact same for me even thought I'm not black, race trumps all other aspect of my identity. That's just how it works in this world imo.

[–] CommunistCuddlefish@hexbear.net 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Same. Took me forever to figure out any queerness on my part because the oppression from race was so much louder and more difficult + destructive that it required far more of my attention

[–] 3rdWorldCommieCat@hexbear.net 3 points 2 days ago

I always find this to be common among most queer poc I speak with and yet it seems to offend white queers as if we're saying queerphobia isn't an issue lmao

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 10 points 3 days ago (1 children)

That's just how it works in this world imo.

We live in a worldwide caste system that will continue to exist so long as there are borders and hierarchies. There's no way around race because it's so globally all-consuming.

Since becoming physically disabled, I have not experienced nearly as much ableism as I have racism in the same time frame. There's still a lot of ableism around mental illness I have to deal with, but it seems like people are more open to discussing problems around suicide than they are talking about race. It's often "deer in headlights" from white liberals.

[–] 3rdWorldCommieCat@hexbear.net 6 points 3 days ago

I'm disabled myself and I agree 100% with you.

[–] Angel@hexbear.net 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

This is what led me to realize that white queer people and white women are absolutely not worth my fucking time.

[–] 3rdWorldCommieCat@hexbear.net 4 points 3 days ago

Even most the worst of our people (race wise) still see us as human when our supposed white queer and women allies don't but pretend like they do or aren't even aware of how much racist biases they hold.

[–] vegeta1@hexbear.net 15 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Yo this cabal of pedos is really gonna starve out cuba and the euros who were crying about rules based order are gonna justify this shit.

[–] thelastaxolotl@hexbear.net 8 points 3 days ago

Another normal day.

Bad Bunny is damn talented yet it seems like the super bowl thing and the grammy seem like a cynical push by media given how latin American's are being treated to profit off things and try to placate the masses with this representation on some " we see you and we hear you".

Dems be retweeting this guy like they didn't pass funding for ICE. Like mfs ain't out here starving Cuba out.

[–] AlHouthi4President@lemmy.ml 14 points 5 days ago (1 children)

End the "super bowl" and United States.

[–] vegeta1@hexbear.net 11 points 5 days ago

Insulting as hell. Epstein files elites admitted that they got nothing to worry about as long as the masses are placated. Its working just well. The pres threatened like half of those countries in south America too. Not even exaggerating.
