In Sweden that is the case. We have something called "allemansrätten" directly translated to all-mans-right, or, the freedom to roam. So, as long as there are no fences, you can walk around wherever you like. You are even allowed to pass through big animal enclosures as long as you don't disturb the animals or so.
Showerthoughts
A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.
Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:
- Both “200” and “160” are 2 minutes in microwave math
- When you’re a kid, you don’t realize you’re also watching your mom and dad grow up.
- More dreams have been destroyed by alarm clocks than anything else
Rules
- All posts must be showerthoughts
- The entire showerthought must be in the title
- No politics
- If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
- A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
- Posts must be original/unique
- Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS
If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.
Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.
The Brits have a right to roam too. I miss it here in Germany, there are tons of areas where there is nowhere to go for a walk.
Oh, I just assumed Germany had that too. So sad ;a; Is it clear where it's ok to take a walk and not?
It's fun thinking there's a path when it's actually a logging road with huge ruts in it later on!
Now that makes tons sense to me! Why would some put up a sign saying No Trespassing, without a fence to instantly communicate property boundaries? It should never be enforceable without fencing. Yet, again, a Scandinavian country has it right over The USA.
Haha yep.
I think in some states in USA you are not allowed to shoot the tresspasser unless you have asuch sign? So it fills a purpous there too, just a much darker one
It varies by jurisdiction, but in many places trespass isn’t actionable if it was accidental or if the person was deceived into trespassing by a third party. Posted signs could prevent those cases.
This has always been my understanding of the purpose behind the signs. It removes or at least makes it harder to use the defense that you didn't know you were trespassing.
They're more a declaration of intent than anything else, also it makes it more obvious you're trespassing if someone, say, borders a forest, and their property has trees on it. It makes it really hard to tell where it's okay to walk, since the line is invisible, so someone saying "I was walking in this public forest, and there's no obvious marking here" is a viable defence in court.
But if there's a fence, which is where I usually see these signs, they're pointless at best, or a threat of violence at worst.
Hey you're right, in the same vein it could be argued it implies they're cool with everything else not explicitly mentioned. "NO TRESPASSING (murder's ok)"
I’ve always wondered about that too…. It certainly makes it seem that if there isn’t a posted sign specifically denying an action you’re OK to do it.
A longer more accurate sign would read:
"Do not enter. Violators will be charged with Trespassing."
But that's a lot more words than just saying "No Trespassing", and its less likely to be overlooked.
I've never thought about that. It's telling you specifically not to commit a crime that was already illegal anyway
Only break one law at once. If you're doing illegal shit in or with your vehicle, don't get pulled over for running red lights or having a broken taillight. Crime 101.
