Poor Things is so absolutely bizarre and Emma Stone was phenomenal in the role. Willem DeFoe was also at his weirdest here. It’s hard to recommend, just with the sheer amount of grotesque scenes, but anyone that I think will take to it, I recommend it.

I recommend that people first watch Swiss Army Man to dip their toe into the comedy they're about to absorb when they put on Poor Things.

My bad synopsis of Poor ThingsEdward Scissorshands with STIs and brain ghosts. And lots of "furious jumping."

Oh yeah, I absolutely agree! Poor things is probably my favorite movie of all time. I agree, that it's hard to reccomend, but it's also probably one of the more normie-compatible movies of yorgos lanthimos, if you compare it to something like "the lobster" or "the killing of a sacret deer. By the way, thre is also a book with the same title, which this movie is based on. It's written from the perspective of McCandles and you learn a lot more about the Godwin Baxter character there (who was much more of a background character in the movie). It's also just phenomanally written, so I am really enjoying it so far.

Before I saw the community, I sincerely thought that this was a shitpost designed to fill us with rage at how the titles face whichever way they want.

Funnily enough, they all have the correct orientation (look at the little logos at the bottom). I guess, there is just no proper standard in which orientation a movie title is printed on the box.

Now that's mildly infuriating.

Burn those disc to a drive. I have 7 seasons of Smallville that won't play due to disc rot. Had them forever. I am also collecting and creating a Jellyfin server. So far 165 movies and many tv shows.

Yeah it's not like drives never fail

You should check out !homevideo@feddit.uk, I think you'd love it!

I don't collect anything specific but blurays are dirt cheap so why not buy them :)

[–] Yaky@slrpnk.net 4 points 3 months ago

Started doing the same a few months ago too, mainly prompted by streaming services removing and shuffling movies around constantly (particularly noticeable for series and classic Christmas movies).

You should start collecting VHS, that is the way the movies are meant to be watched! You can get some inspiration from the Victorville Film Archive (VFA).

What's the advantage of vhs?

Apparently you're not a filmbuff. https://youtu.be/IigCX4izmG0

I love my vhs tapes but its a little late to get in that game now. 10 years ago maybe. Its just not worth it now

Pfft, all the real OGs know it's LaserDisc or nothin'.

Dream Scenario is fun and weird, I blind bought it so thankfully I enjoyed it.

Also liked Poor Things, haven’t seen the other Yorgos films besides The Lobster and recently Dogtooth. Curious about them though!

And I too enjoy collecting movies on disc. Though I’ve been at it for a while.

my mom is obssesed with DVDs and blu rays, but she isnt willing to use a laptop to watch all those Blu rays, just the machines that are not being produced anymore.

I used to collect them when DVDs first started coming out. After a while I didn't really have space anymore and I realized that I actually started to get tired of movies. I was buying DVDs and never watching them.
