He's not in the Epstein files, right? I don't think I could take that big of a blow to my childhood nostalgia.

No but there’s talk out here that he is an asshole 😢

[–] BarbecueCowboy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 13 hours ago

Seems to be not uncommon in science personalities when talking with adults. Never heard even rumors about him being an asshole to someone in this target audience, lots of them seem like they just don't give a single shit about talking to adults and I kinda get it.

In a day and age where the next celebrity may have deliberately hurt children, I'll take an asshole any day.

I can accept that he’s an asshole now more than him being an asshole then. Fame and fortune gets to everyone’s head sooner or later.

I've heard he was an asshole before he was famous. He also is a Mechanical Engineer, which tracks with the asshole accusations. In my experience, people with little patience who don't suffer fools.

Exactly, he's not an asshole, he's an engineer, which is like a superset of asshole.

Oh cool the Petro industry sell out is getting an award. That's nice.

Haven't given a fuck about this guy since his Netflix show

Am I misremembering? I have strong memories about being very disappointed in his attitude toward oil companies in his Netflix show.

Very "don't meet your heros" moment.

His show actually gave me a fairly reasonable grounding in STEM. Enough that I went on to get a Biochem degree.

him and neil degrass just for basic interest. several notable people /celebetries has inspired people to become stem, law or MD, scully from x-files, SCOTTY(og not Nuscotty), judy has inspired people to become lawyers.

Scotty for sure was an inspiration for me.

I wasn't allowed to watch his show. My parents were young earth creationists. I grew up to be an engineer and an atheist once I learned real science.

Bill Nye the science guy! Thanks in part to his inspiration, today I work on a daily basis on the design of machines that make really angry photons. I'm a minority person and somehow was able to overcome all the shit. Bill's show was such a fundamental show to anything that would one day be my life's direction.

One interesting thing is that Bill's show was not on KPBS! It was, along with Bicman, over the air on my local racist channel 6. So even bad apples can hold the most delicious nectar if you just filter out the bad.

I regularly think about a quote form his show that stuck with me since I was a kid; Always remember, everyone you'll ever meet knows something you don't.
