US even does corruption like it’s doing the police academy movie style.

When you hear about an epic fuckup like this by the U.S. government, it's almost always an intentional mistake that benefits the people who actually got a bafoon elected to do as he's instructed and cover for their "happy accidents."

While the victims reported more than $100 million in losses, Brink’s said the stolen items were worth less than $10 million.

When life gives you ~~lemons~~ theft, commit insurance fraud! I say fuck the rich "victims"...

I think it was said the fraud is actually in the other direction. Jewelry is regularly undervalued to reduce the cost of insuring it.

Brandy Swanson, the director of the San Mateo jewelry show, previously said the jewelers robbed of their gems had lost more than $100 million in the theft. Vendors claimed the figure was as high as $150 million.

Swanson noted it was her experience that jewelry owners tend to underestimate their pricey inventory when it comes to insurance, to keep costs low.

“That’s where the discrepancy comes in,” she said.

I don't think that's fraud. If you insure an object for $100, then you get $100 if it pays out. That the object was actually worth a trillion dollars is neither here nor there

This might be unrelated - that said, I'm actually non-binary, and I prefer gender-neutral and feminine terms. Seriously!

[–] zbyte64@awful.systems 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

There are only two genders; binary and non-binary.

[–] DylanMc6@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Trans people and non-binary people ALWAYS exist. Seriously!

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

I think they were making a joke. Twobinary... 👍

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Oh alright, then I used the right term.

But more accurately, the "dude" wasn't necessarily for you, more like a lone that could've been taken from the movie.

👍

[–] lohky@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Why come you didn't watch sooner? Probably too busy baitin'.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

😆 you crowbarred that reference in there lol, nice!

[–] Headofthebored@lemmy.world 59 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Dude was probably on the plane back to Ecuador just repeating "There's no fucking way they're this damn stupid is there?" to himself the whole time.

[–] Catoblepas@piefed.blahaj.zone 37 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Everyone else getting deported probably wondering why tf this one guy is in such a good mood

To a non-extradite country too lol

[–] FreddiesLantern@leminal.space 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Oh Hollywood, do something with this please 🙏

[–] ameancow@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Fuck no, not Hollywood.

They would try to make some kind of morality lesson in it to appeal to liberal viewers and make the thief pay for his crime with some kind of emotional consequence like he has to give up the jewels to free his daughter from custody or something.

Hollywood has taught us over and over that we, the workers and people crushed under the boot of capital get NO reward.

Think about how many times you've seen this scene:

"We're too heavy, we won't make it to the island! We need to dump more weight!"

"But... but... all we have left to throw out is the treasure!"

It's the same as when they portray overworked, uneducated rednecks as "Real Americans" and "Patriots" for struggling for nothing. They want you to have nothing and be happy for it because it's "morally correct" and never dream of winning against a stacked system.

[–] FreddiesLantern@leminal.space 7 points 2 days ago

Nah that’s a fair point.

Ok, rephrase, talented people known as amateurs do something with this. 🙏

[–] Lasherz12@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

"Get his ass back here, we've gotta extort him for a pardon first."

[–] nodiratime@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

If he pays up, he even gets a seat on the board of... pieces.

[–] danc4498@lemmy.world 37 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Is there details to this? This is hilarious.

[–] uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 3 days ago

I robbed a bank full of dinero
A great big mountain of dough
So it was goodbye companero
And cheerio
I couldn't stay and face the music
So many reasons why
I won't be sending postcards
From Paraguay, from Paraguay, from Paraguay

--Mark Knopfler

[–] ThePantser@sh.itjust.works 15 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Well they said they would deport criminals, broken clock. Think of the savings they just made by not having a lengthy trial.

[–] Janx@piefed.social 12 points 3 days ago

Reporting the stolen jewelry and gemstones at 10x the value lost is fraud. Are the "victims" going to be deported too?

[–] Zephorah@discuss.online 14 points 3 days ago

The regime of chaos.

[–] affenlehrer@feddit.org 12 points 3 days ago (1 children)

He could've just paid Trump for a pardon

[–] iamthetot@piefed.ca 19 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Why? This was much cheaper.

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

In fact, I think they offer to pay people that self deport...

DHS leadership trying to step on Trump's pardon racket with their own? Something tells me there's so much corruption here that there's now corruption middlemen.

[–] bagsy@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

They really should set up a website to keep track of all the bribes, pardons, and other corruption so these kinds of things don't keep making them look so foolish.

[–] OldChicoAle@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

Jewel heist? Is this a GTA mission?

[–] naught101@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Assuming this is satire? With an account name like that...

[–] Remember_the_tooth@lemmy.world 31 points 3 days ago (1 children)
[–] naught101@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Ah, thanks for the source!

The US is in serious need of some reconfiguration

[–] ickplant@lemmy.world 22 points 3 days ago

Nope, it’s true, they deported him to his childhood country of Ecuador that has no extradition treaty with the U.S.

[–] MoffKalast@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

"With a little help from some old friends."

Go on take the money and run.

ICE/ASS will help.

[–] then_three_more@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

Satire is dead
