Donald Trump now genuinely lives in a different reality, one in which neither grammar nor history nor the normal rules of human interaction now affect him. Also, he really is maniacally, unhealthily obsessive about the Nobel Prize. The Norwegian Nobel Committee, not the Norwegian government and certainly not the Danish government, determines the winner of that prize. Yet Trump now not only blames Norway for failing to give it to him, but is using it as a justification for an invasion of Greenland.

Think about where this is leading. One possibility, anticipated this morning by financial markets, is a damaging trade war. Another is an American military occupation of Greenland. Try to imagine it: The U.S. Marines arrive in Nuuk, the island’s capital. Perhaps they kill some Danes; perhaps some American soldiers die too. And then what? If the invaders were Russians, they would arrest all of the politicians, put gangsters in charge, shoot people on the street for speaking Danish, change school curricula, and carry out a fake referendum to rubber-stamp the conquest. Is that the American plan too? If not, then what is it? This would not be the occupation of Iraq, which was difficult enough. U.S. troops would need to force Greenlanders, citizens of a treaty ally, to become American against their will.

The road is currently littered with things that should have been the last straw

Yeah, throw it on the pile.

the last straw should have been "grab them by the pussy"

but here we are, getting murdered in the street by nazi fascist pigfuck thugs

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 14 points 4 days ago (1 children)

The last straw should have been mocking a disabled reporter. That was a decade ago.

Which is probably nowhere close to the end. We’re probably going to have to go through a civil war, experience a nuclear catastrophe, something to cow the cultists back.

[–] LordMayor@piefed.social 62 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Anybody who reads that and doesn’t immediately conclude he’s absolutely fucked in the head and a threat to… everyone needs to get on the next SpaceX test rocket.

[–] Nebraska_Huskers@lemmy.world 17 points 4 days ago

The problem is even if haalf of trump voters finally agreed. And united left and right all decided to message our reps to stop this it either goes discarded or Vance is next in line and he still pursues it

There are no more straws. Anyone who supports Trump at this point has already locked in and there isn't anything him or his admin can do to change their minds.

[–] Triumph@fedia.io 20 points 4 days ago

It's not about who supports him. It's about the people and organizations that have the power to do something about it sitting on their hands.

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 14 points 4 days ago

The last ten years have been filled with last straws. Pick one for godsakes! This dude is a child rapist

[–] BlameTheAntifa@lemmy.world 20 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Not the rape, murder, torture, kidnapping, corruption, illegitimacy, illegality, unconstitutionality, warmongering, domestic and international terrorism, pedophilia, economic harm, environmental harm, the destruction of public landmarks, undermining congressional power, illegal firings and appointments, nepotism, theft, convictions, insurrection, sedition, or treason but his grade school bullying of our allies? THAT should be the last straw?

There have been so many last straws. America is a threat to the world. That he remains in power is evidence.

Dementia speaks folks.. it’s the late night sundowning and the posting in the wee hours when he should and would be sleeping if his brain wasn’t turning to plaque that’s the give away. Man is falling into the same disease that his father went down with and has played the ‘batshit’ game for so long it’s hiding what would be obvious in a normal, decent person.

[–] foodandart@lemmy.zip 4 points 4 days ago

It's his personal terror, according to his niece, Mary Trump. I hope it takes him screaming, into the void in absolute rage and fear.

(I actually got a strike on Reddit for posting this.. can you believe it?)

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 17 points 4 days ago (7 children)

Amidst all the doomers in here... I know a crazy MAGA person in my family. They have been staunch about supporting him and defending him since the beginning.

They are livid about this Greenland situation.

[–] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 6 points 4 days ago

last straw

Really? The last straw happened in the beginning of his previous administration

Entire bales of hay followed, I'm buried under straws and I can barely breathe.

I think "last straw" is very relative.at best.

The Final Straw Inc. is constantly looking for new and exciting ways to expand our lineup of Straws.

For decades now, our competitors have said you'll run out of straws, but our team has innovated constantly in the development of cutting edge Last Straws^tm^.

When you're fed up with the rest, it's time to try the best, you can always have One More!

Okay, so I can't really get angry over a demented old man yelling at the clouds, it's what they do...

But exactly what is happening in USA since there's nobody telling him to shut the fuck up? Somebody wrote this on a piece of paper for him and put it in an envelope and send it through as diplomatic post between two nations. And NOBODY at any point whatsoever had the courage to tell him what is obvious to everyone else on the planet: That these are the dumbest words every written on a piece of paper in the entire history of mankind. Really?

What are they so afraid of?

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 17 points 4 days ago

NOBODY at any point whatsoever had the courage to tell him what is obvious to everyone else on the planet

You described it well. It's what happens to tyrants, and invariably brings their downfall. It's a process: you replace more and more critical voices with yesmen and -women. It strengthens your power, but only until nobody dares to criticize you anymore. Because suddenly there's no way to correct course back to normal, and it all turns into a farce.

We have other living examples for that, historical examples, even fairytales - and measures against it. Separation of powers, no more than two consecutive terms, and ultimately the democratic process itself - if it hasn't been hollowed out for decades.

[–] MutantTailThing@lemmy.world 12 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

Part of me wants to believe its because they enjoy letting him make a dook of himself but I know better.

Edit: somehow, ‘fool’ got autocorrected to ‘dook’.

I have decided I like dook better.

They are afraid their corporate donors will get mad. Who benefits from this chaos? Corporations. Corporations who are handed the new contracts for resource extraction.

Just about our entire government is captured by these corporate interests. Foreign policy to enrich these powers has always been uniparty in this country try as we might to lie and obfuscate that. No one wants to speak out against Trump and lose out on the gravy train they have coming in with their kickbacks from donors.

Trump mocking that disabled reporter because of who they are should've been the last straw.

The US is awesomely amazing at invading other countries. This is a simple fact sustained by history

Having said that

It's also a simple fact, sustained by history, that America suckw beyond badly at occupying conquered territories. Iraq, anyone? Afghanistan anyone?

And those had relatively easy climates. Greenland is a fucking horror show with which the US has little experience

Any occupation of Greenland by the US WILL fail eventually, the question is just how many US soldiers will have to die before it's decided that maybe just maybe this wasn't a good idea.

The only way it would could possibly work is a complete genocide, kill or forcibly remove ALL citizens. This of course would be a humanitarian catastrophe with very few examples in history, but I wouldn't put it past the cheeto.

This all goes to ignore people living in the US. If you invade Venezuela, Mexico, Canada, Greenland.... Do you really think that none of its citizens that currently live in the US might get ideas? Then what? You're going to round those all up too?

Once the US invaded one of its allies, the current administration will be over, it's just a matter of time before it will bleed to death

To paraphrase a cool movie: There is no winning move, except not to play

And now there's no message of the Epstein files in the comments. The files the president can release with the flick of his finger. Great job America.

[–] pleaseletmein@lemmy.zip 4 points 3 days ago

“Give me the Peace Prize or else I’ll invade other countries and start wars” sounds like something out of a sitcom.

[–] OhStopYellingAtMe@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago

I'd be surprised if nobody was attempting to fubd a rebellion right now. But so far all I see is:

"Do something!"
"We're up against at least 3 militaries"
"Trump is gonna invade my country!"
"Okay, I need organization and funding"
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING KILL HIM NOW"

Like some sort of 3rd graders idea of how rebellions work. Everyone is down, its the how thats got all these small cells screwed

[–] lolola@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 4 days ago (2 children)

We have no meaningful leadership. The only mass actions I hear about are standing on streets holding signs, and "economic blackouts" that are short, distant, and ineffectual.

ffs the dems shut down the govt and i was like "oh cool cuz fascism right?" and they were "nah jk actually cuz healthcare!" and then rapidly caved with no concessions.

We need a Mamdani to say "if you can afford to skip work, please do so, and don't go back until the madness stops".

[–] Soup@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago

The final straw. After that maybe the ultimate straw! Heaven help us if we ever get to the terminal straw, that one’s a doozey!

He's currently Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs.

And in case anyone reading takes her professional credentials to be "wife" instead of just taking it as a fun fact, she's a renowned journalist, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, and one of the world's most important experts on modern authoritarianism. wiki

[–] spicehoarder@lemmy.zip 6 points 4 days ago

An excerpt from Hitler's Stalingrad Speech for reference:

Before we attacked Warsaw, I called for surrender five times, I was always refused. I asked that at least the women and children be sent out. Not even the officer bearing the flag of truce was received. Everything was refused, and only then did I decide to do what is permitted by every law of war.

[–] aesthelete@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

In any sane country, sure, but we're well beyond that at this point.
