I'm interested in buying an EV.

I generally like Honda, but knowing it's based on GM - a brand I've had multiple issues with - makes me really nervous. Even if the issues are covered under warranty, I don't want the hassle.

I'm also looking at Ford and Hyundai. I normally wouldn't really consider either brand, but most of their issues tend to be engines and transmissions, neither of which apply to EVs.

Unfortunately EVs seem to be on the way out now, rather than getting improvements...

Fun fact: most EVs are using Wwise, a sound engine developed for video games and being used by almost a third of the games industry. Someone someday just thought “hey we can design awesome fake car sounds for racing games with this baby, why don’t we just plug it into cars instead?” then it took off.

On a second note, EV sounds totally hackable over software but no one is paying much attention yet. OTA updates also possible.

Can’t we just put playing cards in our spokes like the good ol days?

We should protect everybody from the need to turn one's head and/or look up from the phone. Since everything else out there

  • trains not at a crossing
  • a truck rolling town a hill
  • a falling anvil
  • an angry bear
  • a hungry bear
  • a grumpy bear
  • a poked bear
  • a curious shark
  • an everyday Humboldt hellspawned squid

..all make noise to remind human-shaped prey to look up from the phone and avoid danger, the Chevy needs to fall in line.

In a world where we need to remind people "do not use hot iron like a telephone", we need our blissfully silent things to make noise.

Yeah, those blind and visually impaired people should look up, look around and visually paying attention to their surroundings.

Bunch of assholes who aren't watching out for silent cars!

Word is they're going to put a straight piped motorcycle engine on there so EVERYONE knows the car is driving around

Finally, pavement pounders for my EV!

Can they recall the electric Humvee? With its ridiculous weight and very fast acceleration, that thing is a menace to anyone or anything unfortunate enough to be in collision with one.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 2 points 17 hours ago

With its ridiculous weight

9,700 lbs, you do not want to be two cars in front of the car that gets rear-ended by this tank.

[–] confusedpuppy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 49 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I was building an automation line that was going to be used to manufacture the battery tray for Hummers. When I found out in 2020 that my workplace was considered essential service during the covid lockdowns, I pretty much lost my mind. Stupidest fucking thing I ever heard.

There's nothing essential about an electric Hummer.

I don't work there anymore.

[–] halcyoncmdr@piefed.social 12 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

There's not even anything essential about auto manufacturing in general. Even if it was an American Kei car line making inexpensive vehicles more generally useful daily than nearly anything currently available in the US.

[–] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

It was essential that stock line go up

[–] AlecSadler@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Must explain why the two GM EVs I have were absurdly loud to the point where there are guides online to suppress them. Magnitudes louder than a diesel 350 and would be the same volume even when stopped at a light. It was all you could hear.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I would take that mess back to the dealer, no?

[–] AlecSadler@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

It took about 10 minutes to disable, all good.

In a previous vehicle I had all you had to do was pull a fuse out.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 1 points 22 hours ago

Oh I see, I thought there was something wrong with it.

[–] FishFace@piefed.social 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

They're working as designed. The USA has a very high minimum noise level for EVs in its safety standards. The idea is that pedestrians can hear them coming like ICE vehicles, but they end up being louder than ICE vehicles at low speeds.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Geez. All you hear from EVs where I live is the sound of the tires against the ground. Of course very old EVs will sound like a small choir of baby angels, but more recent ones are just silent to me.

I just had a look at the new Volvo EX60 which seems exceptionally quiet. Looking forward to switching out my EX40 for that one when my lease is up.

[–] FishFace@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago

I believe my car makes some artificial sound at low speeds, but it's proportional to the speed. It does have reversing bongs which is a bit annoying.

God I know what utter pieces of shit normal Chevys are. I can't imagine how bad electric Chevys must be.

[–] skuzz@discuss.tchncs.de 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

And GM was never one to understand electricity. They make the worst wiring harnesses, do stupid shit like mounting computer modules next to the HVAC core where large heat/cold changes happen leading to corrosion. They don't use the right metals in even bulbs/sockets, so it looks like you have a burned out tail light and, lo and behold, it's just galvanic corrosion.

It is amazing they managed to get an EV to leave the lab, let alone assembly line.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 1 points 17 hours ago

It's because they design cars with accountants.

[–] QueenMidna@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

My Chevy volt has been holding up pretty well. The whole line is dead though because I can't have nice things

[–] bilb@lemmy.ml 0 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Didn't they just reveal a 2027 model?

[–] QueenMidna@lemmy.ca 1 points 7 hours ago

The Bolt continued, which is all-electric.

The volt were plug-in hybrids

[–] GladiusB@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Gross. I have two bow ties. A Camaro that will eat you alive. And my daily is a Bolt EUV. Solid car. They aren't crap. You just have bad judgement.

[–] athatet@lemmy.zip 3 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Go on then, eat me big boy.

[–] GladiusB@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago

Sure. But it only comes out of the garage for 10Gs or a good pink slip to race against.
