There are gay dudes, gay women, bi people, there's married gay couples. Players can marry same gender. Everything. None of it is ever portrayed negatively or for comedic effect. It's just there sometimes. You don't have to go out of your way to find it either, you directly encounter a chunk of it on the main quest line.

This game has absolutely zero concern with lgbt content. Anyone that has played this game will not believe myths about official censorship of lgbt content having directly seen for themselves that it's not.

I just watched a pretty good video on the topic that I'm pretty sure was posted here a month ago. It's a complex issue but Chinese censors seem to dislike pda in general, with gay characters held to a tighter standard due to institutional homophobia, but the overall vibe is "don't rock the boat" which goes both ways for better and for worse.

In my experience, Chinese people don’t like pda either. I love making my wife blush by kissing her in public. Usually get a playful slap afterwards though.

Well that doesn't hold true for this either because there are romantic NPCs having a loving moment, in public. And also players get several kinds of really affectionate and suggestive emotes that can be used with one another. No kisses though, just suggestive touching or couple stuff like piggyback or bridal carry I suppose. I don't think it's public displays of affection that seem to be missing but rather public displays of intimacy. No hug emote either.

Oh guildhalls have massage beds with animated massages too which was wild when I found it with a friend.

Don't get me started on the bdsm sex dungeon that exists under a hidden interactable trap door in the corner of the main city map.

Well the vid is clear that despite the trend the enforcement is pretty spotty, and for the high profile censorship that does happen it's always unclear whether it was done by state censors or preemptively by corporations in order to "play it safe" and protect their distribution rights.

Yah, I watched a chinese show a while ago, and the romance was essentially nonexistent, I think there was one kiss for a marriage or marriage proposal and if I remember correctly the married couple slept in separate beds which left me wondering maybe most of the "anti gay" censorship isn't really significantly different from straight and generally pda being discouraged (whether officially or just general the people just generally don't want it so in your face or maybe there is some sort of "protect the children" mentality idk)

the problem with this is that rocking the boat is the only way to get civil liberties like queer rights

I found a YouTube link in your comment. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:

It's a self fulfilling prophecy. Western games and media self censor LGBT because they hear China recently shut down some America LGBT NGO in China or the government discouraging effeminate men as role models, which causes a discrepancy between CN and Western versions, which fuels the narrative.

Road to Empress was another Chinese video game with several LGBT characters and a couple different LGBT endings. However, they're not considered the good ending because you do not end up becoming the Empress of China (spoilers).

It's a complex issue but they're making great strides. And importantly they're making strides forward whilst the US is leaping backwards.

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 5 points 12 hours ago

Yes what is important to me is the trend. China trends forwards while the whole west trends backwards. It is inevitable that the two will cross.

parenti quote this is just cover for blah blah evil see see pee it doesn't say any of that in the chinese version

They will have a very hard time explaining away the crossdressing dudes that talk about their crossdressing confidently and in a "it's fine" way.

[–] Bartsbigbugbag@lemmy.ml 2 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

There’s also the forced fem dude, who got castrated and blue dresses as a woman and has a male partner.

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 1 points 1 hour ago

I totally missed that one. Is he like a court eunuch then? I know they had a lot of those back in old China and as a group they held an enormous amount of power at certain points in Chinese history.
