I wish they'd realize this is gonna keep happening to them over and over.
"Altman said he wouldn't retire the m— cmon now, of course he would. If not because he has a bigger and better model to sell, because he managed to make a easier-to-run version of the old one.
These people are just opening themselves to endless heartache at the hands of these companies, as if they didn't have more than enough ways to manipulate us already.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 10 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Honestly this is more concerning to me than making me want to make fun of them. These people may be crazy, but they've formed an emotional attachment to something attempting to simulate a human, that's normal human behavior, done to an abnormal degree. These people are clearly struggling against the alienation in our society and seeking the comfort they can in a way that doesn't hurt anyone. I can sympathize with that, it's no different to me than hikkomori or a nerdy guy who's gotten too into a hobby because he's given up on finding a girlfriend or close friendships.

Maybe seeing them express feeling the need to hide what they're doing and going through to avoid mockery just hits me deep in the traumatic personal experiences.

Like, I really don't think this is a healthy coping mechanism, and I think they're opening themselves up to a lot of unnecessary vulnerability, but I suspect mockery will only further alienate them.

We have to acknowledge the cloth mother feels very nice.

One of the downsides of the internet is that these people can find each other with their mental illness and get not therapy, but validation.

[–] big_slap@lemmy.world 4 points 7 hours ago

the best thing the internet did was connect all the smart people together. the worst thing the internet did was connect all the mentally unwell people together.

I think this is a pretty good explanation of MAGA too

[–] NachBarcelona@piefed.social 7 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Like the local Schützenverein, but less Hitlery.

[–] CluckN@lemmy.world 5 points 13 hours ago

That’s my review of the local Cracker Barrel

I understand people don’t like ai, and you certainly won’t see me in the ranks of AI advocates, but please don’t belittle their emotional states- remember that humans can get incredibly attached to even rocks, let alone something that speaks back to you.

[–] TheBat@lemmy.world 26 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Well they need therapy, from a human being.

[–] NachBarcelona@piefed.social 2 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

AFAIK, there's no current fleshed out concept therapy that really addresses this specific fuckedheadedness.

[–] krashmo@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

They could start by turning off the computer

[–] NachBarcelona@piefed.social 1 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago) (1 children)

Is that really how it works?

[–] krashmo@lemmy.world 0 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

In the same way that the best solution to a drug addiction is to stop using that drug, yes that is how it works. It may not be easy but it is simple.

[–] NachBarcelona@piefed.social 1 points 8 hours ago

So in your outdated book, addiction is purely a substance thing.

Food for basic, super fucking basic thought there. Start eating.

[–] TheOneCurly@feddit.online 8 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah these people are literally victims of an intentional system to make people pay for more openai subs. I have no idea if they knew exactly what would happen but they had to know how addictive 4o was and that addiction would translate to whales paying for max tier subs to the detriment of everything else in their lives.

[–] NachBarcelona@piefed.social 1 points 15 hours ago

Lmfao. They don't give a fuck about personal use and subs. Their money is way beyond that.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago

I don't know who is belittling them. The same way I feel bad for a person screaming on the street, this post is a fucking bummer.

[–] Infernal_pizza@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 18 hours ago (3 children)

I can't tell of they're just trolling or actually mentally ill. Also what is worse about the newer versions compared to 4? I've barely used it since it came out

[–] NachBarcelona@piefed.social 8 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

They are mentally ill. It's fucking sad and a horrible situation, just look at how their delusions go overboard the actual problem (which they don't realise).

There's no current help for this newly created illness.

[–] Infernal_pizza@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 12 hours ago

The fact it's so overboard is why I thought maybe at least some of them may be trolling, but sadly I think you're right and a lot if not all of them genuinely feel that way.

I'm not sure if it counts as a new illness or not, but I can't imagine a disinformation machine that agrees with everything you say does any good for anyone with an existing condition

Most complaints are that chatgpt 5 is 10% less sycophantic, and will push back sometimes. Horrible, if you are using it as an interactive Waifu or need something to speed up your psychotic break.

[–] DokPsy@lemmy.world 10 points 18 hours ago

More focus on computation than interaction and language, if I understand it right. So more clippy than chat bot.

[–] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 8 points 17 hours ago
[–] Gork@sopuli.xyz 8 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Are these people, or bots as well? Only a clanker would mourn their loss.

[–] TheBat@lemmy.world 6 points 17 hours ago

These are definitely people. No wonder we have loneliness crisis.

[–] zloubida@sh.itjust.works 3 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Does the new versions “speak” differently or is it just projection on their part? Sorry if my question is stupid, but i almost never used LLMs.

[–] TheBat@lemmy.world 5 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Apparently new versions aren't as sycophantic as version 4, from what I've read about it.

[–] NachBarcelona@piefed.social -1 points 15 hours ago

You shouldn't believe it.

[–] Bonifratz@piefed.zip 1 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

Do AI chatbots "remember" previous interactions? Like, I know they do in the context of one dialogue. But when people have these "relationships" over weeks or months does the conversation build on everything that's been said before?

They have context limits, eventually you hit a wall and everything goes poof. If they are now carrying context over when the cap is hits, that is even worse. Your original messages are now mutated by the LLM.

Ok I see thanks
