On Tuesday, she plans to introduce a bill in the House of Representatives urging the US to end the political and economic dominance of billionaire oligarchs, halt the corporate subsidies and tax advantages that fortify their power and reinvest in the American people to defend democracy from authoritarianism.

The legislation is supported by Our Revolution, a political organisation that spun out of the senator Bernie Sanders’s 2016 presidential run, which is launching a “Defund the Oligarchy” campaign with research showing that individuals and corporations who funded Trump’s election received a staggering return on their investment.

Even if I asked my MAGA dad if we should to tax the rich he'd say "fuck yeah we do."

[–] ripcord@lemmy.world 10 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I'm surprised. My semi-maga father-in-law would come up with a bunch of excuses he parrots from fox news.

Like he has a half dozen times.

You can't be specific. If you say "tax the rich" they will say yes. But as soon as you start listing off billionaires they will back down. They want to tax the rich, they just still think there are good billionaires.

[–] adespoton@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 months ago

I don’t think they do. But they DO think there are billionaires who will support their personal views and provide dividends to the worthy few right thinkers.

I don't want to just tax billionaires I want to tax them into extinction.

2 things shouldn't exist in our society. Hunger and billionaires.

Americans want all kinds of extreme and crazy things, like healthcare and education and housing and food and not being shot in the face. Unfortunately the best the government can do is shoot them in the face.

That's radical left antifa that should be exterminated as cockroaches. True Americans love billionaires, fetishize money and equate having a billion with divinity. Other "Americans" are expendable.

Read in Trump's voice

Read in Trump’s voice

Too many syllables, too coherent.

Tax them?

Prohibit them

I want a world wide hard cap on personal wealth. Nobody should have more than 10 million in personal net worth. Helo, even a million might be on the high side, but cap it somewhere there.

Anything over that, 100% to taxes

You don't have to change away from capitalism, it's fine, it works well to generate loads of wealth and as long as there are hard caps, nobody will get crazy rich, governments will get loads in income for free healthcare, free education, hell, even universal basic income

Point is: nobody should be either crazy wealthy or crazy powerful.

Having said that, add powerto that list too. Nobody should be able to be president, too much power. Nobody should be able to singlehandedly declare or start a war just because he's a pedophile and needs a distraction. Nobody should be able to just overrule judges and liberate their cronies for money

And after all that don't think the US is off the hook. It needs a complete overhaul, politically, justice systems, and so on, and I'd say, split up into the 50 states it has, but now each state being an independent country. (Same for Russia and China, btw)

I don't want to they're rich because they're smarter and better than us.

[–] toomanypancakes@piefed.world 3 points 2 months ago

And marvellously virile, too
