While it’s completely true that people do get sick from outbreaks in pasteurized milk over time, there is no perfect system, the millions and millions of people who consume pasteurized dairy vs the thousands that dare to drink unpasteurized milk per capita objectively and obviously wildly points out that pasteurized is ridiculous orders of magnitude safer than raw milk.

But in typical willfully ignorant fashion, they ignore the science and dive into some nebulous and BS health benefits of raw milk while ignoring the game of death roulette they play.

It mainly has to do with an enzyme that exists in the milk (and helps digest the milk) but breaks down from heat, and then this is blamed for gut issues (and gut issues are pretty common these days and hard to pinpoint the cause of, so people will latch on to anything to try to solve the issue).

I'm not sure about the accuracy of that enzyme thing, that's just the information that had me wondering about raw milk.

It's completely perpendicular to whether or not there's any harmful bacteria in the milk (other than cooking gets rid of both), which means getting sick from raw milk isn't guaranteed, which then makes it go through the same pathways gambling does (and we're notoriously bad at risk assessment in gambling), so some people with gut issues (especially if it actually does help, though I bet many build the habit of getting raw milk without even confirming it does help and just keep the habit going because they feel like they are sticking it to the man) ignore that a recurring low chance of something has an increased chance of running into it over time.

Ultimately, laziness won out for me and I never bothered trying to find a source of raw milk when I was interested in the idea, though I can't say I ever really fully bought into it as I knew that even if pasturization was more necessary because of unhygienic milk industry practices, it was still being done for a reason.

But ultimately, both this and the anti-vaccine movement are about people losing trust in this corporate-dominated system, which I can't really call irrational on its own, even if it leads to some irrational conclusions. It wasn't that long ago that cigarette companies were sponsoring "smoking is great" propaganda, and later "smoking isn't that bad". And the opioid crisis didn't do anything to help credibility since doctors were pushing addictive drugs marketed as not addictive because they were getting kickbacks from the manufacturers.

It's going to get worse every day, and every day we're all going to get used to sharing a country with a population who have been essentially lobotomized by capital until we give up fighting, because outside influences are oozing through our every media feed and atomized algorithm pushing whatever radical slop it can to make us all divided and dumber with no attention spans and crippling social anxiety so nobody is able to enforce the ONLY thing that keeps populations caring about reason and facts: social pressure.

Social pressure is the only thing that's ever worked to make people want to be smarter and make right choices, and when you get rid of community, you get rid of people's need to belong to a better tribe, so everyone retreats to their online, AI-nurtured spaces to be coddled and sold new products.

Yea, most of these RAW milk people dont realize its basically just low temperature boiling. They think they are adding acid or antibiotics or soething.

I mean, raw milk would be perfectly safe to drink, if you were suckling it straight from an animal's udder, but that seems to be frowned upon in polite society so instead we put it in bottles where contaminants can live and grow in the milk.

The funny part is that some people in the raw milk community have started heating the milk before consumption to reduce the risk of illness. They swear its not pasteurization though, that's something different and bad.

This isn’t survival of the fittest. Not one baby in human history was responsible for their own fitness or survival. This is survival of the poorly educated, poorly resourced, poorly connected communities. They’re trying to make ends meet with a baby, and unfortunately they couldn’t do that in a safe manner. It’s a tragedy, a hallmark of human life.

Personally I think we'll continue to have problems if misinformation is never found culpable of the deaths that they cause. There's no way this person decided to drink unpasteurized milk alone. Who was her community and why aren't they being held accountable? I have the same concerns with the head of the HHS, and precious cases of stochastic terrorism. Our system of justice (or what it once was...) is just illprepared for this.

I can't fathom a reason why pasteurization shouldn't be required.
