Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

France sends 15 soldiers, Germany 13.

"Ehhh just send a few guys we don't like."

They are betting that Trump will read the headline and assume it's a larger number.

[–] FortifiedAttack@hexbear.net 27 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The Netherlands sends one (1) soldier. Finland sends 2.

I'm sure the US is quaking in its boots at this unprecedented display of power.

The UK sent 1 😭😭😭

[–] BabyTurtles@hexbear.net 19 points 1 day ago

More like Hegseth the cross-eyed drunk SSecretary of War will read it as 1515 and 1313 troops respectively

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 10 points 1 day ago

"Hey, you want to go on holiday to Greenland?"

"Yeah, sure, alright."

"Cool, make sure you're nice to the yanks when they 'invade'."

[–] fox@hexbear.net 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They're planning officers meant to evaluate what's needed for a larger force

inb4 200 in some tents

[–] Cowbee@hexbear.net 49 points 1 day ago (1 children)

A couple dozen, for context. Real coalition of the willing here.

A small sacrifice to lure the yankees into a trap. Soon the yuros will feast on hamburgers and freedom fries in Washington.

[–] supafuzz@hexbear.net 25 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I don't really care who does it as long as somebody burns down the white house soon

[–] shane@feddit.nl 4 points 1 day ago

Tradition dictates that Canada be the one to burn the White House down.

[–] 9to5@hexbear.net 20 points 1 day ago

oh yeah critcal support to the 69th Romanian infantry division in the purge of the White House

If America smokes all of them and takes Greenland, Europe will just pretend it didn't happen a la USS Liberty

[–] aanes_appreciator@hexbear.net 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

it'll be some "deal" where Danes get to keeo the flag and other shit unchanged whilst the Americans will run it de facto

[–] footfaults@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

That's what they have now, through a treaty of some sort? America can already put more bases there

[–] trabpukcip@hexbear.net 37 points 1 day ago (2 children)

And the MS Estonia

And Nordstream 2

[–] Cysioland@lemmygrad.ml 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Nordstream 2 is celebrated and the bomber is hailed as a hero

[–] Sammmy@hexbear.net 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

In NATOSTAN maybe. Where people celebrate being made poorer by sanctions designed to shift market shares from Russia to the US and vassals. It's a great long term ploy, splitting Russia and Europe, keeps Germany in line, Europe on its knees for US power.

[–] Cysioland@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah, this fits, because liberal media in Poland manufactured consent for this and Poland refused to send the bomber to Germany for his trial

And nobody in govt even believed it was the real bomber, it's just building the second line of obfuscation instead of real investigation. Sikorski spilled it in his famous tweet and i hope it won't be forgotten especially in context of current government.

Was there something sus w the Estonias sinking?

[–] trabpukcip@hexbear.net 19 points 1 day ago

Nato was doing drills in the area, the "front fell off" the Estonia which was suspected to be from collision with a submarine (I think that's what the conspiracists decided) or an explosive charge (I think there was unusual wear on the joints that hinted at explosives), the mayday calls were delayed and non standard, and the entire wreck was entombed in steel & concrete to prevent any further investigation. There's more but I don't remember and the truth is out there

Occam's razor: when in doubt, blame NATO

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 11 points 1 day ago

It will be funny seeing Eurolibs bend over backwards to insist that the US didn't just take Greenland from Denmark and will probably waffle on about some legal technicality in NATO's articles and bylaws that actually mean it is ok.

according to wikipedia the local US base has 150 soldiers. the europeans will have to mobilize the police if they want to stand a chance.

[–] supafuzz@hexbear.net 22 points 1 day ago

"I can't fucking believe I have to do this" - every one of these guys

[–] Soulphite@reddthat.com 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This is like a game of Risk, except way riskier because instead of your unhinged opponent flipping the table because they're not getting their way, Pedonald the Rapist will just nuke the whole map, literally.

[–] Acute_Engles@hexbear.net 14 points 1 day ago

Rolling all ones on my attack, wheeling in an oxy/acetylene torch and burning the place to the ground

[–] CyborgMarx@hexbear.net 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They couldn't even bother to fill up a Boeing or two

The US will win Greenland

[–] Enjoyer_of_Games@hexbear.net 5 points 1 day ago

a boeing? that'd just be openly declaring it a suicide mission

[–] SacredExcrement@hexbear.net 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Odds that Trump issues new sanctions against Euro countries over this?

[–] FortifiedAttack@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago

Tariffs again, probably. Trump's favorite tool.

[–] Euergetes@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago

obviously not a contingent that'd meaningfully defend greenland but this definitely complicates what i'm sure Trump hoped would be sending a helicopter of specforce chuds to the parliament building.

now they'll have to secure a diplomatic coup and get these troops to leave in shame or it's a much more complicated and volatile operation that might demand european escalation (e.g. the troops are all killed)
