Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

What do you mean I don't get special privileges just because I'm a white male? This is a hate crime.

[–] rockerface@lemmy.cafe 11 points 2 days ago

How is it a hate crime if I love doing it?

If you haven't watched Sealab 2021, do so.

Seconded. That show is a unique gem.

A little info - it was made in the early days of Cartoon Network's Adult Swim segment. The network had acquired the rights to use characters from Hanna-Barbera (in this example, the characters are from "Sealab 2020," a show from the 70s) and creatives were basically given a free-for-all pass to do whatever they wanted. And they ran with it. The humor is absurd and it's glorious.

Another fun fact - Sealab 2021 shares a universe with the show Archer. They were both created/produced by Adam Reed and Matt Thompson, with an episode of Archer ("Sea-Tunt") providing a crossover between the two.

The acquisition of Hanna-Barbera characters also gave Adult Swim the shows Space Ghost Coast-to-Coast (a parody of late night talk shows) and Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law (which sees various iconic Hanna-Barbera characters, like Yogi Bear or the Scooby-Doo gang, facing legal issues.) I haven't rewatched Space Ghost since its airing, but I have rewatched Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law, and I'd definitely recommend putting that on your download list as well.

I still say "wash in cool or cold water" occasionally.

Ironically, when cishet men are being hunted for sport, it's usually by other cishet men

[–] MotoAsh@piefed.social -2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That's not ironic. That's status quo exactly as expected.

Also not true in certain areas like in South Africa in the wrong neighborhoods. Though uhh, they kinda' have good reason not to trust whitey down there.

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Might wanna re-read what you're replying to. There's a reason they dropped the "white" part when they made their comment.

Hunting people for sport is part of white cultural heritage. Taking that away is the real genocide

[–] Maxxie@piefed.blahaj.zone 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

"You want to take away my supremacy over ANOTHER marginalised group, which means I'm going to be one step closer to the bottom of the hierarchy I have created in my own head!? Clearly this must be the 'fascism' I keep hearing about."

This is easily in the top ten opening themes of all time.

Surprisingly enough when I was gathering signatures for a ban of conversion therapy a lot of people in my circle signed it. I was only disappointed by my mother and 2 then acquaintances/kind of friends.

[–] MotoAsh@piefed.social 7 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (4 children)

Yea, this hate for white men alone is weird. I've heard nastier shit from women in my many years.

It's almost like anyone can be a hateful piece of shit, and drawing these hard lines does nothing but help keep people separate.

[–] ScrooLewse@lemmy.myserv.one 9 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

This is ABSOLUTELY correct but only half the equation. Assholes come from everywhere, but white male assholes from the colonial era engineered a system that pegs your ability to ACT on that horridness to your proximity to their racial and gender group. And the assholes in successive generations of said white men have made it their lives' work to maintain those lines and stay powerful.

Everyone has the capacity to be horrible, it's just that this specific group set up extensive infrastructure for it.

[–] MotoAsh@piefed.social 0 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Ehhhhhh you'd be surprised to learn that white supremacy hasn't been the only 'supremacy' to hit main stream throughout history...

[–] ScrooLewse@lemmy.myserv.one 2 points 1 day ago

No, I would not. You can go to India and see them profile people based on their surname and neighborhood of birth, right now. Brahmans bitch about reverse casteism the same way Republicans bitch about reverse racism. In China, Han supremacy has them doing a genocide, right now. You could turn back the clock and look at old timey racism, which is a fundamentally different beast from modern racism as it cared about cultural mores and birthplace, skin color being tertiary. As the Romans famously put it, "you're either a Roman or you're a barbarian."

All of this misses the point I had made. White supremacy is an international political and cultural system that enables and encourages assholes. That's not always how it's been, it's not the only system in the world, but right here right now, it sets them and anyone who abides the system that empowers them apart for scrutiny.

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 1 points 1 day ago

I don't live in the US so no, I wouldn't be surprised.

[–] Wirlocke@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I accidentally hit send on an incomplete thought, ignore this comment.

So your perception is that a minoritized group targets the majority group more than that group targets them?

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 0 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

I'd assume that women are more worried about being gang raped than about being hunted for sport. Big talking point for far righters, at least here in Europe (nevermind that actually, most rapes happen between people with personal connections).

[–] WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 1 points 1 day ago

Do what I do, and never leave your house unless you have to.

This is why I will be one of the last humans alive. I can sit and survive almost forever, in almost any conditions.

I don't want smoke, don't care about being better than anyone, don't care about dating, or any of that life stuff people want.

I see everything I get from humans as only a bonus, and I try to avoid buying anything from humans if it can be helped. Meaning, if I grow food, or have stored food, I prefer to eat that first. If my device works, I will keep it on life support until it is a brick. If I do have to buy something new, I buy the highest quality possible. I kill debt as soon as I can, prioritizing it over food, luxuries, even healthcare and hygiene rn.

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago (1 children)

And then they fill the comment sections about how they are the real victims because they knew a guy who was falsely accused and it mildly inconvenienced his life but i still suspect their homie was probably guilty

[–] FerretyFever0@fedia.io 7 points 2 days ago

False accusations definitely can ruin lives, but mostly not those of white guys. African-American men and boys however, they got lynched because some racist white girls made false rape accusations.
